Selling privately isnt quite so straightforward. Any buyer should want to come and view the vehicle. When they contact you, ask for their name and address, mobile number and landline. No legitimate buyer should have a problem supplying these.

Should I Part Exchange Or Sell My Car

Used car price guides: how much is my car worth?

Youll more than likely get more money for your car by selling it rather than part exchanging, and its easy to sell your car through carwow.

Part exchanging, however, allows you to just drop your old car off and drive away in the new one. It also eliminates the gap between selling your old car and getting the new one. You wont get as much for it though, as the dealer will want to leave room to make money on it when they sell it on.

Why Do Some Cars Depreciate Faster Than Others

Car prices trend downwards over time. A new car typically loses 20% of its value in the first year, then 15% of its value each year after that. So after 5 years, it may be worth only 40% of its original purchase price. Our History-Based Value considers data that affect depreciation prices, including the cars brand, accident or damage history, title history, service records, and the number of owners its had.

Do Car Valuations Take Into Account Spec

Simply put, yes.

In a slightly more complex manner, the general specification of your car is taken into account behind the scenes but rather than basing the cost on how much you or the original owner paid for it, it’s based on the worth of those add-ons now.

The higher or more sought-after the spec of your car, the more itll be worth.

What Is My Car Worth

Aside from the list above there are a number of factors unique to your car that could increase or decrease its value. These factors often cant be assessed in online valuations, but will be vital for maximising value when the time comes to sell. At Motorway, we work with over 5,000 car dealers so we know the small details they will be looking for, and those they will want to avoid.

Increases value:

  • Optional extrasThe increased value, if any, from optional add-ons can vary significantly and will have to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. However, add-ons such as leather seats and premium sound systems do consistently increase value. While others such as four-wheel drive and automatic transmission often do depend on location and car model.
  • Still under warrantyThe safety net of a manufacturers warranty can give buyers some extra reassurance. It may not be a dramatic difference but an in-date warranty will give a boost to your cars value.
  • Personalisation/modificationsIn some cases, especially when cosmetic, modifications may not decrease your cars value but it is unlikely to increase it. This is because many buyers, especially car dealers, are looking for cars with a wide appeal as more potential buyers in the future often corresponds with higher resale price. By definition, most personalisations reduce that mainstream appeal and so can actually hinder a cars value.

What Factors Make Up A Used Vehicles Value

A used cars value is dependent on many different factors, all of which carry different amounts of weight. Some of the most common things that affect your vehicles value are:

  • The economy: Market conditions make a big difference in the value of your vehicle because demand is a driving force. Typically when the economy is in a downturn, less people are buying vehicles, causing demand to decrease. On the other hand, when the economy is booming, likely more people are purchasing vehicles, increasing their demand and therefore their value. Lasting impacts from the pandemic on the auto industry, combined with current levels of inflation also has an impact on used car value.
  • Make and model: Your cars make and model make a huge impact on how much your car is worth. Youre not going to get even close to the same amount for an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser as you would for a Mercedes Benz. Luxury and off-roading cars often come at a higher cost than your regular daily commuters.
  • Year: Typically, the older your vehicle, the less it is worth. This is true most of the time, except when appraising classic cars and some hard to find makes and models.
  • Vehicle condition: When it comes to a vehicles condition, the interior, exterior, and mechanical condition all matter. You will want to be honest about the condition of your vehicle in order to get the most accurate quotes.

Q: What Is A Cat ‘n’ Or Cat ‘s’ Car And Can You Do A Valuation For Me On My Damaged Car

A: Category C – Now CAT S . An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road. The DVLA will require confirmation that the vehicle is now roadworthy and repairs carried out to a minimum standard. There is a certain amount of paperwork involved and a VIC Inspection and Vehicle Identity Form must be completed.

Category D – Now CAT N . A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair possibly because it falls within the BER Beyond Economical Repair category. The normal problem being, that to replace any parts would be more expensive than the car is worth and the decision is generally based on economic criteria rather than the severity of the damage. However, the car could be repaired and returned to the road.

When it comes to damage, because the amount of variables is so great, there is no fixed pricing structure or formula. For example, a car with panel damage, kerbed alloys etc will fall into the Private Poor category. A car which has only minor damage should obtain a pricing level just below Private Good. Normally, a price somewhere in the middle ground between Private Good and Private Poor will be a good indication but ultimately, its down to the amount of damage or the amount on non-working items the car has.

Do I Have Negative Equity

Negative equity happens when you owe more on your vehicle than it is worth, otherwise known as being upside down on your loan. Since the value of your car is a major part of this equation, having an accurate idea of its value is extremely important.

Oftentimes, negative equity is reflected in a loan-to-value ratio, or LTV. This ratio compares how much your car is worth with how much you owe on your car loan. Lenders use LTVs to help calculate risk. If you have an LTV over 100%, you have negative equity.
