Learn How to DRIVE a CAR – EASY LESSON # 1 || Expert TIPS in this video || Toronto Drivers

It pays to know the basics before your first lesson. The chances are that someone close to you owns a car, so get them to show you the key parts before your first lesson. Knowing your way around a vehicle beforehand might make it easier when your instructor comes to explain to you how to drive a car.

My Experience Learning How To Drive A Stick Shift

I had always wanted to drive a stick shift because it seemed very fun and cool. When I got my 2012 Mustang GT with a manual transmission, I was so excited about driving it. I looked up some guides on how to drive a manual car and didn’t think it was going to be difficult to learn. How wrong I was. My 412-horsepower and 390-torque Coyote engine was a difficult car to drive. I stalled it left and right.

My problem may have been that all the guides I looked at on the internet were telling me to “slowly roll off the clutch.” I was doing just that, but the ride was still jerky. Eventually I learned that you don’t need to step on the gas to get the car moving. Depending on the speed at which the engine idlesthat is, the speed it runs at when you’re not pushing on the gas pedaljust releasing the clutch some will move the car to an extent.

I played with the clutch and got a feel for the friction point or biting point that is, the point where the car is rolling, but the clutch is asking you to add more gas. At this point, you feel a little resistance, a little vibration from the clutch pedal the car is asking for enough gas so that it can run when the clutch is fully out.

After incorporating what I had learned with this new-found technique, my first start was the smoothest one yet. I wished that someone had told me this tip earlier, instead of me wasting two days trying to “roll off the clutch.”

How To Drive A Manual Car : : Step

First Driving Lesson

The basic skill for learning to drive a manual car is clutch control.

Work on level ground, preferable in a parking lot or a road with few vehicles

Turn off the vehicle and roll down your window

The pedals from right to left are: accelerator, brake and clutch or C, B, A.

The clutch engages and dis-engages the motor and transmission

Depress the clutch pedal, and locate the gears in the transmission. When the transmission is in neutral the selector will move side-to-side. Know that the selector rests between the middle gears

Put the transmission into 1st gear – to the left and up. Isolate the clutch. In other words, use just the clutch to get the vehicle going

The friction point is where the clutch engages the drive train and the vehicle begins to move

Learn where the friction point is by both feeling the vehicle and watching the tachometer

To learn where the friction is, apply the parking brake and release the clutch slowly. Push the clutch back in when you see the tachometer dip and feel the feel want to move forward.

After you’ve practiced with the parking brake applied, release the parking brake and allow the vehicle to move forward without applying the accelerator.

Control the clutch through the friction point to prevent stalling

After you’ve confidently located the friction point and can move the vehicle forward without stalling the engine, move to lesson two which combines the clutch and the accelerator.

Basic Car Engine & Transmission Knowledge

What makes a car go? The engine and transmission, thats right! Were not saying you should be a star mechanic, or an engineer – but having some basic knowledge of the functions and operation of your vehicles working and integral parts is a good way to familiarize yourself with the machine before operating it.

If you have an automatic transmission, for example, knowing when and how to shift into gear is a basic skill that will not only allow you to go, but itll shed some light on the fragility and potential for repair of your transmission and engine. If you have a shiftronic transmission feature, knowing when youre able to safely and efficiently downshift in traffic is a great skill to know – and further, if you have a manual transmission, knowing about the complex relationship between clutch, flywheel and engine is a bit of knowledge that can help to translate the muscle memory youll need to drive without grinding gears too badly.

This knowledge should also extend to involve some numbers. Its critically important that you know how much power your vehicle possesses and what you should expect in terms of delivery of that power sometimes a new driver can be taken by surprise, so knowing a bit about your engine and transmission is a good way to ease into the role of driver.

Shop Around For An Instructor

Choosing the right instructor is crucial to how quickly you learn. Dont just go with the first instructor you find. Ring around the big driving schools and local approved driving instructors and question them on their prices, qualifications, experience and track record. Word of mouth from people you trust is usually a good way of choosing an instructor.

But, if youre really not happy with your instructor, dont be afraid to switch. It could save you time and money in the long run.

Buying Or Leasing A Car

You can search the Internet or call the local transportation ministry in your city to find out about car dealers or car rental agencies.

If you only need a car for short periods, you can rent a car from a car rental agency. Make sure car insurance is included in your car rental agreement if you need it.

In some cities, there are car-sharing programs that let you use a car without buying, leasing or renting one. You may want to research this option to see if it meets your needs.

How to Drive a Car for Beginners

Before you hit the road, start by training your teen on the basics: demonstrate how to adjust the seat, and the side and rearview mirrors safely to fit their needs. Make any other accommodations that are necessary, such as tilting the steering wheel.

Review the controls and features of the car. Give your teen an education on how each of these works:

  • Dashboard controls
  • Steering wheel and seat adjustment
  • Mirror adjustment
  • Safety features like air bags and seat belts
  • Wipers
  • Gas, brakes
  • Warning indicator lights on dashboard

Also, be sure to show your teen where the registration, insurance card and car manual are located.

Things You Should Know When Driving For The First Time

  • 1

Adjust the vehicle so that you are comfortable. Before you start the car, make sure that you can see out of all mirrors and that the seat is adjusted to your height. Being comfortable will help you relax during this somewhat nerve rattling experience. The following guide is an excellent assistant when you try to adjust your seat and mirrors.

  • 2

Do not overthink the situation. Driving a car is an experience that requires you to multitask. As you sit in the drivers seat for the very first time, you might begin to feel overwhelmed with all the rules that you have to remember. Although remembering to use turn signals and what a particular road sign means are both very important, even more important is your ability to concentrate on the task at hand. Try to clear your mind and focus on what you are doing.

  • 3

Calm your nerves. It is always best to have a trusted and experienced driver in the passenger seat next to you when you drive a car for the first time. There is a reason that a learning period during which you are only able to drive with another adult in the vehicle is usually required before you are issued a drivers license. Having a trusted parent or other adult there to help you and give you advice will make driving a vehicle for the first time a little less scary.

Even if your parent isn’t a driving expert, their support will help you feel more comfortable and enjoy the ride

  • How Many Gears Do Manual Cars Have

Years ago, was normal for manual cars to have just four gears.

In theory, this would make them easier to drive than the cars of today, but back then youd also have to learn old-fashioned techniques such as double declutching as they didnt have synchromesh gearboxes.

Gearboxes were also much vaguer than today, making it more difficult to find gears.

Today, most cars have at least five gears, although six gears are becoming increasingly common.

Seven-speed manual gearboxes are rare but they do exist you can get one in supercars such as the Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette.

How Do I Start A Manual Car

  • To start the engine, you must be in neutral gear. This is the horizontal bar of the “H” that’s between all the gears. Wiggle the gear shift back and forth to be sure you are in neutral.
  • Make sure the emergency, or parking, brake is on.
  • Note that some cars will not start in neutral unless the clutch is pressed in all the way.
  • Turn your key in the ignition.
  • You’ve started the car!

What Are The Advantages Of Manual Gearboxes

Whether you prefer manual or automatic gearboxes will come down to personal preference, but there are some clear advantages to driving a manual.

For a start, theyre generally cheaper to buy and better on fuel than automatics.

There are a number of reasons for this automatic gearboxes are usually heavier than manuals, and traditional torque-converter auto boxes would waste energy building the resistance of hydraulic fluid to transfer drive from the engine to the wheels.

Manual gearboxes are generally better for those who like to feel in control, too.

If youre planning an overtake, for example, in a manual you can drop down a gear in advance for a quick reaction when you need the acceleration.

In an automatic, there might be slight hesitation when you floor the accelerator.

Today, many automatics come with manual or sport modes for this situation, however.

The same applies in poor conditions such as driving across a muddy field or in the snow.

An automatic gearbox might get confused and select the wrong gear, spinning the wheels or struggling to maintain momentum.

In a manual, you can select a higher gear to increase torque, or slow down using the gears rather than the brakes, helping the driver remain in control.

    Driving On The Highway

How To Drive A Manual Car For Beginners / Easy Way To Learn!

Driving on a multi-lane highway for the first time can be scary. Start your teen out by driving at quieter times of the day to practice merging into traffic, staying in the lane and using higher speeds and safe following distances without the added stress of rush-hour traffic. Once you are both comfortable with that, gradually move on to busier traffic situations.

Before heading out onto the highway, prepare your new driver for:

    • Higher speeds that call for longer stopping distances
    • The need to check blind spots before changing lanes
    • Driving near large trucks
    • Anticipating interchanges by reading signs
    • Allowing a “safety space” around you, in the event you need to pull off the road for another vehicle or debris
    • Looking for traffic stopped or slowing ahead

Dry Your Brakes After Driving Through A Puddle

Before even the smallest of puddles, you’d better slow down and go through it smoothly without maneuvering or changing speed. If you drive quickly, there is a chance of water getting into the ignition system and making the engine stall. Besides, aquaplaning might start that’s when a car loses traction, and you lose control of it.

After passing a big puddle, don’t cut your engine, and don’t change your speed. Dry the brakes first: pressing the gas pedal, press the brake pedal a few times. Friction causes heat, so water evaporates from the brake pads.

    Riding The Clutchdon’t Simply Don’t

Everything there is to know about learning to drive

Now, if you ride the clutch, those two plates never come together in contact fully and you get friction and you wear out your clutch.

And that’s why clutches have to be replaced.

Now, the bigger the vehicle, the more important it is, when you shift gears, get your foot off the clutch as quickly as possible.

Come through the friction point, that zone where it’s engaging and moving forward.

Get your foot off the clutch as quickly as possible.

Now, we’ll go over that more.

Today, this is about finding the friction point and controlling the clutch and not stalling the vehicle.

So the first exercise that we’re going to do, we’re not even going to move the vehicle.

I’m going to show you how to find the friction point with the parking brake on and not moving the vehicle.

So that’s what we’re going to do first.

And I’ll put a camera up here for you for the pedals as well so you can see what my foot is doing.

    Stage : The Basic Skills

In this stage, the teen driver needs to learn how to maneuver the vehicle and make it do what the driver wants. Most of these skills can be learned in an empty parking lot. At the end of this stage, your teen should be able to:

    • Back the car safely and straight
    • Make safe turns, both left and right, including signaling
    • Shift gears if using a manual transmission
    • Show awareness of his or her surroundings
    • Stop the car smoothly

    How To Reverse A Car

Many new car drivers find it tough to reverse a car, especially when it is parked in a tight spot. While reversing a car might seem tough in the beginning, its pretty easy once you keep the following things in your mind

    • Slot the gearlever into reverse
    • Look over both your shoulders to ensure there is no one in your path while reversing.
    • Gently, start driving backwards. To reverse slowly, you can even forget about putting your foot on the accelerator as the can move as you start releasing the clutch and lift off the brake pedal.
    • Its important to note that the steering wheel is reversed in when you need to reverse. When driving forward, you turn your steering right to turn right and turn the steering left to turn left. But when you reverse, its not the same. Turning your steering right will move your car back towards left while turning your steering left will turn your car towards right.
    • Of course, you need to use the brake pedal to slow down
