Park Your Car On A Level Surface
Before checking the current level of oil in your engine, or adding any oil, youll want to make sure that your car is parked on an even surface. That way, you can be sure youll get an accurate reading.
Step 1: Park on flat ground. Check the level of the ground where your car is parked. Make sure the car is parked on flat ground.
Step 2: You must park on a flat surface. If the cat is parked on a slope, drive your car to a flat surface before checking the oil.
- Tip: If youve just driven your car, make sure to allow 5 to 10 minutes before checking the oil level. You need to give the oil a few minutes to drain from the top of the engine down to the tank where the oil sits when the car isnt running.
Dip Your Dipstick And Check The Level
Replace the clean dipstick and push it all the way back into its tube.
Pull it back out and check where the oil line is in relation to the notches on the end.
- If the top of the oil streak is between the min and max marks, the level is fine.
- If the level is below halfway between the marks, then we would recommend adding some oil.
- If it’s close to or even below the minimum mark, then you definitely need to add some oil.

Oil changes are just one of the many minor hassles of car ownership, but they’re crucial to keeping your car in good shape. Of course, if you don’t change your oil on time and with the proper products, it could void your car’s warranty.
However, car experts now say that the standard oil change interval of every three months or every 3,000 miles is old news, and that most cars can travel quite a bit farther before needing the oil replaced. If you’re changing your oil more frequently than necessary, it won’t help your car. It doesn’t harm it either, but you’re wasting money, time and resources. Keep in mind, too, that throwing away oil that’s still usable puts a strain on the environment.
There are four main “recommended” intervals for oil changes based on factors specific to you and your car:

- Every 3,000 miles
- Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles

What Youll Need To Check And Top Up Your Oil:
- Rubber gloves
- Engine oil
- Funnel
Oil can stain your hands so youll be glad of the gloves, and the kitchen towel is great for wiping the dipstick after youve used it. The funnel is a lifesaver for not spilling oil everywhere.
Make sure you have the correct oil for your car. Consult your owners manual to confirm the oil type.
Remove The Dipstick Again And Check Level
You should then remove the dipstick again to check the oil level. There will be two marks on the dipstick to show the optimum level that your oil should be at. Your oil level should be somewhere between the two.
If your oil level is below the bottom line, or if there isnt any oil on the dipstick at all, you should immediately top up your engine oil.

Adding Oil To The Ac System
One thing I havent mentioned yet is putting refrigerant oil in the system.
You normally do this when recharging the system after replacing one of the major components. This is tricky. The service manual normally tells you how much refrigerant oil should be added with each major component replaced on the AC system. You need to be very careful during this process.
Many people ask what refrigerant oil actually is: Basically, it is a specialized oil meant to be used in your air conditioning system that is engineered to run smoothly through all the moving parts.

The thing is, most replacement components, such as compressors, often come with the prescribed amount of oil already in the part. If you add oil on top of this, you might saturate the system and it wont work as well.
In addition, its not a good idea to mix R134a refrigerant oil with R12 oil. This becomes an issue if youre retrofitting an AC system. On top of that, its difficult to add oil to the AC system with DIY tools. Professional AC equipment comes with provisions to add the correct amount of oil with each charge. Off-the-shelf cans sometimes come with refrigerant oil in them as well.

How To Remove Excess Engine Oil
Now that you know that the engine is filled with extra oil, it is time to drain the excess oil. There are two ways to do this: the first method is easy and less messy. It requires an oil suction pump through which you pull the oil from either the cap access point or the dipstick tube. This method does not require you to raise your car, but you will need an air supply for the vacuum. You can use both a manual vacuum pump or an automatic. The second method is traditional and can be messy. The tools required are a drive socket wrench and a plastic oil pan. Raise your car to some height, then crawl underneath and locate the plug. Place the plastic oil pan beneath the oil plug and loosen the plug until the oil drips. Dont loosen the plug too much and remove only a certain amount. Check again with the dipstick to ensure the correct amount of oil.
Note: Some vehicles have a cover under the car that has to be removed before you can reach the oil plug.
A/c Compressor Oil Capacities
If you are replacing a compressor or other A/C system component, it is important to replace any compressor oil that has been lost when parts are changed. As the engine is running, a thin film of oil coats the cylinder wall and piston skirt.
