Its called the Baader-Meinhoff phenomenon, or frequency illusion, a form of cognitive bias that makes you notice something more often once you become aware of it. Every days a school day.

On that note, what have I learned about the Kia Stinger GT over the past four months? Well, everything, really, and I will do my best to summarise those findings for you here! A simple pros and cons list is probably the easiest way to do so and lets start with the good stuff.

The heart of the Stinger GT is the engine. You can buy a Stinger with a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, but for me the powerful 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 is just such an inherent part of the cars appeal.

Figures of 274kW and 510Nm might not rock the socks as they once did but the powerband is just ridiculous peak torque from 1300rpm, peak power at 6500rpm so the Kia always feels plenty brisk, especially given it wears just 255mm-wide rear tyres. Sticking with the drivetrain, the eight-speed auto now has a proper manual mode which is a big plus and the limited-slip diff improves traction and the handling predictability.

The 2022 Kia Stinger Specs And Horsepower

It’s time to look at those 2022 Kia Stinger specs and horsepower figures. As we mentioned, thrills are a Stinger specialty across the board, and two available engines back that fact up. So do plentiful performance-enhancing features, but more on that in a bit.

First up for your choice of engine is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Found in the GT Line trim, this engine lays down 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque for already competitive performance and that’s just the low end. Find a venerable layout for fun with rear-wheel drive coming standard, or enhance the precision with available all-wheel drive . Either way, an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters comes with and lets the 2022 Kia Stinger GT Line 0-60 mph run happen in 5.2 seconds.

UPDATE 3/16/21:Kia has released U.S. images of the 2022 Stinger. The images show a GT-Line model in its new green color and a GT in red. The updated car will go on sale in the U.S. in the spring, and a special-edition Scorpion model will arrive later this year as well.

Interior Comfort And Cargo

The Stinger’s interior is well designed and attractive, but it can’t quite match the Audi A4 or the BMW 3-series for material quality or construction. Then again, the Kia costs considerably less than those two German sedans. The Stinger does, however, offer a significantly more comfortable rear seat than many cars in this classand its advantage feels greater than its numbers would suggest. While the Stinger’s interior is free of glaring errors and omissions, the overall effect is less polished than the efforts we’ve enjoyed from established luxury brands. The Stinger’s stated trunk volume would predict that it has by far the most cargo space in this set, but it only bested its rivals by a small margin in our real-world cargo tests. With its wide hatchback opening and long wheelbase, we’d hoped the Stinger would do even better in these measurements. Its center console is on the large side for a car, which helps to compensate for the fact that the front-door pockets are the smallest of this bunch.

Us Seeks Stinger Manpads Replacement

The US Army is seeking a replacement for its Raytheon FIM-92 Stinger short-range air-defence surface-to-air missile system, with a request for information issued to interested parties on 10 November.

Having entered service with the US Army in 1981, the Stinger MANPADS is now being slated for retirement. An award for up to 8,000 new systems is expected no later than FY 2026.

The man-portable air defence system RFI seeks to meet increasing demand to counter the growing aerial threat capabilities with a new SAM system to replace the Stinger that has been in the US Army inventory since the early 1980s.

The Stinger Reprogrammable Microprocessor will become obsolete in fiscal year 2023, and Stinger Block I is undergoing a service life extension to extend its end of useful life. The current Stinger inventory is in decline, the army said. The Army is conducting a SHORAD study which will inform efforts to modernise and to address emerging threats, which may increase the demand for MANPADS capable missiles.

According to the RFI, the US Army is currently planning to award a full and open competitive contract no later than FY 2026 for the production of up to 8,000 MANPADS missiles to fill this need.

Interior Design And Technology

The Kia Stinger is a family-sized five-door hatchback/saloon with a coupe-style fastback roofline, and plenty of aggressive design details intended to convey its sporty nature.

Its fair to say in fact, that the styling is a little more extrovert than some of its European rivals. The front end is characterised by the Kia family Tiger Grille flanked by swoopy wraparound headlamps and aggressively sculpted air intakes for radiator and brake cooling. The body flanks are also heavily chiselled with brake ducts on the front arches and sill extensions adding to the visual drama, while muscular haunches and that swooping roofline define the rear view. Its not just the top-spec GT-S that gets all the benefit either, as even the 2.2 diesel and 2.0 petrol models share the same dramatic body details.

The interior is attractive and reasonably well finished. But while it may be a little derivative, it does the job with a reasonably premium and high-quality feel. That said, the interior design doesnt have the cohesion of an Audi or BMW, and the quality of materials used in some areas of the interior isnt quite up to the level of its premium-badged rivals either.

Other Features Of The 2018 Kia Stinger

And the flipside of handling? Both cars ride comfortably enough to use as daily drivers, even in the Detroit area. Both of the tested cars were fitted with adaptive dampers. These are included with the V6 on the Kia, but are part of a $2,500 Sport Package on the Audi. I actually preferred the Kia’s ride with its dampers set to “sport.” In “comfort” they permit too much bobble and float . In any mode the Audi’s ride can feel more nervous than the Kia’s across small, nearly invisible road surface imperfections, and in general it rides a little more firmly.

Noise levels? The Stinger has laminated front side windows, and these might help keep more wind noise out of the Kia’s cabin. But the Audi suppresses road noise better, especially on a concrete highway. This road noise differs more qualitatively than quantitatively. Relatively high-pitched in the Stinger, it’s reduced to a low hum in the S5.

Absolutely. There’s very little, if anything, not to love about this sports car. It has received a fresh look for the new year, and its twin-turbocharged engine options make it crazy powerful. Essentially its a one-off track car created as a sort of after hours project between Kia UK and the brands Engineering Centre in Russelsheim, Germany. Using as its base the first pre-production Special-edition Stinger GT-S to arrive in the UK, the GT420 has been stripped of weight, given a power boost and had its suspension thoroughly overhauled.

The handsome Kia Stinger sports sedan made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier in the year. With its range-topping 370-horsepower engine and a handsome design, its easy to assume the car is bound for success. But Kia thinks its domestic market needs a bit of a boost.

At the Seoul Motor Show this past week, the Korean automaker debuted a Stinger with a special “E” badge affixed to the front and rear bumper. The badge is rumored to hint at an upcoming luxury sub-brand similar to Hyundais spin-off of Genesis or even could signify an electric sub-brand. The new emblem reportedly “symbolizes maximized performance driving with the engine arrangement of rear-wheel drive,” as translated from their website.

The “E” emblem will be limited to the Korean market exclusively, while the rest of the world will get the standard Kia badge. But not everyone is sold on the idea. In an interview with CarAdvice, Kia Chief Designer Gregory Guillaume had this to say:

“For us, it should be Kia all over the world. We believe that its more helpful for the brand to make all the cars as Kia We believe that Kia, as a brand, is elastic enough or flexible enough to be able to deliver a car like the Picanto, like the Stinger, like the Sorento, and its actually more beneficial for the brand itself.”
