Cost Of Charging Electric Cars At Public Stations
If you are a Tesla owner, then the Tesla Supercharger Network has points across the UK which are often free to use for older vehicles. Newer Tesla owners, who bought their vehicle after January 1st 2017, may only receive a set number of free hours of charge. According to Tesla, where possible, Tesla owners are billed at 26p per kWh . In other areas, they bill per minute. When billing per minute, there are two tiers to account for changes in charging speeds, called tier 1 and tier 2. Tier 1 is 60 kW and below and tier 2 is 60 kW and above. Tesla advise that tier 1 is half the cost of tier 2.
Certain Model S and X vehicles ordered before November 2, 2018 receive 400 kWh of Supercharger credits annually. Please consult the manufacturer if you are in doubt.
For non-Tesla owners, charging fees vary depending on the network you use. Registration, subscription and connection fees may apply. Take a look at Zap-Map or an overview of UKs main EV charging networks.
How Much Do Car Charging Stations Cost To Use On Average
To calculate the amount of money youll use on charging stations, youll have to consider the type of EV charger theyre using. Charging stations cost more to charge but decrease the time used to charge the cars to a few minutes compared to charging it for days or hours.
On average, it costs between $0.30- $0.60 kWh to charge an electric vehicle. Therefore, this means that a small car could cost about $11.50 to $23 to fully charge while a bigger or long-distance vehicle could cost between $22.50 to $45.
The prices differ because the cost of charging a vehicle varies depending on the company providing the charging services, the EV charging level, type of charger, and charging port location depending on the demand.
Level 3 chargers will cost between $0.40 and $0.60 per kWh, while level 2 chargers cost between $0.20 and $0.25 per kWh.
The cost of charging your vehicle at home depends on a couple of variables, such as if youre charging at peak hours, your electricity rates, and your type of charger.
However, the average cost is $0.20, but this could vary depending on a lot of things. So pay attention to those variables.
If you prefer charging at home, you could have a level 2 charger installed, which could take between $1700 to $4000 to buy the level 2 charger and have it professionally installed at your home. So when calculating the cost of charging at home, add these expenses to your calculations.
To calculate the cost of charging your electric vehicle, use the formula of
There’s A Lot Of Confusion Around The Cost Of Charging An Electric Car Here Are The Facts
Unlike with petrol or diesel cars, where one only has the forecourt fuel price to consider, there are a lot of variables when it comes to the cost of charging an electric car or a plug-in hybrid. When you charge an electric car at home or at a public charging station, the cost can fluctuate depending on when you charge, which tarif or charging network you use, how big the battery is and how much energy you need.

How Much Does An Ev Add To Your Electricity Bill
About 80% of EV charging happens at home, according to Energy.gov. So how much does it cost to charge an electric car at home? Well, that depends on the type of charger you have and the type of vehicle.
- 40 kWh battery
- 30 amp level 2 charger delivering 7.2 kW
It will take around 6 hours to fully charge your car. Thats based on 40kWh divided by 7.2KW which is 5.55 hours. We rounded up to 6 hours because your charging efficiency slows down as the battery charges.
That 5.55 hours of charging time will use around 40 kWh. Thats the number of kilowatt hours based on the KW of the electrical item multiplied by the number of hours .
So now we know how many kWh well use to charge an EV. Now to calculate how much that will cost.
The Texas average electricity rate is 11.4 cents per kwh, according to EIA.gov. That means it will cost you around $4.56 to charge an EV at your Texas home.
So lets finish the math and see how much an EV will add to your electricity bill per year.
Lets assume you get 200 miles per charge, and you drive 13,500 miles a year, which is the US average. Thats 68 charges per year. If you do 80% of your charging at home, youll charge your vehicle at home 54 times each year.
In Texas it will cost you around $246 annually to charge your EV. And that low cost is what makes electric vehicles popular in Texas.
What Does The Cost Calculation For Charging An Electric Car Depend On Which Option Is More Profitable
Choosing a network of charging stations, it is recommended to find out about the charging conditions beforehand. You can often find the following types of charging for charging your car:
- per minute charge
- payment per kilowatt used.
If the electric car supports charging with high-power direct current, then the per-minute charging will be the most advantageous option. Also, do not forget that some charging station networks charge customers for a single charging procedure.

Ev Charging Costs Vs Gasoline Fueling
When comparing the costs of fueling either an EV or a gasoline vehicle, there are a few variables to consider, such as:
- Miles per gallon on gasoline vehicles under consideration
- Type of charger that the electric car will use
- Whether the EV will be charged at home or at a public charger
When comparing a gasoline vehicle to charging an EV solely at public charging stations, for example, the electric car is a bit more expensive than the gasoline vehicle. However, when you compare a gasoline vehicle to charging an EV with an at-home EV charger, the latter is actually more cost-effective. This is because public charging stations charge a pretty high rate in terms of kilowatts per hour . While installing an EV charging station at home has higher upfront costs, the amount of savings on a monthly basis will make up for it in the long run.
Here are the average monthly costs for all three options. Note that the example gasoline vehicle were using gets roughly 33 miles per gallon at the current national average gas price of $3.38 per gallon and assuming that each vehicle goes 1,000 miles per month.
- Monthly gasoline vehicle fueling costs: $102.42
- Monthly public EV charging costs: $129.50
- Monthly at-home EV charging costs: $30-$70
Electric Car Charging Overview
Electric Car Charging is Easy
Imagine never stopping at a gas station again, and instead, have an unlimited supply of fuel available at home or wherever you normally park. For many electric car drivers, this is a reality. Battery-electric cars never need gas, and for short trips, plug-in hybrids might use no gas.
Electric car charging is simple, cost-effective and convenient, particularly when you are plugged in at homefilling up your car even while youre asleep. How long it takes to charge depends on the charging equipment and the size of the cars battery and its available charging capacity.
Although electric car drivers primarily charge at home, workplace and public chargers are increasingly available in communities nationwide. Use the EV Charging Station Map to find nearby charging.
Level 1 Charging
Level 1 is the slowest method, but sufficient for drivers who charge overnight and travel 30-40 miles per day. All electric cars come with a cable that can be plugged into a standard wall outlet with no equipment installation required. Level 1 works well at home, work or anywherewhen you have sufficient time to charge. Level 1 charging is ideal for plug-in hybrid electric cars that have smaller batteries, but it can suffice for some battery-electric car owners as well, depending on their daily range needs and length of time typically parked and charging.
Level 1 charging adds about 3.5 6.5 miles of driving range per hour of charging time.

What Does It Cost To Charge An Electric Car
Just how much cheaper is it to fuel an electric car and how do you work it out?
So far in 2021, sales of electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in Australia have soared by nearly 170 per cent in the first half of the year compared to 2020 levels.
While thats still only about 1.5 per cent of total new vehicle registrations theres no denying that EVs are becoming hot property.
If youre thinking of making the switch from an internal combustion engine petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicle to a fully battery-powered EV, there are many things youll want to know including how much it costs to charge one.
There isnt a straightforward answer to this question, as there are many variables that determine what EV owners or drivers must pay as far as filling up an EV is concerned, starting with the size of the battery.
Keep in mind that EV batteries are essentially fuel tanks in that they store electricity. In modern battery EVs of the 2020s, they range from about 24kWh to over 100kWh. Most are in the 45kWh to 65kWh bracket.
Two things need to be remembered: firstly, the bigger the battery, the more expensive the vehicle is to buy and secondly, it will need more electricity to charge it up. Thats simple enough.

How Do You Keep Electric Car Charging Costs Low
Electric cars are cheaper to run. Full stop. However, you can maximise your savings by switching to an energy provider or tariff that is aimed at EV drivers. For example, the Octopus Energy Go tariff offers four hours of electricity for just 5p per kWh between midnight and 4am. British Gas, OVO, EDF and more also offer EV-specific tariffs.
Although there are numerous supermarkets, on-street chargers and operators who still offer free charging, prices are creeping up. We recommend to all our customers that installing a dedicated charge point at home is the most convenient and cost-effective way of charging your electric car.
How Much Does Public Fast Charging Cost
First, theres one thing we need to make clear. Electric vehicles are not meant to be charged at public DC fast chargers every time a charge is needed. It stresses the battery, and it costs a lot more than charging at home. For instance, fast chargers can charge a Model 3 from 10-80% in less than 20 minutes. That much energy transfer puts wear on the vehicles battery management system. Fast charging is great for road trips or when youre in a pinch, but thats all theyre meant for.

Which Electric Cars Cost The Least To Charge
In the same way that a petrol or diesel car can either be fuel efficient or a fuel drinker, there are big differences in how efficiently electric cars use the power from their batteries. So charging costs will vary from one electric car to another.
Unlike traditional combustion cars, there is also some energy lost when charging an electric car. This is because it takes more electricity to charge a battery than a battery can hold. We refer to this as loss of charge, and some cars/batteries suffer more than others.
Our electricity consumption figures takes account of how much electricity a car uses when driving and incorporates loss of charge to create a more realistic idea of power use.
Youll find out running costs for every car tested since 2012, electric or otherwise, in our car reviews. Here, weve pulled out the three most energy efficient electric cars from our independent tests.

How To Recharge A Car
In order to fill the battery of an electric car with electricity again, you will need a power source and charger. Chargers are different, so you need to look at the type of adapter, because it must fit to a particular car. You can go for a little trick and take an adapter, such as a device like J1772.
The speed of the charging process largely depends on the power source, and more precisely on the power of the outlet that powers the charging station. These devices can be used in conjunction with extension cords if the electric car is standing far away from the garage. Using an electric car on a permanent basis, it is recommended to install a stationary charging equipment. You will need a qualified electrician to do this. This will allow you to charge the vehicle very quickly and at maximum capacity.

The New Mpg: Kilowatt
When you’re shopping for a gasoline-powered car, you pay attention to how many miles per gallon it gets. For plug-in vehicles, mpg isn’t the metric. Instead, an electric car’s energy consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles . That rating is on the car’s EPA fuel economy sticker and in the owner’s manual. Additionally, the federal Department of Energy, which establishes the energy-use ratings, keeps track of them on its fuel economy site, one efficiency list for pure electric cars and another for plug-in hybrids.
To figure out your cost of charging at home, multiply your vehicle’s kWh/100 miles figure by the electric rate for the time of day you’ll most often be charging . That figure will tell you the cost per 100 miles.
You also can work from the total kilowatt-hours it takes to recharge the EV’s battery. If an EV requires 40 kWh to recharge a fully depleted battery, and the rate is 18 cents per kWh, that’s $7.20 for a fill-up.

How To Accurately Calculate The Cost Of Charging An Electric Car
This short article will tell you about a special cost to charge electric car calculator. It does not matter how the owner will charge his vehicle – at a gas station or in your own garage.
For a correct calculation, the calculator will offer to select the type of socket , as well as the used charging station . You will be able to compare the cost of different recharging scenarios to determine the question – is it more profitable to “recharge” the electric car at home or at a specialized station.
Is It Really Cheaper To Drive An Electric Vehicle
Of all the ways that electric vehicles save you money, spending less on gasoline is arguably the most compelling. The price of both gasoline and electricity will vary depending on your state. But as of this writing, the average cost of regular gasoline per gallon is about twice the equivalent cost in electricity. If you buy an electric vehicle for the long run, the money you save on fuel can really add up.
Electric vehicles are also less expensive to maintain, aside from the usual wear items like tires, brakes, and windshield wipers. You will eventually need to replace the battery, but new EVs today are sold with an eight-year or 100,000-mile limited warranty. Theres a good chance you wont have to deal with any major mechanical repairs, lowering your average maintenance costs.
There are also electric vehicle tax credits and rebates, which can make your ownership experience that much more rewarding. If youre able to claim federal tax credits, state rebates, and utility rebates, the savings can be more substantial than you might realize. Some utility companies also offer reduced electricity rates with your purchase or lease, lowering the cost of charging an electric vehicle at home.
