A car title or Pink Slip is proof of legal ownership of a motor vehicle. Car titles are issued to the purchaser at the time of purchase or if the car is financed, the title will not be issued until the car loan is paid off. Owners that wish to sell their car will need to transfer ownership of the car to the buyer through the Department of Motor Vehicles . Car titles include: vehicle identification number , make and model of the car, manufacture date, name and address of the owner and the license plate number.

Step 1

Locate your Registration card. This should contain your vehicle information, including your title number. The title number is 8 digits long and can be located on the line above the Vehicle Identification Number .

Step 2

Look at your Registration renewal invitation, if you cannot locate your registration card. The title number is located on the line that includes the make and model of the vehicle.

Step 3

Apply for a duplicate title, if you are unable to complete the above steps. You will need to apply for the duplicate title in the county where the vehicle was originally recorded. There will be a fee to process the title. Fees will vary for each state. You will also need to provide the VIN number and the purchase date to apply for the duplicate title.

Step 4

Bring the application along with your driver’s license or other form of ID to your local DMV service center. There may be additional fees to process the title at the service center the same day.

What Can You Learn From The Title Of A Vehicle

You can check to see if a financial institution has a claim on the car by looking at the title. You can also check through your state DMVs website or get a vehicle history report. Remember, outstanding car debt has to be paid before the car ownership can transfer. Also, make sure the mileage and VIN match the information in the appropriate boxes. If they do not match, thats a red flag.

    Additional Documents May Be Required

When the state produces the new title, the buyer officially owns the car. The ownership transfer is complete. That said, you may need some additional documents beyond the car title.

One additional document you might need is the Transfer of Ownership form. This form is typically on the other side of the car title.

You might also need a bill of sale. The bill of sale should indicate how much the new owner paid for the car. The seller completes this document and gives it to the seller. Are you selling your car and need help preparing the bill of sale? Most state governments post blank bills of sale that you can use. Here are examples from several states:

You are not technically required to use the form posted by your state. The only requirement is that the form you use have all the information your state requires. Using a form provided by your state guarantees you include all the right information.

Note that some states will provide more than one version of the bill of sale. For example, one Arkansas bill of sale is only for sellers who also buy a car and want a certain tax credit.

If you use a form other than the one provided by your state, you should use one that has a line for the odometer reading. Some states require an odometer disclosure statement to transfer the title.

Buying A New Car: What Happens To The Title

In terms of a title, buying a new car is a no-brainer. The dealer takes care of all things title-related. You will pay whatever fees are involved, but the dealer deals with the paperwork.

When you buy a car, you either pay cash, lease, or finance. Only when you pay cash will you receive the original title. And, processing it might take as long as 30 days. Leasing a car is glorified renting. You never receive the actual title because the car never belongs to you.

When you finance a vehicle, you will receive a copy of the title within 90 days. It will identify the lender as a lienholder. When youve paid the loan in full, you will receive the actual title reflecting you as the owner free and clear.

What Happens If Your Car Is Seized By The Lender

How to get a replacement lost car title – do it yourself

If your car is seized the lender can sell it to cover the remaining costs of the loan and any costs related to its seizure and sale.

    If this happens:

    • you will get the leftover money if your car is sold for more than the remaining cost of the loan and costs for the seizure and sale of your car
    • in some provinces and territories you will have to pay the lender the difference if your car sells for less than the remaining cost of the loan and costs for the seizure and sale of your car

If there is more than one lien on your car, the proceeds from the sale will be used to pay all lenders back. Any leftover money will be returned to you. If there is a shortfall, you will have to cover the remaining cost of the loan. Check with other lien holders to make sure they have been paid and liens have been removed from your car.

    Seize or sue

In some provinces and territories, the lender must choose to either seize the car or sue you. If the lender chooses to seize the car, you will no longer owe the lender any money.

    Seize and sue

In other provinces and territories, the lender may seize the car and sue you. If you still owe money to the lender after your car has been seized and sold, the lender can also sue you if you dont pay them.

Selling Or Trading A Car: What Do You Need To Know

You dont need to do anything when selling a car to a dealership or trading it in as part of the transaction for acquiring another vehicle. Whether you own a clear title or your title has a lienholder, the dealership will handle any title issues.

Selling your car to another private individual, however, requires some effort from you. If youve satisfied the vehicle loan and have a free-and-clear title, you only need to fill in the transfer information. This includes you and the buyer signing in the appropriate places. Both parties should keep a copy.

Note: Some states require the signatures to be notarized. As part of this transaction, you will also need a bill of sale. You and the buyer should keep copies with the signatures of both parties. Unless you know the buyer, accept only cash or a cashiers check as payment.

If you still owe money on the vehicle and a lien is on the title, things just got more complicated. The lender will want the loan paid off to release the lien. At this point, the easiest way forward is to complete the entire transaction at the lenders offices. If its a local bank or credit union, everything can be done right then and there. You will need to make arrangements with your lender.
