If you love shrimp, you need to know How to Peel and Devein Raw Shrimp. I have two quick methods for peeling and deveining shrimp.

I know, youre probably saying to yourself, just purchase them already peeled. And, youre right, but I feel like shrimp retain more flavor when they can be peeled last minute before being cooked.

You can also purchase smaller shrimp that dont need to be deveined. Small shrimp are more tender. However, sometimes you need a larger shrimp for example when grilling.

What If I Split My Time Between States

Can your car be registered in one state and insured in another if you split your time between states?

You may be a snowbird and spend your winters in one place and summers in another. You may commute between states for work. You may live in Kansas City.

In these cases, having your car registered in one state and insured in another may not be as much of an issue.

If you’re frequently driving in multiple states or have a vacation home you frequently visit, discuss the particulars with your insurer. The best thing you can do is accurately inform your car insurance agent of your situation and work out a personalized solution.

Failing to inform your auto insurance carrier of your multi-state status is a bad idea. It may save money in the short term, but when it comes time to file a claim, the truth will come out.

You dont want to pay into an insurance policy for years only to have your claim denied when you need it most.

If they can’t do so within that time, they can get a 60-day temporary permit, which allows them to operate a vehicle while collecting the documents. When applying for a license, drivers must submit one of the following documents as their primary identification:

    • U.S. birth certificate: Florida accepts only a county health department or CDC-issued birth certificates. It does not accept hospital-issued certificates.
    • U.S. passport or passport card: If the passport has the individual’s current name, they do not have to show additional name change documents.

    How Do You Devein Shrimp

There are two ways to devein shrimp. The most common method is to cut a slit down the back of the shrimp, which exposes the vein making it easy to remove. The problem with this method is that it splits open the shrimp, causing it to lose its shape and making it easier to dry out.

The best way to devein shrimp is to remove the vein with a toothpick. Once you get good at it, its much faster than the slitting method, and it leaves the shape of the shrimp intact. Heres how to do it:

First, you want to hold the shrimp, so the back-side is facing you with the tail on top.

Insert a toothpick about two-thirds of the way up the shrimp, just to the right of center.

Pry the tip of the toothpick towards the center. The goal is to catch the vein running down the middle with the tip of the toothpick.

Now you should be able to pull the vein up and out of the shrimp using the tip of the toothpick. You can use your fingers to pluck the vein out, and then deposit it on a paper towel.

If the shrimp is dirty, rinse it off under running water and repeat with the rest of the shrimp.

Timeframe To Register Your Vehicle In A New State

Do your NYS DMV Transaction Online

Your car should not be registered in one state and insured in another. Insuring your car in a state where you dont reside is fraud. Insurance fraud carries heavy penalties, the least of which is that your claims will be denied.

Your drivers license, registration, and car insurance need to match. In many states, you cant even register your car until youve provided proof of insurance.

Even states that allow you to register a car without proof of insurance require you to provide proof of insurance within a certain timeframe.

If you move to a different state, youre required to register your vehicle with that states Department of Motor Vehicles . The timeframe in which you must do so varies by state.

If you are visiting a state temporarily, you do not need to register your vehicle. All states allow you to drive an out-of-state car for a certain number of consecutive days .

Here’s how long each state allows drivers to register vehicles after moving.

Why You Should Consider Removing The Vein

    So, heres the deal.

Most of the time it will make no difference whatsoever and your shrimp will look and taste just fine.

Sometimes though, youll come across a rogue shrimp that doesnt taste quite right and can have a slightly bitter, sour, or muddy taste.

Even worse is the sandy or gritty texture you can find in your mouth having eaten a shrimp that hasnt been deveined. And no sauce or dressing can cover this up.

    Lamson Shrimp Deveiner Knife

The Lamson Shrimp Deveiner knife features a curved, stainless steel blade and a riveted handle in natural walnut.

To use it, you simply insert it at the top of the shrimps shell and cut just deep enough to scour next to the vein, then use the tip to pick it out.

    • Extremely well made. Lamson makes very high quality knives, and this is no exception.
    • Very handsome, professional looking tool. The natural walnut handle is gorgeous.
    • Sharp enough to cut right through shrimp shell right out of the package, with no aftermarket sharpening required
    • The thin, curved blade is much easier to use on shrimp than the relatively thick, straight blade on a paring knife, which can mutilate them if youre not extremely careful.
    • It can double as a paring knife in a pinch. Its made for processing shrimp, but its still workable for most purposes that call for a small, sharp knife. Definitely more versatile than other, more specialized shrimp deveining tools.
    • Compact and easy to store.

    • Natural walnut handle requires more maintenance than synthetic alternatives. The manufacturers recommend treating it with mineral oil after every cleaning.
    • Slightly pricier than other deveining knives. Its a premium product that works great straight out of the box, but you could probably get similar performance out of a much cheaper knife if youre willing to put in some work sharpening it

Test Kitchen: Skip Gadgets Use Scissors To Devein And Shell Shrimp

Q: When a recipe calls for cooking shrimp with shells on, whats the best way to devein them?

    Elizabeth Kampa,

    Livonia, Mich.

A: There are many fancy kitchen gadgets for deveining shrimp. Although most of these shrimp deveiners and peelers are inexpensive, a small pair of scissors works just as well. I keep a pair of cuticle scissors in my kitchen drawer just for deveining shrimp it works like a charm. But any small scissors will work.

Using the scissors, cut a slit through the shell and just a bit into the flesh along the back. You want to be able to expose the vein without cutting too deep into the flesh. Use the tip of the scissors to remove and discard the dark vein.

You can also use what are called EZ peel shrimp. These are shrimp that are pre-split along the back and almost to the tail so its easier to remove the shell. All you need to do is peel the shell away starting where it is cut. Most of these will also be deveined. But its a good idea to check each one, especially if youre squeamish about it.

When buying shrimp, keep in mind its sold by the number you get per pound. The larger the shrimp, the fewer per pound, and the smaller they are, the more you get. Consider what you intend to make with the shrimp when deciding which size to buy. Unless labeled otherwise, most of shrimp sold in these parts are farm-raised and previously frozen.

Defrosting Mistake Ive Made For Years

I typically defrost frozen shrimp by removing them from the bag, putting them in a bowl and running water over them.

WRONG. I just learned that water should never touch the shrimp or they will lose flavor.

Better Idea A better idea would be to remove the shrimp you need, put them in a zip lock bag and either let them defrost in the refrigerator overnight or run them under cold water in the bag.

You never want to defrost them in the microwave because you just may cook them some before you even get started.

    • Be aware of leakage or frozen surface ice on frozen shrimp. These are signs that the shrimp has been defrosted and refrozen and should be avoided.
Tip: If your palate is sensitive to iodine, avoid brown shrimp. The taste of the naturally occurring iodine is most often apparent in brown shrimp.

    Preparing Shrimp

    • “Refresh” frozen shrimp by soaking in salted water, 1 to 2 tbsp of salt to 1 quart of water.
    • The best way to keep shrimp fresh while preparing them is to keep them in ice water. Return the cleaned shrimp to the ice water until you are ready to cook them. Pat the shrimp dry with a paper towel before cooking.
    • Leave the shell on while boiling or steaming shrimp. The shell preserves the juices and natural flavors.
    • The black vein that runs along the back of shrimp is the digestive tract. Typically, whether veins are in or out, seldom is there a flavor difference unless the vein is large and contains a high volume of grit and digested material. It is removed more for the appearance than taste. The decision to remove the digestive tract is based on personal preference.
