How Do I Unfreeze A Car Lock

Doing This Will Open Any Car Door

If the reason you cannot open your car door is because the lock has frozen and you cant get the key in, you could try the following techniques on your ice-locked car.

  • Option 1:

Heat the key. You can do this using boiling water, or a naked flame, for example from a cigarette lighter. Make sure to wear thick gloves to protect your hands from burns whilst doing this. You should only try this if there are no electrical components in your key which could be damaged so usually if you have an older car.

  • Option 2:

Spray deicer onto the key, into the lock, or both. The best way to spray it into the lock is through a straw, as this will ensure it gets as far in as possible. Again, if you dont have any deicer, rubbing alcohol can also be used as a one-off alternative.

  • Option 3:

If your car is parked close to a source of mains power, you also could try pointing a hairdryer at the lock, to melt the ice. To speed up the process, use a roll of paper or cardboard to better direct the hot air.

Gain Entry Through The Trunk

With manual locks, there is a chance that the trunk is unlocked even if the doors are locked. If this is the case, then it may be possible to get into the vehicle through the trunk.

Heres how you can unlock the vehicle through the trunk:

Step 1: Open up the trunk. Look for any opening that you can use to get into the interior of the car.

  • Tip: Usually an opening like this is located in the center of the rear seats.

Step 2: Push the rear seats forward. Look for something to press or pull on that would allow you to lower the rear seats and push them forward. Many sedans have a cable that can be pulled on for just this purpose. Look all along the edge of the rear seats.

Step 3: Get into the car. Crawl into the car and unlock the doors manually.

  • Tip: These techniques are certainly effective, but performing them in a parking lot, for example, may attract some suspicion. Always keep a cool head and have identification handy in case authorities show up.

If you use any of the above methods to open your car when you lock your keys inside, you won’t have to resort to breaking a window to get your keys back.If your cars trunk, door or power locking mechanism refuses to unlock/lock, get a certified mechanic, such as one from Your Mechanic, to inspect the locking mechanism.

Broken Lock Tail Piece

How To Open a Car Door Without a Key

Im not a locksmith so detailed knowledge of the internal workings of a car door lock is a bit beyond me. However, I know that worn lock tumblers will either prevent the lock from rotating or allow you to unlock the door with just about anything, including a screwdriver. If the lock is turning but the door is not unlocking, this is most likely caused by the broken tailpiece.

When you turn the key, youre mechanically moving a lever situated at the back of the lock. Through a series of push-pull connections, the lock will open the latch located between the door and the B-column. If one of the components on the way to the door latch fails, you might notice that its easier to turn the key than it used to be, and of course, the door wont unlock.

Fixing the tailpiece is really a job for a locksmith because it involves stripping the door panel. This is one of the most complicated tasks to get right, especially when the window controls and speakers are mounted on the door. Ive probably experienced a dozen of door-related failures, whether its the handle, lock, or tailpiece, and Ive left the majority for a specialist.

How Do You Unlock A Car With A Wedge

To unlock a car without keys like a pro, invest in an automotive toolkit with a curved or inflatable window wedge. Just be aware that using a wedge to unlock a car can be a little tricky, warns Bill Evans, manager of J& E Auto Body in Clark, New Jersey. Start by pulling the top of the door frame out with a pry tool and pushing the wedge in to hold the door frame out. Then, using a long, skinny rod , push the unlock button. Triple A drivers and tow truck drivers usually do it this way, and that is how we do it also, says Evans. This trick works on both old and new car models.

But there is a downside. Even the experienced people will scratch the paint or tear the weather stripping during this process, Evans says. You may need to see a body shop to realign the top of the door frame since sometimes they remain bent out away from the body after the wedge is used. Make sure the repair costs are worth it before using a wedge to get yourself out of your locked keys in car debacle.

There are a number of remedies for this problem, with some more effective than others. This article will go over a few methods that really work.

How Do I Open A Car Door Thats Frozen Shut

If you can unlock your car, but the door itself is frozen shut around the seal, or the handle is frozen to the point you cant lift it, there are several options available to you.

  • Option 1:

If your car door is frozen shut and youre not in a desperate hurry to get it open , the first option you could try, and the one which requires the least effort on your part, is starting the car remotely. This obviously depends on you having a car with remote starting abilities. You can then allow the heat from inside the car to gently thaw the ice around the door. This will likely take 10 20 minutes, depending on how thick the ice is, and is not the quickest option but it is by far the easiest.

  • Option 2:

Failing this, if you dont have a remote starting car, or if you cant wait 20 minutes to start driving, the next thing you can try is applying pressure to the door. If the door is frozen shut around the seal, or the handle is frozen, try leaning against or applying pressure to the door. If the layer of ice is only thin, this might cause the ice that is sealing the door closed to break enough for you to be able to open it.

  • Option 3:
  • Option 4:
  • Option 5:

If you dont have any deicer to hand you could try using rubbing alcohol as a homemade alternative with a similar effect. However, this should not be a regular solution, as alcohol can damage the rubber of your doors seal in the long term.

Pour Warm Water On Frozen Areas

Materials Needed

  • Bucket
  • Warm water

If the push and pull method fails, that means that the door is really and truly frozen shut. To deal with this, there are a number of techniques that can be used. They are all effective, but the right method should be decided by what you have at your disposal and how frozen the door is. Here are some techniques for removing ice from a frozen door:

Step 1: Get a bucket of hot water. Common sense indicates that warm water is good at melting ice. Luckily, warm water is usually pretty decent at melting ice.

Grab a container and fill it with a warm or hot water source. You can retrieve some hot water from a faucet or bathtub, or even warm some water on a stove.

Step 2: Pour warm water onto the ice in the door. Pour warm water in a steady stream onto the ice that is jamming the door shut.

If the lock is frozen, then insert a key soon after melting off the ice, as the cold metal and air can freeze the formerly-warm water right back over the small opening for the lock.

Step 3: Push and pull on the door until it opens. Once the ice has been decreased a noticeable amount, try to work the door loose by pushing and pulling on the door until it opens.
