The Most Reliable Cars Over 10 Years Old According To Our Experts
Because we work where we do, we’re often asked by friends, family, and newcomers to German cars , “What’s the most reliable used car for me to buy?” As enthusiasts, we tend to have our favorites when it comes to making these recommendations. While we may make a suggestion with an eye on whatever the person asking needs or wants, we probably have a few go-to favorites that are always in our top-5 recommendations whenever someone asks. Maybe it’s something sporty, maybe it’s something that can haul the family, or maybe it’s something to commute every day but still have fun on the weekends.
With this spirit in mind, we decided to pick the brains of the FCP Euro catalog managers to see what some of their personal favorites are for their respective brands. Price, purpose, and budget be damned, they could pick whatever they wanted, we only had two rules: Their choice had to be at least 10 years old, and it had to be reliable. While we weren’t expecting to get such a wide range of responses, this shows that there are plenty of great options when it comes to picking the most reliable used car.;

Technology Is A Painpoint
Automakers fared better in all eight categories, but the gain in infotainment and communication was only marginal and remains the area with the most problems.
A lot of the pain points are in the technology, the infotainment systems and the driver assistance systems, Sargent said. Consumers are finding them confusing or dont work as they would like. They are comparing their vehicle with their phone. Everything works fine on their phone, so why doesnt it work on the vehicle?;;
Recent model year vehicles rarely have a mechanical failure.;
Only very seldom does a vehicle leave you stuck by the side of the road and you need to call a tow truck, Sargent said. Things arent wearing out or falling off the vehicle.;;
Sedans proved to be the most reliable vehicles, averaging 111 problems. Trucks were the worst with 130 problems. SUVs came in between at 122.;
Sargent said automakers should get a better handle on truck and SUV reliability because they account for 80% of light vehicle retail sales.

The Used Cars That Are The Most Reliable And Cheapest To Repair
CarMD.com determined that the 2017 Honda CR-V required the fewest check engine light-related repairs … among all vehicles over a 12-month period.
Nearly 70 percent of U.S. consumers say theyll consider a used car, truck, or SUV as their next vehicle, according to study conducted by The Harris Poll for Ally Financial.;;For many cash-strapped buyers, there is no alternative, especially with Kelley Blue Book reporting that the average transaction price of a new vehicle now stands at a steep $38.393. Fortunately, with the market being flooded by a wave of late-model rides coming off lease, prices in the used-car market remain reasonable, and the selection is plentiful.
Unfortunately, even if a given model is covered by what remains of the original warranty, buying a used auto is fraught with peril. Its always prudent for a buyer to obtain a title report, examine the previous owners service records, and have a car under consideration examined by a mechanic before signing a bill of sale, but theres still no telling what the future may bring in terms of needed repairs. And as most motorists have figured out, some models are more or less inherently prone to suffer mechanical issues, and are more or less costly to fix.
Here are the 10 most reliable used vehicles that required the fewest check engine light-related trips to the repair shop, auto-parts store, or a new-car dealers service department over a 12-month period:
The Chevy Impala Was The Most Reliable American Car
Chevrolet May 12, 2016
As the iSeeCars study showed, the Chevy Impala took first place in terms of its reliability rating for American sedans. iSeeCars says that 1.7% of all the Impalas that were on the market had over 200,000 miles on their odometers. While 1.7% may seem like a small number, iSeeCars mentions that the Impalas 1.7% is three times higher than the average score for the average sedan.
iSeeCars also mentions that other car review sites, such as Consumer Reports, have also praised the Impalas reliability. It makes a lot of sense that the Impala is so reliable, as Chevy uses the Impala for NASCAR and a reliable car is very necessary for such an extreme and demanding sport.;
While the Impala, which starts at about $31,600, is a great reliable car, it isnt doing too well in terms of sales, according to iSeeCars. iSeeCars says that the Impalas execution is coming soon, likely due to the decline of sedan sales in general in the U.S. compared to truck and SUV sales.

Asian Brands Top Multiple Studies
J.D. Powers finding that Asian brands fared better than others mirrored some of the results from the Consumer Reports annual study of vehicle reliability that also came out Thursday.;
Consumer Reports also highlighted the models it likes best, organized by price segments. Eight of the magazines top 10 picks are Japanese nameplates, including four from Toyota and its Lexus luxury brand. Subaru had two models. Tesla was the only domestic automaker with a top pick.;;;
J.D. Power also published a list of top picks over multiple vehicle segments. Toyota Motor Corp. won five segment awards for the Lexus ES and Toyota Avalon sedans, Toyota Sienna minivan, Toyota Tundra pickup and Lexus GX SUV. Lexus is Toyotas luxury brand.;
Tesla appeared in the J.D. Power results for the first time, logging 176 problems per 100 vehicles. But the market research firm said thats based only on partial data. It could not officially rank Tesla among other brands because the electric vehicle manufacturer doesnt grant J.D. Power permission to survey its owners in 15 states where its required, including large Tesla markets such as California. Teslas score was calculated based on a sample of surveys from owners in the other 35 states.
