PSE Ask an Energy Advisor | How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

Many new electric vehicles have a range of 150-300+ miles on a full charge and can conveniently charge fully overnight. The average American drives less than 40 miles per day. Even if you have a long commute or take long trips, with variety of models available and a growing network of public charging stations, there is an electric vehicle that will fit your lifestyle.

How Much Is The Congestion Charge

As of April 2019, electric vehicles are eligible for an exemption form both the London Congestion Charge and the;Ultra Low Emission Zone charge.

In order to qualify for these exemptions, drivers will need to register their electric vehicle with Transport for London at a cost of £10, which needs to be renewed each year.

The Congestion Charge zone;runs every day, between 07:00-22:00 . Unregistered vehicles;will need to pay £15 each day you drive within the boundary.;

The Ultra Low Emission Zone, by contrast, runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week , within the same area of central London as the Congestion Charge. Most vehicles that aren’t registered will have to pay;£12.50 per day. Although heavier vehicles, such as lorries, may need to pay up to £100 per day.

That means a typical daily charge for an unregistered car to drive in London;is £24 per day. Register an electric vehicle today to avoid paying more than you have to.

The Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment: $200

Plug-in vehicles today typically come with the ability to charge at home on standard household current, 120 volts, which is called Level 1 charging. They also can charge on faster 240-volt circuits, called Level 2 charging.

If the vehicle has a small battery, under 10 kWh, you can often make do with the Level 1 charging system that comes with the vehicle. For plug-in cars with larger batteries, Level 2 is your best bet for overnight charging and quick top-ups.

Most automakers with plug-in vehicles in their lineups have a preferred charger provider, but there are dozens of companies selling EVSEs. A search online will help you find the features, power output and pricing that best suit your need. Just search for “EVSE” or “EV home chargers.” Prices for quality Level 2 home systems can range from just under $200 to more than $1,000 before installation.

Different Costs For Different Ways To Charge

Approximately 80% of EV charging is done at home, making it easier to calculate your monthly charging costs. But many people lack accessible home charging; some have commutes that require them to charge at work; others take advantage of free charging stations in shopping centers; while still others charge at high-speed charging stations near highways while on long-distance trips. So the actual cost for charging an electric vehicle depends on where the charging is done. Here are the methods ranked from least to most expensive:

How Much Electricity Does An Ev Use

To calculate the real-world cost of charging an electric vehicle, you need to know how efficient the vehicle is in using electricity. This is measured in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles: how many kWh does an EV consume in driving 100 miles? This figure is the equivalent of miles per gallon . For example, if an EV has an efficiency rating of 25 kWh/100 miles, it can drive 4 miles on a single kWh. With a 50 kWh battery, that same EV has a maximum range of 200 miles.;

The average American daily commute is almost 40 miles. In theory, an EV with an efficiency rating of 25 kWh/100 miles would use 10 kWh per day. If that EV owner pays $.10/kWh for electricity, then they are spending a dollar a day on fuel.;Your mileage may vary, as they say. In a gas-powered car, MPG ratings are higher for highway driving than for city driving, since gas cars waste more gasoline idling in stop-and-go city traffic than they do on highways. For electric vehicles, it’s just the opposite: EVs use very little energy idling but are constantly using power on highways, so city driving is more efficient than highway driving.;

Average Cost Of Charging Electric Cars

;While the cost varies surprisingly depending on where, when, and how you charge, it is sure that the overall cost is considerably less than running an internal combustion engine car. The capacity of an electric cars battery is expressed in kilowatt hours , which is a measure of the energy storage available in the cells. For example, a KIA Niro EV packs a 64kWh battery. ;So, to calculate how much it costs to charge your vehicle, simply, you need to look at the cost of electricity and do the calculation.

;As of simple terms, the formula is: Size of battery x Electricity cost of your supplier = Cost to charge an electric car from absolutely empty to full.

;For example: KIA Niro EV has a 64 kWh battery . The cost per kWh of electricity is 0.17 , so the cost to charge the ;e-Niro battery from 0% to 100% is 64 kWh X 0.17 = 10.88;

How Much Does An Ev Add To Your Electricity Bill

About 80% of EV charging happens at home, according to Energy.gov. So how much does it cost to charge an electric car at home? Well, that depends on the type of charger you have and the type of vehicle.

Assuming:

  • 40 kWh battery
  • 30 amp level 2 charger delivering 7.2 kW

It will take around 6 hours to fully charge your car. Thats based on 40kWh divided by 7.2KW which is 5.55 hours. We rounded up to 6 hours because your charging efficiency slows down as the battery charges.

That 5.55 hours of charging time will use around 40 kWh. Thats the number of kilowatt hours based on the KW of the electrical item multiplied by the number of hours .

So now we know how many kWh well use to charge an EV. Now to calculate how much that will cost.

The Texas average electricity rate is 11.4 cents per kwh, according to EIA.gov. That means it will cost you around $4.56 to charge an EV at your Texas home.

So lets finish the math and see how much an EV will add to your electricity bill per year.

Lets assume you get 200 miles per charge, and you drive 13,500 miles a year, which is the US average. Thats 68 charges per year. If you do 80% of your charging at home, youll charge your vehicle at home 54 times each year.

In Texas it will cost you around $246 annually to charge your EV. And that low cost is what makes electric vehicles popular in Texas.

The good thing is that you can usually track your charging activity using mobile apps that work with the chargers.

For many though, it;will likely make sense to invest in a home charger. Lets get into the costs associated with that.

The Cost Can Vary Significantly Depending On Where And How You Plug Into The Grid

In general, it costs less to run an electric vehicle than a comparable internal combustion-powered model. However, depending on how, where, and when you charge an EV, the cost can vary wildly. Charging an EV at home is usually the cheapest way to go, though you may incur some added costs to make the process more efficient. One of the leading obstacles potential buyers of electric vehicles have is uncertainties about how charging works and about what impact it will have on their budget and on their lives. Fortunately, learning how to analyze the cost of charging can actually turn that obstacle into an incentive. EV charging is almost always less expensive than fueling a gas-powered vehicle. In some instances, it can even be free.;

The challenge with wrapping one’s head around EV charging is the diversity of options. Usually the only decisions a driver makes about fueling a gas-powered car are which gas station to patronize and what grade of gasoline to use. We are comfortable with considering miles-per-gallon estimates when we consider buying a gas-powered car. Suddenly, with an electric vehicle, all the calculations change. But once one wraps one’s head around the new calculations and settles into new fueling habits, EV charging is inexpensive and easy.
