How Doordash Compares To Its Competitors

Doordash Driver: 8 Things I Wish I Knew Before Dashing

DoorDash is not the only food delivery service out there, but it has been rapidly growing and it sets itself apart in several ways. As a consumer, the biggest way it sets itself apart is the quantity and quality of restaurants on its app.

If you want to become a Dasher, here’s how it compares:

DoorDash vs. Grubhub: As a driver, GrubHub pays a flat fee per order, plus 100% of your tips. DoorDash is similar, but since they don’t have a flat fee per order, there is potential to earn a bit more. DoorDash has peak pricing and other bonuses that can incentivize drivers.

DoorDash vs. Uber Eats: Uber Eats has one of the more complicated formulas for how it pays its drivers. Drivers are paid for each delivery based on an equation that contains a pickup fee, a drop-off fee, and a mileage fee that covers the distance from picking up the food to dropping it off at the customer. Drivers receive 100% of any tips customers leave in the app. DoorDash has a much clearer approach to pricing, but mileage will vary on which is better.

DoorDash vs. Instacart: Instacart allows you both to shop for groceries and deliver them. What’s great about Instacart is that you can see the location, order size, and delivery all in the app before you decide to take an order. This gives you solid transparency before you begin. Doordash Makes It Hard To Stop Both Literally And Figuratively

After getting verbally accosted by both a 22-year-old and a Fortune 1000 company over $6 worth of McDonalds, I was honestly ready to throw in the towel and go home.

Thats when DoorDash showed me just how hard it is to stop DoorDashing. both literally and figuratively.

In a literal sense, the DoorDash Driver app makes it pretty inconvenient to pause or end your shift.

  • If youre in the middle of a delivery, you have to tap Menu and toggle Stop orders after this delivery.
  • If youre between orders, you have to go to the Dasher menu and toggle Pause orders.
  • Those both sound really simple, but if youre currently on a delivery, its hard to find a minute to fiddle around with your phone. Youre usually driving, walking, or trying to find the customer.

If youre between deliveries, on busy nights DoorDash will bombard you with order requests. This is normally a good thing, but order requests take up the whole screen, and I personally couldnt figure out a way to end my shift prematurely without having to decline or let expire an order or two.

This was a bummer because declining orders hurts your Driver Acceptance Rate and only drivers with an Acceptance Rate above 70% will achieve the coveted Top Driver status and get first dibs on the highest-paying orders.

However, while World of Warcraft is pretty manipulative, DoorDash is just inherently fun. I never felt taken advantage of while Dashing I was just enjoying myself.

What Type Of Auto Insurance Do You Need To Drive For Doordash

Before you rush out the door with keys in hand to start driving for DoorDash, keep in mind the fact that you need more than your private car insurance policy to drive for DoorDash. The company may not specifically check that you have added business coverage to your insurance policy, but you will be out of luck with your insurance company if you are involved in an accident while driving for DoorDash.

    Passenger Rules With Grubhub

Like the other two big food delivery companies, Grubhub doesn’t have any rules against bringing passengers with you on deliveries. Instead, their website is focused on the overall process of becoming and being a Grubhub driver. As long as you work efficiently enough to gain good reviews from your customers, there is no reason why having a passenger will inhibit your productivity.

    How To Contact Doordash Support

    Doordash just don

As a DoorDash driver, there are several reasons why you may need to contact DoorDash help. These reasons may include:

    • Canceling an order because a restaurant doesnt have it
    • A DoorDash customer cannot be reached
    • The restaurant is closed
    • Problems with drop off
    • Issues with the app

Those are just a few common reasons to call Dasher support, but the reasons are limitless. For every order you receive, there is a help option towards the bottom of the order screen. From there, you can either select chat or call Dasher support. Wait times vary, but from experience, chat is typically faster since most Dashers prefer to call, probably since phone conversations can be faster than chat conversations.

If you want to email them and/or if you are on your computer you can simply go to their website www.doordash.com, and scroll to the bottom left corner of the page where it says Help. The same options on your mobile app will also appear on the website.

If you have any other questions, you can always contact Dasher Support they will be more than happy to assist you. I have never had a negative experience with Dasher support and have communicated with people from different backgrounds. I have also been driving for DoorDash for seven years on top of that!

Health And Safety Are A Priority When Doordashing With Passengers

No matter who you choose to bring along for the ride, it remains paramount that you keep health and safety integral at all times. That means a few basic rules must be adhered to, such as ensuring you have clean hands when handling the delivery bag and that your car remains clean and hygienic for transporting the food.

These sample rules must also apply to your passengers so, if youre planning on DoorDashing with your child on the way home from the school run to make an extra few bucks, make sure they cant get hold of the delivery with any grubby fingers!

Its Definitely Still A Customer Service Job

If youve had a customer service job in the past, you know exactly what I mean. Heres the story of how I pissed off a DoorDash customer and got an unpleasant phone call from DoorDash themselves.

My first half dozen orders went as smooth as the butter on a Popeyes biscuit. Grab the food, deliver the food, get positive feedback, profit. This was easy even fun.

Then came my 7th order. It was supposed to be a routine mission. Just bring McDonalds to an apartment 1.5 miles away. Got it.

Weirdly, McDonalds stacked her food and drinks together inside one giant, sealed paper bag, precariously handing it to me like a newborn baby. I nestled it in the passenger footwell, driving slowly over speed bumps to avoid spilling the mocha on the cheeseburgers.

Upon arrival, I noticed that the customer had marked Please bring to my door on her instructions. This was impossible since her lobby was locked up for the night but thankfully, a curious staff member let me in.

    DoorDash?

    Yep.

Please leave the food on the DoorDash delivery table. We dont allow non-guests past the lobby. Ill lock the door behind you.

Woof. Alrighty, then who was I to argue?

He locked the door behind me and disappeared, and as I was texting the customer, some rando in swim trunks swooped in and took the food.

    Then, my phone rang.

Umm that wasnt your friend who just got it?

    Wait, someone stole my food???

    She hung up on me.

Id survived the mocha mishap, but was certainly reminded of one thing:

It does not. Dashers are independent contractors, and as such are responsible for any withholding tax required by the state and the IRS. How You Can Earn Way More Than Average

5 Tips to Make $200 a Day as a Doordash Driver

While most people earn just a little extra cash driving for DoorDash, some drivers earn $40 or more per hour. Heres how they report to do it.

    • Only accept large orders- DoorDash ranks you on your acceptance rate, but they wont stop you from driving without a warning first. Feel free to be picky about your orders, and find the largest orders. DoorDash customers tip based on a percentage system, so you want the biggest orders possible.
    • Avoid high traffic areas- Traffic slows you down, and it makes parking nearly impossible. Try to avoid orders from the heart of downtown where its tough to figure out where to meet someone. You never want to pay for parking, because that will eat most of your profits.
    • Drive during peak activity- Lunchtime and dinnertime offer great opportunities for Dashers. Dont bother working if nobody is ordering.
    • Use multiple apps- Successful gig economy workers dont rely on a single app for their income. Become certified as an Uber, UberEats, Lyft, and DoorDash driver, so you can guarantee work any time.

How Much Can Someone Make Driving For Doordash

DoorDash Delivery Driver Leaves Note For Customer Who Didn

To make more sense of this, let’s take a look at a typical example of what a driver might earn, and how those earnings might break down after all expenses are considered:

    • Driver makes two deliveries per hour at an average price of $8.50 per delivery.
    • Driver earns $17 for the hour before expenses.
    • The cost of business use insurance adds $15 to their premium or approximately $0.50 per day.
    • It costs approximately one gallon of gas, per every three deliveries.
    • The price per gallon of gas is currently $4 per gallon.
    • Depreciation on the driver’s car is $0.30 per delivery.
    • The need for more frequent oil changes breaks down to $0.25 per delivery made.

If you calculated all of that up and assumed that the driver did the work part-time , you would see that although their earnings appeared to be approximately $68, the reality is that they only earned $52.43 after all of those expenses are taken out. That brings their hourly net profit down to $13.10 per hour instead of $17.

All of that said, this does not necessarily mean that everyone should forgo driving for DoorDash. Truth be told, $13.10 per hour is a decent wage in many areas, and there are many ways to boost your earnings beyond the $17 per hour that we discussed in the example.
