Many people aren’t sure how to proceed after getting an appraisal, however. It’s great to have a value, but what are you supposed to do now? With this in mind, we’ve come up with a few scenarios that will help you formulate a plan.

Like KBB and Edmunds, NADA allows you to find your vehicles value, but it uses slightly different criteria. NADA focuses on the vehicles wholesale price, current market price, and the demand for cars in your area. NADAs car value appraisals tend to be higher than what KBB or Edmunds will calculate, which is something to keep in mind. NADA also offers a variety of vehicle comparison tools, but it doesnt have a used car marketplace.
An Alternative To Calculating The Actual Cash Value
If you find your insurance companys ACV not fair enough in comparison to your calculations, then you should try checking out recent comparable car sales in your area online. Doing this will help you verify if the cars were sold for the prices you calculated. Wed advise you to get about three or more estimates.
Another option you can try is to make inquiries from a car dealership or repair shop. Only do this if you believe theyre qualified enough to give you the right ACV estimate of your car. Bear in mind that youll need to have the car towed to their facility.

Information You’ll Need To Estimate Your Car’s Value
Pricing guides are just that guides that help you estimate your cars value. You wont be able to follow any of them to the penny. Even so, youll typically need to provide the following information to get the most accurate price:
Year, make and model. Say you have a 2015 Nissan Sentra SL. “Sentra” is the model, and SL is the trim level. To find your trim level, look for the chrome letters on the back of the car. You can also find this in your owners manual or on your vehicles title.
Color and optional equipment. Some colors, such as silver and white, are more popular and will command a higher price. Optional equipment includes any features that dont come standard with the model. Examples are heated seats, a sunroof or leather upholstery. Sometimes, optional equipment is grouped in a package and given a fancy name, such as the sport or convenience package.
Vehicle condition. Different pricing guides use different ways of describing the condition of the vehicle. For example, Edmunds uses Outstanding, Clean, Average, Rough and Damaged. Whichever words they use, read the description of the condition level carefully and be honest when evaluating what matches your car people tend to overestimate their cars condition.

How To Compare Car Prices In Your Area
After getting a few car value estimates, its a good idea to compare your cars appraisal to what the vehicle is being sold for in your area.
Look at popular used car marketplaces like Craigslist, eBay Motors, Facebook Marketplace, and Autotrader that advertise local used vehicles for sale. Start by searching for your cars specific make and model, with a similar model year and mileage. It doesnt need to be an exact match.
This should give you a good idea of what your car is actually worth. For example, if KBB estimates your cars value at $10,000 but used models in your area are going for less than $7,000, its a good indicator of what your car will really be worth when you sell it.
If Youre Upside Down On Your Loan
Knowing your cars value can also give you a sense of whether youre upside down on your car loan also known as having negative equity, it means owing more than your car is worth. This could happen if you have a long loan term or made a small car down payment or no down payment at all.
If youre upside down and hoping to sell your car, you may not be able to sell it for enough to cover your loan balance, which can make it more difficult to pay off the loan and sell the car. And if you want to trade in a car with negative equity, youll either need to pay off the amount you owe on your loan out of your own pocket or roll your negative equity into your new car loan.
Rolling your loan balance over into your new loan may seem ideal if you dont have the cash on hand to pay off your existing loan. But doing this makes it more likely youll become upside down on your new loan, and a bigger loan amount means you could pay more in total interest.

How Does An Accident Affect A Cars Value
The average impact on retail price is just under $500 for a vehicle that has been in an accident, but that impact jumps to an average of $2,100 for a vehicle thats sustained severe damage. Only Carfax gives you a VIN-specific price for every used car based on its complete history. Instead of providing you with only a suggested retail value, Carfax can tell you what a specific vehicle with a specific VIN is worth based on its history as reported to Carfax. See Comparison Chart.
If You’re Shopping For A Used Car At A Dealership
This option is for people who are buying a used car, not selling. In this case, go on Edmunds and enter the details of the vehicle as if it were your own. The dealer retail value will be the most pertinent to you. This is an estimate of what you’ll pay for that same car at a dealership.
The dealer retail value gives you a reference point. It shows whether or not the advertised price is a fair or great deal. If the dealership’s asking price is higher than what you see on Edmunds, you can reference it and ask the dealer to match or beat that price. This sort of “informed negotiation” typically goes over better with a salesperson since it shows that you’ve done your research.

What Adds To The Value Of A Car:
- A full-service history stamped in the service book. A franchise dealer service history is always looked upon as better, especially for younger vehicles 1-5 years old if it has been recently serviced all the better.
- Low mileage is important relative to the age of the car as the lower the mileage, the higher the value of the vehicle in general terms. However, you must also be cautious that the mileage is verified.
- It has a current valid NCT in the case of an Irish car, or MOT in the case of a UK registered car. A current NCT and full NCT history with no tests missed will always add to the value of a vehicle as compared to one without this in its history.
- Current road tax will add to the value of a car, especially if there is a long period already paid up as it will mean one less bill to be paid by the new owner.
- A clean car with no damage to the exterior or interior will be valued more than one where there is cosmetic repair work to be undertaken to get the vehicle to “showroom” condition. We would suggest looking for scratches or damages to wheels and trims. Of course, normal wear and tear should be expected in keeping with the age of the vehicle as it ages.
- New or nearly new tyres will also add to the value of a car as tyres are an expensive purchase and if you can get another 6-12 months out of the tyres currently on the car, then it benefits any potential buyer.

The Importance Of Style And Options
After you’ve entered the vehicle year and make, you’ll select the style, also called the trim level. The style can refer to the type of engine, standard features, or the number of doors it has. Here’s a refresher on trim levels.
Major features, such as the car’s transmission, engine type and all-wheel drive, can have a big impact on the value of the car. The same goes for options such as leather seats, navigation, a sunroof or automatic climate control. If you can remember your car’s options off the top of your head, great. If not, here are some suggestions on where to get the information you need.
The vehicle’s original window sticker is the best place to find the options. Unfortunately, few people actually hang on to the sticker. Without it, your best bet is to sit in your car and make a note of its options.
If you’re using a smartphone, tablet or laptop , you can complete the options check from the driver’s seat. It is crucial to get the style and options right. Without them, you may be under- or overvaluing your car.
