Your vehicle registration may be renewed online 90 days before the expiration date or up to 9 months after the expiration date, if you have not received a citation for expired registration. Your expiration month will not change.
There is a two business day payment processing hold before your sticker is printed. Please allow up to three weeks for processing and mailing.

Registration renewal notices are mailed to all registered vehicle owners. To register by mail, send the following to your county tax office:
- Renewal notice
- A copy of your Vehicle Inspection Report
- Proof of current liability insurance
- All fees listed on your renewal notice
To register your vehicle in person, take your registration renewal notice and proof of current liability insurance to your county tax office or an approved substation.
If you did not receive your renewal notice, you can renew your registration using your:
- License Plate Number
- Registration Receipt from the previous year

- Online License Plate Renewal You may update your legal Illinois residence address when you renew your registration. Your Registration ID and PIN are located on the renewal notice you may have received in the mail and also on your current registration card. If you do not have a renewal notice or a current registration card, please call the Public Inquiry Division at 800-252-8980 or 217-785-3000 to obtain your Registration ID and PIN number. Accepted forms of payment include credit card , or personal check. A processing fee will be added to your transaction if you use a credit card. There is no fee to change an address if renewing your registration.
- Mail Mark the Address Change box on the front of the renewal notice and make changes in the Address Change section on the back of the notice. Make check payable to the Illinois Secretary of State, sign your name on the bottom portion of your renewal notice, and mail in. You must allow 30 days for delivery of your renewal sticker.
- In person Visit your nearest Secretary of State facility, currency exchange or participating bank. Bring your renewal notice and payment. Acceptable payments include cash, check, credit card or traveler’s check. A bank processing fee will be added to your transaction if you use a credit card. There is no fee to change an address if renewing your registration.

Ineligibility For A Multi
Multi-year discounts are not available in all cases.
- The two-year registration is not available if:
- Your vehicle has a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more
- Your vehicle is registered under the International Registration Plan
- You have paid the uninsured motor vehicle fee
- You live in an emissions area and only have one year left on the emissions inspection.
How To Replace Replace Your Vehicle Registration Or Plate Decal
To request a replacement registration and/or plate decal online, you will need your:
- Vehicle registration number
- Driver’s license, ID, or FID number
- Email address
- Applicable fee
If you need to change your address, be sure to change it before processing your transaction.
Your registration can be printed immediately or it will be mailed to you in 7-10 days. If you request a decal, it will be mailed within 7-10 days.

Renewal Fees And Multi
Your registration fee is determined by the type of vehicle and the empty weight or gross weight of your vehicle. The type of license plate you purchase, whether you register for more than one year, and renewing your registration after it has expired may result in additional fees. Some vehicles may also be subject to a highway use fee.
If you are eligible to receive a multi-year fee discount and renew your vehicle registration for two years, you will receive a $2 discount. You can save even more by renewing your registration online or over the phone for three years and receiving a $3 discount. If you renew your registration online, you will receive an additional $1 discount for using the internet.
The discounts for online and two-year or three-year renewals are not pro-rated and not refundable if the registration is canceled before it expires.
Partial refunds do not include all fees paid at the time of registration. Fees not refunded are the Highway Use Fees, one-time plate reservation fees, Virginia Road Tax for heavy trucks, and any late fees.
Duplicate Vehicle Registration Certificate
If you lose your vehicle registration certificate, you can order a duplicate copy online. Licence plate expiry stickers are no longer required as of January 1, 2021.

RMV began offering this service in April and already more than 1,600 customers have printed out their own registration copy. Additionally, every customer knew immediately whether the RMV had approved the application for a duplicate registration.
The duplicate registration online home printout service is one of 19 new Internet transactions available at www.mass.gov/rmv which have increased customer traffic by 40%. In 2010 the RMV processed 132,664 duplicate registrations with 35,955 processed online. Customers need a MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express or electronic check in order to complete a transaction.
In addition to the real-time online duplicate registration service, customers can use the RMV website to order a new license and complete all the necessary paperwork, register as an organ tissue donor, book a road test and sign up for a free reminder service.
