How To Diagnose Blend Door Actuators

car ac not blowing cold air

Blend door actuators are the most common reason for the car air conditioning to blow cold air on one side and hot air on the other. They can be diagnosed with an advanced scan tool. The scan tool can tell if the blend door actuator should be in a different position than commanded. If it does not move with the adjustments and commands, there is a problem with the blend door actuator and it will need to be replaced. If the actuator is clicking, this is another sign it will probably need to be replaced.

The Most Common Causes Of A Car Ac Not Blowing Air From The Vents

One of the tough parts about dealing with a car AC not blowing air from the vents is that its not usually all that easy to diagnose whats going on with it thats leading to it not blowing air. There are a number of different things that could be causing it to happen. Your No. 1 goal is going to be trying to find out why you arent feeling any air coming out of your cars vents when you have the AC running. Here are some of the most common causes of a car AC not blowing air from vents.

The Ac Cooling Process:

  • The process starts with the compressor compressing the refrigerant and converts it from gas to a liquid state. This increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant.
  • The hot, pressured refrigerant then travels from the compressor to the condenser and circulates in the accurate tubes of the condenser. This allows the refrigerant to cool down since the cooling fans blow cool air into the condenser. This cools down the refrigerant in the tubes of the condenser.
  • The cool but high pressured refrigerant then travels from the condenser to the receiver /drier. The receiver dries the refrigerant by removing any form of moisture. This makes the refrigerant cooler.
  • The cool, high pressured refrigerant flows into the expansion valve to reduce the pressure level while keeping it cooler. This enables the refrigerant to flow smoothly into the evaporator. By now we have cool, dry, and low-pressure refrigerant ready to do its job.
  • This cool, low-pressure liquid flows into the evaporator, and at the same time, the hot air from the cabin blows into the evaporator core . Another heated exchange happens in this step. The refrigerant in the evaporator pipes exchanges heats with the air from outside. After that, the fans take the cool air and blow it into the air vents in the cabin.
  • The hot, low-pressure refrigerant then goes back to the compressor to start another cycle.

Run It At Least Once A Week

Possibly the easiest step to do in this list. Your carâs AC is designed to function for long intervals. But, if it is left without functioning for a while, it can develop failures. Just like every other function of our car, the air conditioning needs to run to ensure its long-term health.

So, even during a cold season, leave your AC on for at least 10 minutes a week. This will help in maintaining gas pressure inside the system and allow the compressor to work properly. Ensure that the AC is set to its lowest temperature and highest fan speed as this procedure is performed.

This can be inconvenient during the harshest of winters, but you can perform this when your car is parked as well. You need not be inside the car for the whole duration. Make sure that it is at a location that is safe to leave the car started. You can also work the AC out by using the defogger function regularly.

Ac Not Blowing Cold Air Due To Basic Electrical Issues

3 Reasons Why Your Car AC is Not Blowing Cold Air

Lets first cover the basics. All air conditioners require access to electricity to prevent them from blowing warm air. If the compressor is not getting adequate power, it would be able to compress the R410A or R22 refrigerant. The consequence will be no heat exchange and it will result in the air conditioner blowing same-temperature air.

First, check the cables. The power cable has to be correctly plugged into the outlet. Make sure youre using the correct voltage. Smaller AC units require 110/120V while bigger units will require 220/240V. Also check if any of the power cables have been damaged.

Who doesnt plug in their air conditioner?

Thats the common response. The reason for check the power cables is because air conditioners require a surge of power when starting and when the rotary compressor starts working at 100%.

Everybody has an air conditioner plugged in. However, when the surge comes, two things can happen:

  • A fuse is blown.
  • Amp breaker is tripped.
  • Its likely you wont notice either the blown fuse or 30A breaker tripped. What you are likely to notice is that your air conditioner was blowing cold air and all of a sudden the air conditioner stopped blowing cold air.

To fix basic electrical issues that might be causing the problem, check if the fuse is blown or if the amp breaker has been tripped.

If everything works OK, check the thermostat:

Proper Maintenance Prevents Ac Not Blowing Cold Air

As with any machine, your central air conditioning unit needs regular maintenance. Filters need to be changed and all other working components need to be examined by a professional.

The standard recommendation is to have an HVAC maintenance tune up twice a year. This should happen in the spring and the fall. The technician can check your HVAC system and make any tweaks or repairs necessary before the weather gets hot or cold.

This not only keeps your unit running efficiently, but it also helps reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns and expensive problems down the road.

How Often Should You Service Your Ac

You should have your vehicle AC serviced every 1-2 years.

If you have your AC serviced regularly, this may be why its not blowing cold air.

If an automotive technician or mechanic has been working on the engine and they dont wear a mask to protect themselves, then there is also a possibility of dirt entering the system which could cause problems with how well the A/C works.

If youre experiencing a problem with your AC, its important to find out whats going on before you make any repairs so that you dont end up spending money unnecessarily.

The first thing many people do when their air conditioning system stops blowing cold is checked the cabin filter for dirt and debris which could have been blocking the airflow from reaching the passenger compartment.

If it does need replacing, then change it again and test your cars AC again to see if there has been an improvement in performance.

    Issues With The Electric Connections

Another common cause for your AC blowing but not cold air is the internal connections or the electric fuses. Most of the AC components will lie on some electric supply, which means that if a fuse blows out, it can immediately interrupt the internal AC process and cause your car to blow warm air instead of cold air.

How much does it cost to fix an electric fuse?

If you were lucky enough, your AC problem would be related to a bad electric fuse. Typically, replacing the field should cost you anywhere between $5 and $60. However, replacing and fixing a fuse is not a complicated job, and many drivers do the job by themselves to eliminate labor costs.

Problems With A Stuck Blend Air Door

Another common problem for your vehicles AC blowing but not cold is a stuck blend air door. This blend air door is responsible for opening and closing the ventilation system to allow either the warm air or the cold air to get inside your vehicle, depending on your vehicle settings.

If you don’t already know, both warm air and cold air coming from the same location, and depending on the user’s input, you decide on which system to activate by turning on the heating system or the AC system. Then, inside your vehicle, the blend air door closes the openings of the warm air and allows the openings of the cold air to be active, so you pull down your vehicle.

Like any other internal components in your vehicle, the blend air door might get stuck at a certain location therefore, if you notice that your car is blowing air but warmer, it might be a problem related to a bad or stuck blend air door.

Luckily, replacing the blend air door doesn’t require installing new components, which means that you don’t have to worry about expensive parts. However, since the blend air door is located somewhere deep behind the dashboard, you’ll have to consult a mechanic to do the job for you, and it’s not something that you can do by yourself. Of course, if you have the right level of mechanical skill sets and the right tools, you might do the job yourself but note that automotive experts recommend not experiencing on your vehicle if you’re not ready.

Ac Blows Cold Air One Side And Hot Air On The Other

There are a few different reasons why the AC might not work in your car. If the air conditioning in your car is blowing hot air on one side and cold air on the other, there could be a simple fix like adjusting the temperature or it could be time to replace a part like the temperature blend door actuator.

How To Prevent Future A/c Problems

In some cases, A/C system-related failures are unavoidable. However, in other instances, such issues can be largely avoided with simple maintenance. This most notably includes having your vehicles A/C system serviced at factory specified intervals. For many makes and models, this service interval is generally around the 100,000-mile mark.

A basic A/C service typically involves ensuring that your system is filled to capacity with refrigerant and that no obvious leaks are found. A service technician will connect a set of gauges to your vehicles A/C charging ports, before reading the systems high and low pressures. This will provide the technician with information regarding the systems rate of charge.

If these pressures are lower than intended, the systems refrigerant will be topped off, or alternatively, evacuated and recharged. A technician will also seek out the source of any offending leaks with a UV light. Repairs can then be made as necessary.

A preventative A/C service, such as that described above, is quite valuable when intended to extend the service life of various components within your vehicles A/C system.

Services of this type prevent your vehicles A/C system from running low on refrigerant, which will cause a compressor to short cycle on an ongoing basis. This short cycling ultimately accelerates the wear of the A/C compressors internal components, as well as its magnetic clutch assembly.

Q: Is It Ok To Run The Cars Air Conditioner Without Freon

Without Freon you can run the cars air conditioner, and AC will still function. But without a Freon in the cars air conditioners, it can start serious damage that will eventually lead to an air compressors repair and even the full system could be broken down. A low level of Freon will also damage the whole air compressor and lead to overheating. The air conditioner is designed for a particular refrigerant charge. When refrigerant charge drops, this upsets the general operation of the Air conditioner. To avoid this problem, you should always check your car Freon level: save your money and car damage.

No : Theres A Problem With The Compressor

Why is my air conditioning systems not blowing cold air? (Ben)

Your air conditioning relies on a compressor to keep the air moving, but if the compressor isnt working properly, that refrigerant isnt going to move around. One of the main reasons a compressor goes bad is from not being used for long periods of time, and the long cool seasons of fall and winter means that many Ohioans dont run their air conditioning for several months.

A compressor can also have problems if the clutch on the compressor gets stuck. If it gets stuck in the on position it will make your air conditioning run continuously, and if its stuck in the off position it will keep the compressor from engaging. Youll need to have your mechanic look at what is causing the problem with your compressor.

Is It Worth Fixing My Car Ac Blowing But Not Cold

Why Is My Carâs Air Conditioning Not Blowing Cold Air?

It depends. It all depends on the total repair costs and how important the system is in your vehicle. In other words, if you live in colder areas, you might not need the AC system at all. Still, if you live in hot environments where the AC system is a major component of your daily life, then that’s where you must evaluate the situation and consider fixing it.

If you decided to explore whether it’s worth fixing an AC system or not, you would need to calculate the total repair cost. This cost must include fixing the AC system and fixing anything, even if that thing is minor, like replacing a windshield wiper once you have a total number for repair costs, compared to your vehicle’s overall value.

If you realize that repair costs are approaching 75% or more from your vehicle’s value, automotive experts never recommend fixing this car, and you’d better sell it and use the money towards a better vehicle.

Of course, dealing with major problems makes it hard to sell the vehicle to a private buyer here even if he thought about trading it in with the dealership, you wouldn’t get as much money as you are looking for.
