How Long Will It Take To Replace A Wing Mirror

If your wing mirror is destroyed or broken, you will need to get a new wing mirror. You could order the part yourself but you will be taking a huge risk as you are likely to get the wrong part and many garages will refuse to fit the wing mirror all together.

The majority of time taken to fit a brand new wing mirror will be taken up by the delivery as putting the wing mirror onto a car should not take long at all.

Find The Right Replacement Part

Finding the right replacement part is key if youre going to fix a car side mirror on your own. And honestly, this was probably the most intimidating part for me. I started out by going to Auto Zones website where they have this handy feature where you can enter in your cars information to make sure the part you order is correct, then my plan was to jump on Amazon to actually grab the part. I was SO pleased to see that Amazon actually has this same feature! How handy is that? So you just go to the car section of Amazon and find your part. Super easy! I grabbed this using one of my gift cards from writing a Capterra review. Im telling you I live off of Amazon.

Depending on the complexity of the repair process, it can take one to two hours for an experienced technician to replace the mirror. Sometimes the interior door panel has to be removed, and sometimes it does not. This causes a little variation in repair time. Also, keep in mind that most dealers mark up the prices of their parts.

The average body shop/dealership labor charge is about $100/hour. The average parts markup is about 30%. Using those figures, youll be able to calculate the approximate cost to have a body shop or dealer replace your side mirror with this formula:

IS GAP INSURANCE WORTH IT?

Gap insurance can prevent you from making payments on an already-totalled car, but is gap insurance worth it? We break down what gap insurance is, if its worth it, and more – simply and with plenty of examples.

When The Damage Is Someone Else’s Fault

If the damage was someone else’s fault, you might be in luck. You can try filing a claim against the other driver’s insurance policy, get an estimate for the repair, and have the repair completed. Ideally, the other driver’s insurer will cut you a check to cover the repair costs.

If you have collision coverage, you can file a claim with your own insurance company as you work out the details with the other drivers insurance company. You will likely be able to get at least some of the cash needed for the repair more quickly, and your insurance company will take care of getting reimbursed. Keep in mind that filing such a claim may result in increased insurance rates.

The scenario gets complicated if the damage was caused by a hit-and-run driver. You can file a claim with your own insurance company if you have uninsured motorist coverage, but if you do not, you will have to pay for the repair yourself. It is especially important to file a police report on a hit-and-run incident. Some insurance companies require one in order to have your claim considered as a chargeable loss.

When The Damage Is Caused By A Thief A Vandal Or God

If none of the above scenarios applies, you are probably the victim of theft, vandalism, or what the insurance companies call an “act of God,” which is an event that is beyond the capabilities of mere mortals, such as a hurricane or a lightning strike. Insurance companies created comprehensive coverage for such events that are outside of your control.

If you have comprehensive coverage, and your mirror is broken by a vandal or by the wrath of nature, you can usually file a claim with your insurance company. You will, however, need to check your policy. Comprehensive insurance sometimes omits damage from specific natural disasters in areas that are prone to them. And you should not forget about the deductible. You will need to pay up to the deductible amount before the insurance can kick in.

Look I Just Need An Estimate

The first problem was although I said I needed to come in for an estimate to get the mirror fixed, that didnt make it to the notes. The service guy thought I was there for service. Nope, only and estimate. Nope, not an oil change. Nope, no service.

It was all the more confusing for the guy because my toddler was asleep in the car. After several minutes of trying to explain it, he finally got it. Nothing to do today. Only and estimate and come back later. Yes, Id like the recall work done too, just not now.

Overnight You Didnt Say Overnight

Drive to the dealer this morning, realizing that they didnt call to confirm the parts arrived on Friday, which made me tad worried given the estimate experience. Hoping for the best I soldiered on.

Check in was efficient. Everything was good until the service guy said that if they needed the extra parts Id have to leave the car with them overnight.

Hold on. You said if I had to leave it with you it would be done that afternoon. I didnt plan for a possible car sleepover.

The guy pointed out that he couldnt get the part that fast and fix it. Sure that made sense, and I was wondering what kind of amazing network they had to get same-day parts, but you told me same day. I guess something got lost in translation.

This leaves me worrying and trying to figure out what I could do if I had to leave the car with them. Strike two.

In the end, the extra parts werent needed. The mirror is fixed and works .

And in the bonus points column, they dealt with one of the two recall problems while I was there and I didnt have to ask for it. Cool.

But how could this have been better?

Order A Replacement Side View Mirror

Family Handyman

Start your repair job by searching the Internet for an aftermarket side view mirror and for the factory paint color code. Most mirrors are available from online sources for a fraction of the dealer price. Because replacement body parts have to be painted to match your car, we located the factory paint color code and then visited an auto parts store and purchased cans of aerosol touch-up paint and primer.

Painting the side view mirror was easy. We simply masked off the glass and followed the spraying instructions on the paint cans. But if youre not up to painting it yourself, take it to a body shop.

How to Properly Set Your Side Mirrors

I figured the dealer would need to order parts. Its not like theyd keep a bunch of side mirrors in stock . To fix the problem they only need two parts. Cool. But

But the mechanic said that sometimes these other two parts sometimes break when they are fixing it. Fine, order those too.

I cant. My manager wont let me. He doesnt want to spend the money. If the parts break then they can be ordered. Not before, just in case.

    Hmm.

I get you need to keep costs down. I understand it might be a hassle to return parts, but your supply chain issues arent my problem. Your job is to make me a happy customer and come back. This makes me think you value your convenience over mine.

    Not good enough. Strike one.

The guy told me I could bring the car in first thing Monday morning. If they didnt break anything in the repair, it should be only an hour. But if they need to order the extra parts, Id have to leave the car with them, but theyd order the parts and finish that day.

At least thats what I was told.

Important Reasons To Fix Your Car Mirror Today

Are you someone that lets the gas gauge get to empty, or uses duct tape to fix car parts? If so, you may be thinking that a broken car mirror is no big deal.

Thats where youre wrong. Replacing your car mirror may seem like a hassle, but it could mean the difference between life and death. Your car mirrors allow you to see the cars around you and to drive safely.

Keep reading to find out exactly why car mirror replacement is so important for your safety and the safety of your passengers.

    1. You Become a Risk to Yourself and Others

Driving without a mirror is like driving with a huge blind spot. Safe driving depends on the driver using their mirrors to see other cars, bikes, or pedestrians nearby. Without a properly functioning mirror, you could risk being in a car accident and endangering yourself or others.

Whether its a driver side mirror replacement or side view mirror replacement, it will cost you much less to repair a mirror than to fix your vehicle if its in an accident. Not to mention, you wont be risking your own safety and the safety of others.

    2. Its Illegal to Drive Without It

In all states, it is illegal to drive without a functioning car mirror. This law is intended to protect drivers and passengers. On a federal level, the law applies more broadly to car manufacturers. But each state has its own driving laws.

So while it is dangerous to drive without functioning mirrors, you could also get a ticket for not getting your mirrors fixed or replaced.

Why Are Wing Mirrors So Expensive To Replace

Your typical wing mirror on a new car has the ability to automatically fold-in, along with heating up when its icy, electrically adjust for perfect vision angle, and of course, indicate to other motorists your intended direction of travel.

More recently, some car makers are using the wing mirror as part of their blind spot monitoring systems, which adds further cost and complexity. Long gone are the days of fixed mirrors using a single piece of glass.
