Hyundai Ioniq: Up To 60 Mpg

Real world MPG test | Top 10 Most and least fuel efficient cars | What Car?

While the radically styled 2022 model year Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover is the talked-about member of Hyundais electrified family, the original Ioniq hybrid is still available and worth seeking out as an inexpensive way to get good fuel economy. The Ioniqs 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor produce 139 total system horsepower, along with a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, and respectable practicality with four doors and a hatchback layout.

Making the Ioniq even more attractive is the fact that it carries a mainstream style that does not advertise its extreme fuel efficiency, which may be appealing to people just looking for a frugal ride to and from work each day. Starting from $24,405, its also cheaper than its closest rival, the Toyota Prius. And while its starting to show its age in terms of in-car technology and interior quality, the Ioniq Hybrid still makes for a frugal runabout. A plug-in hybrid is also available and eligible for local and federal EV incentives.

Cars With The Best Gas Mileage For 2021

If you want something that’s good on gas and isn’t an SUV or crossover, this list should point you in the right direction.

Most every automaker has made great strides in improving fuel economy over the years. But even though fleetwide figures are on the rise, there are some stars in the sky that shine brighter than others.

Whether you’re in the market for something small or a much larger model, this list runs down the most fuel-efficient vehicles you can find across a wide variety of vehicle classes. Bear in mind, this list does not include crossovers or SUVs, but don’t worry, we have a list coming for them, too. For now, though, let’s take a look at the most fuel-efficient sedans, hatchbacks and coupes on sale today.

Fuel economy: 35 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, 37 mpg combined

Unsurprisingly, the most efficient subcompact car is also the most efficient nonhybrid in the group! The Mitsubishi Mirage might not win any awards for design or ride quality, but if you want a new car with a fresh warranty and a whole lot of fuel efficiency, the Mirage is where it’s at.

All Mirage variants get their motive force from a diminutive 1.2-liter I3 gas engine producing 76 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque, which is routed to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission. A five-speed manual is standard on the base trim, but it’s not nearly as efficient.

Fuel economy: 33 mpg city, 43 mpg highway, 37 mpg combined

Fuel economy: 119 mpge, 52 mpg on gas alone

Power is sent to the front wheels by a continuously variable automatic transmission . The drivetrain is efficient and provides adequate power for highway passing. The ES also boasts a roomy, comfortable interior and plenty of cargo space. Its the perfect formula for a great family car.

Mitsubishi Mirage: Up To 43 Mpg

At just over $15,000, the Mirage is the least expensive car on this list, and one of the cheapest new cars available. That, combined with up to 43 mpg, should make it appealing for those who value frugality more than anything. But the Mirage is far from the best car on this list, and for a little more money, there are better choices.

It has some virtues, however. The hatchback model has a respectable cargo hold with split-folding rear seats, and standard features include automatic emergency braking and Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. A five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty thats fully transferable is nothing to sneeze at, either. Those looking at subcompact hatchbacks, however, could be better served by a Hyundai Accent or Kia Rio and sacrificing some gas mileage. Or used cars like a higher-mileage Prius is higher in the rankings.

But the only available engine is a 77-horsepower, three-cylinder unit and without a turbo or much in the way of sophistication, it feels like its from another century. The cheap-feeling interior plastics dont help that. For some who just need a city car for little money, though, it could be worth considering.

Top 5 Cars With the Best Gas Mileage

32 City / 41 Highway / 35 Combined$21,390

The base 2020 Toyota Corolla SE Hatchback with the continuously variable transmission is the most efficient member of the popular Corolla clan, returning 35 combined mpg. This setup packs an adequate 168 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque into a package that starts at a very reasonable $21,390, a price that includes the $675 premium for the CVT. If you prefer a Corolla Sedan, the 2.0-liter variant with a CVT is good for 34 mpg combined. This engine is only available on the SE trim and above for the Sedan, though, which starts at $22,050.

33 City / 41 Highway / 36 Combined$15,850

Heres a nice easy one: Every version of the 2020 Kia Rio returns 36 mpg combined. Of course, there are only two variants, each featuring a naturally aspirated 120-hp 1.6-liter engine and a continuously variable transmission, but thats beside the point. Prices for the base Rio LX start at $15,850, although wed suggest grabbing the $16,490 Rio S, which is just as efficient but carries a better load of equipment.

How We Ranked These Fuel

This list focuses on the trim level with the best fuel economy ratings. These cars are ranked according to annual fuel cost estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency . The EPA calculates the cost based on drivers logging 15,000 miles annually. It also uses a different assumed price for regular gasoline, premium gasoline and diesel fuels. This fuel economy comparison allows an apple-to-apple analysis.

After annual fuel cost, we sort the list by the EPAs combined fuel economy ratings, then city and highway fuel economy. In cases where theres a tie, the model that has the lower starting price is given preference .

Weve also indicated the most efficient powertrain, noting if the SUV has front-wheel drive and the recommended fuels.

What Is The Most Affordable And Fuel Efficient Car

The Hyundai Ioniq is a slightly more affordable hybrid alternative to the Toyota Prius. It is available in hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. There was also a full-electric version, which has been discontinued for 2022. The most efficient version is the Ioniq Blue, which returns 58 mpg city and 60 mpg highway.

How We Made Our List

Best and worst vehicles for gas mileage

While our many collective years of driving experience may help guide you toward the best car in a given class, fuel economy is a bit more straightforward. To compile this list, we went straight to the source: the federal government’s fuel-economy website, which tracks the efficiency of every car found on dealer lots across the US.

Of course — and no pun intended — your mileage may vary. Reaching fuel economy figures can be easy with some cars and trickier with others. It’s also worth pointing out that your favorite car in a segment might not always be the most efficient, so it’s worth taking several models out for test drives before you decide on the car that’s best for your wants and needs. Prices are also subject to change from dealer to dealer.

Volkswagen Jetta: Up To 43 Mpg

The Jetta doesnt rely on a hybrid system and its diesel days are done. That makes it all the more impressive it’s capable of up to 43 mpg on models with the six-speed manual transmission itself a rarity on a new car for 2022. But the 158-horsepower turbo-four uses some trick engineering to extract respectable power while maintaining good fuel efficiency. While the Jetta isnt as powerful as some rivals like the Mazda 3, it offers more performance than other compact cars.

Versions with the eight-speed automatic get up to 40 or 41 mpg, which is still impressive, and even the higher-performance, 228-horsepower Jetta GLI does 37 mpg. The lightly revised 2022 Jetta lineup received revised styling, updated interior technology, and newly available driver assistance systems.

That may be, but if your car is getting long in the tooth, its time for an upgrade. There are so many reasons to do this, but one is especially important: you dont want to end up alienating a client from an affluent neighborhood where there are luxury cars in every driveway by showing up in an old clunker. Likewise, you cant exactly show up in a luxury car yourself if youre helping first-time home buyers with more meager means and you show up in a Lexus to show them a modest starter home!

Honda Insight: Up To 52 Mpg

Think of the Insight as a hybrid version of the previous Honda Civic sedan and you wouldnt be far off. And thats not such a bad thing given how competent the just-replaced Civic was, and it comes off on the Insight. Most versions are capable of up to 52 mpg with ease using a 151-horsepower hybrid powertrain that, while making some odd noises under hard acceleration, moves the car along seamlessly. It handles well, too, with a low center of gravity and relatively sporty handling among these kinds of cars.

For about $26,000 to start, base Insights come standard with LED headlights, forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, auto high beam assist, and automatic climate control. Upper trims add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, leather upholstery, and larger wheels. It may not have the fuel economy of an Elantra or Prius, but Insight rewards drivers a little more than those hybrids do.

These Used Cars Have The Best Gas Mileage For 2022

Car buyers have many things to consider when buying a used car, not the least of which is fuel economy. Electric vehicles are starting to make their presence known, but they sometimes lack the range and possess too high a price tag for average buyers. Trucks, vans, SUVs, and full-size cars provide some additional space and overall utility but lack the fuel-efficient punch provided by hybrid vehicles and cars with smaller engines.

Used hybrid cars and plug-in hybrids usually provide the best fuel economy and reasonable price combination compared to other automotive segments. They are usually less expensive than full electric cars, and they can achieve equal or greater ranges than cars with internal combustion engines. But do not think that non-hybrid cars are out of the question. There are several non-compact cars, and even midsize cars, that get good gas mileage.

With gas prices climbing, it is important to know which used cars get the best gas mileage for around or below $20,000 so that you do not have to continue to feel the pain at the pump in addition to paying full price for a new car.

Hyundai Elantra Hybrid 52/56/54

10 Sports Cars With the Best Gas Mileage GOBanking

MSRP from $23,750

Another offering from Hyundai, but this time the larger Elantra sedan, which offers similar efficiency to the Ioniq but with a longer, sleeker body and sharper lines. The Elantra and the Ioniq both use the same 1.6L 4-cylinder engine, which is a big part of what offers excellent fuel economy.

The Elantra Hybrid Blue trim offers an FWD drivetrain and up to 139-hp and 195 lb-ft of torque in total, which is quite decent in the hybrid bracket. It comes with hands-free smart trunk release, blind spot collision-avoidance assistance system, and heated front seats as standard features. The infotainment system also maintains a pleasing balance of buttons, dials and touchscreen features, which many users appreciate.
