Where To Buy Freon For Car

Don't Miss

What Happens With A Vehicle A/c Recharge

Don’t Buy Cars that Use this New Type of Refrigerant in the AC System

Along with adding more freon, your system will most likely need an A/C recharge. When you bring it to the experts at Militos Auto Repair in Chicago, the technician will check your system pressures with gauges, and then look for possible leaks. Once a leak is found, the technician will have to evacuate the system and repair the leak before refilling it with fresh refrigerant.

However, an additional step may be needed if the system has been opened, or any components are changed. In that case, they will remove the system of all atmospheric air and moisture with a vacuum before charging it. While adding a can of refrigerant can be done quickly, this additional step can take a couple of hours.

How To Prepare To Add Freon To My Car

The first thing that you need to do is gather all of your equipment into one place. Once you have done this, you should attach the refrigerant dispenser to the can containing freon.

To do this, simply insert the can into the base of the dispenser and screw to secure in place. It is vital that this is properly attached as the freon is pressurized. Doing this step incorrectly could result in injury to you or others around you.

Your next step is to check that the refrigerant is the root cause of the problem. To do this, you should run the engine of your car and activate the air conditioning. Set the power to the maximum setting and look for the compressor. This is connected to the engine of your car on the low side fill port with a hose.

Follow the hose until you find a pulley somewhere on the compressor. Look in the center to see if there is a spinning section. If there is, the compressor is working correctly.

If it is not spinning, you need to add about half of the contents of the freon can to the air conditioning unit. If this does not fix the issue, you must take the car to a mechanic as the issue is more complex than you can solve alone.

Loss Of Cooling Ability

If you notice your air conditioning system functioning at a lesser quality than you are accustomed to, this could be a sign that the system needs to be recharged.

The air conditioning unit works by circulating pressurized refrigerant, such as freon. When the levels of refrigerant are too reduced, the air conditioning system will not function correctly. This may present as the air not blowing out at all, or the system blowing out warm air.

Why You Should Leave It To The Professionals

There are various types of at-home A/C recharge kits on the market. However, adding new refrigerant without evacuating the old, potentially contaminated refrigerant won’t ensure that you are getting the best performance from your vehicle’s A/C system. Just topping off the refrigerant may or may not bring the cold air conditioning back and if it does bring the cold air back, the question will be for how long because the leak was never fixed. Without diagnosing the root cause of the problem, any benefit will be short term at best. Further, be aware that adding too much refrigerant can reduce the system’s cooling ability and potentially cause the whole system to shut off.

Determine Ambient Air Temperature

How to Add Freon to a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 3800

If the temperature of the air is 55°F or below, do not charge the vehicle. It is also always recommended to use acharging hose with a gauge. The refrigerant packaging should contain a chart like the one below for determining what pressure to charge the system depending on the ambient air temperature. If no chart is provided, use the A/C pressure chart below this list as a general guide. Also, different AC systems can have different recommended pressures, so its worth taking a look in a repair manual or online to determine the right pressure for your vehicle. Following these guidelines when recharging the system will ensure the system can operate efficiently. It is important to note, charging an AC system with just a single gauge attached to the refrigerant is possible, but it is always recommended to use a complete set of manifold gauges, which monitor both the high and low side pressures. These gauges are available for sale, and for rent at most AutoZone stores. At this point, start the vehicle and set the air conditioning to MAX setting. Locate the vehicles AC compressor for reference, and its important to monitor what the AC clutch is doing. When the AC compressor is disengaged, only the outside of the pulley will turn. When its engaged, the entire clutch assembly will turn, driving the compressor. Your compressor is designed to not engage at all when refrigerant pressures, or volume is too low.

Attach Can Of Refrigerant

Screw the dispenser hose and gauge onto the can of refrigerant. Attach to the low side port by pulling back the outer slip ring, pushing it on and releasing the ring. Next, start the engine, turn the A/C system on max and check the gauge reading. The compressor clutch should be engaged and the front of the compressor spinning. If the pressure is lower than 20 psi and the compressor is not engaged, then dispense refrigerant until the clutch engages. Be sure to shake the can first and every 3-4 seconds later.

Types Of Car Ac Refrigerants

The difference in refrigerants is all down to how old your car is. There are two types of refrigerants used: R12 and R134a. R12 is known as the old-fashioned refrigerant and was used in cars pre-1944. As you can imagine, this Freon had a major role in damaging the ozone layer. Its no longer available for casual purchase, no longer manufactured in North America and will have to be fitted by a professional. Likewise, the price of R22 has absolutely skyrocketed and this refrigerant wont be accessible for use at all by 2020.

If your vehicle was manufactured after 1995, like most cars it will require an R134a refrigerant, which is a less harmful alternative to the R12 systems. These systems dont leak nearly as much as the dinosaur systems and are a lot better for our planet.

NEVER mix different types of refrigerants together. Youd think this would be common sense but theres always somebody who doesnt see the problem with this! By doing this, youre pretty much asking for a fire in your vehicle.

It’s All About The Pressure

Air conditioning systems leverage high-and-low pressure. Before the Freon is converted into a liquid in the high side, it starts out as a gas in the low pressure side of the system. The vehicle is kept cool by the constant circulation of refrigerant through the high and low pressure sides of the system.

Where Can I Buy Freon

First and foremost let me state right now that the word Freon is not a generic name for all refrigerants on the market today. In fact Freon refers to a specific type of refrigerant and is a specific brand of refrigerant. Confused? Well let me explain it this way. Using the name Freon to refer to all refrigerants is like using the term Accord to refer to all cars. Obviously, there is a large difference between a Camry, Accord, and a Fusion. They are all different cars and all have different capabilities. It is important to realize that the same applies when it comes to refrigerants.

The term Freon is a registered brand name by the DuPont company and the Chemours company. The name was trademarked all the way back in the 1930s when the first mainstream CFC refrigerant was invented. This refrigerant known as R-12 was the first Freon refrigerant. That is also why the name stuck. It was the first major refrigerant used widely across the world. Because of this everyone referred to it as its brand name of Freon. Not much later another refrigerant was developed by DuPont known as R-22. The R-12 and R-22 refrigerants in tandem are responsible for the revolution of the refrigerant industry and were used in nearly every automobile and home air-conditioner for decades and decades.

How Your Vehicles Air Conditioning Works

Just like the air conditioning in your home uses freon to cool air, so does your automotive A/C system. The compressor pressurizes the freon, turning it from a gas into a liquid. Its this change in pressure that allows the system to create cool air thats circulated throughout the vehicles cabin.

A/C systems operate using two different sides the high side and the low side. Before the refrigerant is converted into a liquid in the high side, it starts out as a gas in the low pressure side of the system. The vehicle is kept cool by the constant circulation of refrigerant through the high and low pressure sides of the system.

However, sometimes these pressurized systems develop leaks, and once the refrigerant and pressure level of an A/C system drops too low, it has to be recharged with pressurized refrigerant before it will function properly.

Types Of Car And Truck Air Conditioning Refrigerant

There are different types of refrigerants used, such as R-134a, which is used on newer cars, and R-12, which was used in the 80s and 90s.

If your car or truck was made after 1994, then it likely uses R134a.

Before 1994 R-12 was the main refrigerant used in cars and trucks.

If your car uses R-12, it can no longer be bought, and it is likely time to upgrade the vehicles AC system.

Most shops recommend upgrading an R-12 system to the new R-134a, which can be a costly upgrade.

To find out the type of refrigerant your car uses, look under the hood for a label or simply Google your make and model for the Refrigerant type used.

What Type Of Refrigerant Does My Car Need

Getting into your car on a hot Summer Day can really make you appreciate having a functional A/C system. Dont wait until the weather is too hot to even drive with the windows down. Check your A/C system now and make sure you have enough cold air to punch through the heat and stay comfortable all summer long.

The first thing you need to know before recharging your automotive AC system is the type of refrigerant that your system needs. Older refrigerants have been phased out due to their environmental impact and replaced by cleaner options. The most common refrigerant is R-134A however newer vehicles may use R-1234YF . Even still, some very old vehicles may also be using R-12 .

The easiest way to know is to check your vehicles A/C system nameplate under the hood. We have provided a picture with an example for easy reference. If for some reason you cannot find the nameplate, you can also call your brands dealership and ask them to look it up for you. For older vehicles though, you might need to check yourself due to systems being retrofitted to newer gas types. Below we will help explain this to you.
