Acetone As An Alternative

How Do I Remove a Sticker From My Car?

Acetone is a solvent that can dissolve paint, grease, and varnish stains. It is a handy and cheap chemical that is commonly used for spot removal and can be a convenient tool for safely removing car stickers. It is a safe alternative to heat when it comes to windshields and windows. Soak a paper towel in acetone and wrap it around the decal that you want to remove. Let it sit for half an hour, then gently wipe the substance off with a dry paper towel.

Taking off the car signs or flags from the painted portion of the car is a trickier process. Keep some Q tips, a bucket of soapy water, acetone, and a cloth ready. Dip the Q tips in acetone and soak a corner of the car sign with it until it starts to loosen and come apart. Gently pull at the decals edge then immediately wipe off the acetone with the soapy rag. Repeat the process till the car sign or decal comes off entirely. Finally, clean the cars surface with soapy water then rinse with clean water and allow the surface to air dry. Finally, apply wax polish to leave your vehicle with a sparkling exterior.

How To Apply A Car Decal Properly

Learning how to remove car decals and doing it successfully doesnt mean that you are not going to apply new decals on your car anymore. To make sure that you wont have a hard time taking it off the next time you change your mind about it, you can learn how to apply it properly. This will help you remove car decals a little easier. Here are some of the tips and steps you can do.

  • Refrain from putting car decals on the bumper. Putting it on a window makes it easier to remove the next time.
  • Clean and apply a layer of wax beforehand on the area where you are planning to put the decals on. This will make the removal process easier.
  • You can choose to use bumper magnets when you want to put stickers there. You can customize or create your own removable bumper stickers. It is a more practical choice since you can just remove it anytime you want.
  • Dont put decals on trim pieces as this might block the edges making the removal a difficult process.
  • Do not put any decals on areas where the temperature gets hot like the hood and the tailpipe. This can cause the decals to melt and burn the finish.

When the sticker is fully removed, the next step is the remove the sticky residue left behind. It is important to take care of this step right away to avoid any dust or dirt sticking to the surface and scratching the glass.

Apply the Goo-Gone to the sticky adhesive. Make sure to cover the entire surface of the residue.

Goo-Gone and other adhesive removers:

Use the razor blade to scrape away the adhesive, similar to the technique used for scraping the sticker. You will see the adhesive gathering and being pushed off the glass.

Materials Needed

Step 1: Start to remove the decal with the razor scraper. Spray the decal with foaming glass cleaner. It acts as a lubricant to prevent the glass from getting easily scratched with the razor.

Holding your razor scraper at a 20-30 degree angle, get the corner of the blade under the edge of the decal and lift.

Step 2: Peel off the decal. Peel the decal across itself. If you have the upper right corner, peel the decal down and to the left, holding the vinyl decal close to the window.

An old decal will be dried on and the adhesive will be very difficult to remove in one piece. It will likely tear into smaller pieces, and you will need to repeat these first few steps multiple times to get the vinyl off the window.

Step 3: Heat the adhesive if needed. Gently heating the decal with a heat gun or hair dryer can make the decal adhesive soft again so its easier to remove.

  • Warning: Keep the heat gun moving over the decal and dont heat the glass more than comfortably warm to the touch. Overheating the glass can cause it to shatter.

After removing the decal, youll be left with tacky vinyl adhesive like sticker residue on the window.

Step 4: Remove the residue from the window. If you have a spray residue remover, spray it directly onto the sticky residue.

Use your plastic razor blade or razor scraper to work the residue loose from the window glass. It will form clumps as you work the razor over the glass.

Removing Decals From Glass

The primary tool used for removing an adhesive from a window is a razor blade. The razor should be clean and free of rust as these kinds of imperfections can scratch glass. If you prefer not to use a razor, you can use a plastic non-marring scraper, but this will not work as effectively and will require more effort.

First, clean the glass generously by applying window cleaner to the area around the sticker and wipe with a soft chamois cloth or microfiber towel. The glass cleaner will remove dirt, giving the razor blade a smooth surface to move across.

The next step is to hold the blade at a 30- to 45-degree angle at the outer corners of the decal and work the blade inwards toward the middle of the decal by applying gentle stop-and-go pressure. Slowly, the decal backing will separate from the glass, but this process requires some patience. Expect for some of the adhesive to remain stuck to the glass.

Once the decal has been fully removed, spray the area again with the glass cleaner and wipe away any remaining adhesive. Then buff the area one last time with a soft cloth to leave the surface smooth and dry.

Other Sticker Removal Techniques

Though the above methods are our personal favorites for sticker removal, others can work as well. Here are some additional sticker removal methods, plus some techniques on removing tough adhesives:

Essentially the opposite of the above technique, some people rave about using ice to freeze the adhesive from their cars. Just take a bag of ice, hold it against the sticker for several minutes and attempt to peel the sticker away. If its still adhering, hold the ice against the sticker for another minute or two.

This famously versatile lubricating spray also works as a great sticker remover. First, spray an ample amount of WD-40 onto the sticker and allow it to seep into the adhesive for several minutes. Then, slowly start peeling the sticker away from the cars surface.

In addition, WD-40 works as a fantastic remover for any adhesive left behind after taking a sticker off of both glass and paint.

Goo Gone

Goo Gone is a wonderful product for removing stickers. After all, thats what it was created for. However, unlike the above methods, it will likely mean a special trip to the store.

If you dont mind the extra effort, spray Goo Gone onto the sticker. Then, allow it to seep into the edges of the stickers adhesive for several minutes before slowly removing the sticker.

How Do You Remove Old Car Decals

The best way to remove old car decals is by using a paint scraper. You want to use the edge of the scraper and gently scrape off layers until you’ve removed all of the old adhesive from your car’s paint. This process can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours depending on how much adhesive there is.

The next step would be removing any leftover pieces with acetone, but make sure it doesn’t touch anything other than what you’re trying to remove. Acetone will dissolve most plastics, so don’t let it come in contact with any surfaces that are not plastic-based because they’ll melt or warp.

  • Identify the type of decal on your car
  • Use a razor blade to scrape off any residue left over from the sticker
  • Apply rubbing alcohol to a cotton cloth and rub it all over the area with the sticker residue
  • Scrub away at stubborn areas with an old toothbrush or scrub brush
  • Rinse clean with water, dry, and apply wax or sealant as needed
  • If there are still small pieces of adhesive left behind, use acetone nail polish remover to remove them
  • Use the rough side of a sponge to remove any residue left behind by the decal. Also, some alcohol might do the trick.

    Add Heat To Remove Vinyl

One of the very best ways to remove a car decal, especially vinyl ones, is to add a little heat to the sticker. This process works using multiple different but helpful tools. The easiest to use, and most accessible one, is a hair dryer.

Some car owners also suggest using a heat gun, but the heat setting is often too high, and a hair dryer is much easier to find in your home. If you have a smaller decal, this method works perfectly. Place your blow dryer on a moderate heat setting and allow the hot air to blow over the surface of the sticker.

Doing this causes the glue residue to gradually melt and loosen from the surface of the car. If you have a bigger vinyl decal, then using a pressure washer with hot water is another way to apply heat over a larger surface.

Place your pressure washer on a low setting to prevent any damage to your car. This sticker removal strategy is one of the best ways to preserve the paint job on your car since it requires minimal chemicals and low amounts of scraping afterward.
