What Are The Safest Sedans For 2020

How Tesla Used GLASS to Build the Worldâs Safest car

These are some of the safest four-doors you can buy right now.

Sedan sales keep giving way to more popular SUVs, but the former is still very much alive. For many, their first car is still a sedan. And enthusiasts still prefer the low seating position and driving dynamics of a car. Regardless of where sedan customers are coming from, a good set of safety scores can mean the difference between serious consideration and moving on to another car. So if you’re curious which are the safest sedans for 2020, you’ve come to the right place.

Simple physics suggests a larger, higher-riding SUV wins in a collision against a sedan, but today’s cars have the latest in safety technology to keep young drivers and families alike safe. We look at some of the safest sedans on the market today, based on their crash rating scores from the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration , the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety , and the safety systems offered on these models. The least expensive models are featured first.

Safest Cars Tested By Euro Ncap In 2020

1. Volkswagen ID3

The Volkswagen ID.3 scored well across the board. Protection for adult occupants was rated at 87%, while child-occupant protection was rated at 89%. The ID.3 scored 71% for how well it protects vulnerable road users alongside the effectiveness of its automatic emergency braking system.

Its other safety assist systems were given a score of 88%. VWs first purpose-built electric car isnt just safe, its also spacious, relaxing, and pretty good to drive, but its a shame its interior is let down by a few cheap plastics.

Hyundai Elantra Msrp $17150

The Hyundai Elantra occupies an odd position on our list of the 10 safest cars under $20,000. At about halfway down the list, the Elantra hits the point where the safest cars start to become more affordable, opening up the possibility of options packages and even higher trim levels. Thats a good thing, because the Elantra is one of the few cars here that doesnt come standard with a rearview camera, but it can be added on within our budget. In terms of safety testing, the Elantra earns five stars in the NHTSAs side crash test, with four stars in frontal crash and rollover, for four stars overall. Yet it earns perfect scores and the Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

Honda Odyssey: What We Think

We like the Honda Odyssey for its smooth ride and slick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. More important, though, the Odyssey has helpful features such as a child viewing system and an intercom that facilitates communication from the driver up front to kids in the back seats. However, we think the Stow ‘n Go seats inside the Chrysler Pacifica are more practical.

Ford Focus Msrp $16775

Safest Small Cars for 2020

The Ford Focus is a long-running favorite in the compact car class, even though it was last redesigned in 2012. In practical terms, that means a rearview camera comes standard, but some newer driver assistance features arent available, within our $20,000 budget or otherwise. Still, the Focus is well qualified for our list of the safest cars that cost less than $20,000, and its low price of entry means that buyers can tack on some options. The Focus doesnt have the best crash test scores on this list, but theyre still good for a small car: 5-Star Overall from the NHTSA with one star deducted in rollover testing, and mostly Good scores, with one Acceptable in the small overlap test, from the IIHS.

Lexus Es Safety Rating And Features

In addition to being a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the Lexus ES receives an overall five-star rating from the NHTSA. The government agency’s testing included a four-star rating in front and rollover crashes, and five stars in the side crash test. The midsize sedan comes with a generous list of standard safety features including a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, all-speed adaptive cruise control, auto high beams, and lane tracing assist that helps keep the car centered in its lane.

Honda Accord: What We Think

We’re not shy about saying it: The Honda Accord is one of our favorite new cars on the market today, period. The four-door excels in just about every way, boasting excellent road manners, strong and smooth power delivery, impressive fuel economy, and a spacious, comfortable interior. An available hybrid model is yet another strength of the Accord lineup.

The Safest Cars On The Road

The bar keeps getting raised for cars to score in the top category of safety. Now, in addition to crash protection, cars must have effective headlights to get the highest rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Driving down a winding road at night, the power of your headlights may determine if you see a pedestrian or an oncoming car and are thus able to avoid an accident. That’s why the IIHS is also weighing the effectiveness of headlights when assigning its top auto safety rating.

It began testing headlights this year after determining that federal standards for headlights are set in laboratory tests and don’t reflect real-world driving conditions. In one of the initial IIHS tests, 17 of 21 small SUVs were rated as having ineffective headlights.

For this year’s ratings of 2017 models, vehicles that got the best rating — Top Safety Pick Plus — had to have good or acceptable ratings on their headlights in addition to the previous criteria of scoring well in front, side and rollover crash tests. Since last year, top-rated cars also must have a good or acceptable automatic braking technology to avoid front-end crashes.

The second-level rating, Top Safety Pick , goes to cars that meet all the standards except for good or acceptable headlights. In some cases, the rating applies only to the version of the car with optional safety equipment .

The Safest Cars You Can Buy

Since most modern cars are safe, its difficult to buy a newer model that isnt. Vehicles today are much safer than vehicles built just 10 years ago, thanks to ever-improving technology. Organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , which rate vehicle safety, regularly increase their crash test and safety standards. To put it in perspective, if a 2010 vehicle was tested using todays guidelines, it would perform poorly. However, even if most vehicles are safe, there are still those that stand out with high ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA.

Below, we put together a list of the safest vehicles in each segment. The ranking is based on IIHS ratings, but NHTSA ratings are also considered. We picked the IIHS because, in addition to its six crash test ratings, they also rate crash avoidance/prevention and vehicle headlights. The IIHS also issues two awards that arent easy for many vehicles to win. The IIHS crash avoidance test is important because it rates an increasingly popular driver-assist feature, emergency automatic braking. This driver-assist feature, along with others, is now becoming standard on many new models. At the very least, most vehicles offer these features as add-ons.

Top Safest Cars On The Road

Driving on the road, highway, or even a neighborhood street can be unpredictable. In addition to driving laws intended to control the flow of traffic and safe driving habits, many drivers rely on their vehicles to keep them safe.

But how safe is your vehicle? There are a number of safety features that have become common additions to enhance a vehicles ability to protect passengers. Being aware of these features and the vehicles that include them can help drivers with the selection of their next vehicle.

How Vehicles Are Categorized

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety , vehicle size and weight play a direct role in its ability to protect passengers from force experienced in a collision that could cause injury. If the vehicle is large, the space from the front of the car to the occupant compartment provides more protection from force sustained in the collision than that of a smaller vehicle.

Additionally, heavier vehicles will push lighter objects backward during impacts, further reducing the force and offering more protection for passengers.

During safety tests conducted by the IIHS and the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration , vehicles are classified into a series of categories based on weight and size, including:

  • Small cars
  • Minivans
  • Large pickups

Safety Ratings Have Been Announced For Five New Car Models Did They Do Well Enough To Make It Into Our List Of The 10 Safest Cars On Sale

16 Safest Small Cars

Safety organisation Euro NCAP has assessed five more new cars under its latest, stricter scoring regime. Only one of them gained the full five-star rating, and two were marked down to four stars for falling short in different areas.

The second-generation Vauxhall Mokka didn’t achieve five-star scores in any of the four areas rated: adult and child protection, the protection of vulnerable road users and the fitment of active safety assistance systems. Its automatic emergency braking system can only detect other vehicles, not cyclists, and doesn’t have a front centre airbag to lessen injuries to adults in side collisions.

The Renault Kangoo performed well in most crash tests, but without a front centre airbag it doesn’t offer adult occupants the highest level of side impact protection, so it was given an overall rating of four stars. It was, however, praised for the standard fitment of an AEB system that can detect cars, cyclists and pedestrians, and avoid collisions with them.

Cupra is the high-performance brand of Spanish car maker Seat. Its Cupra Leon hot hatch is based on the Seat Leon and it gained the same five-star safety rating as the mainstream hatchback, posting strong scores for adult and child protection and its active safety assistance systems.

So far, 25 cars have been put through the new, more stringent safety testing. Here we take a look at the top 10 performers so far.

Toyota Avalon With Specific Headlights

The big Avalon sedan has been the recipient of good scores in all crash testing for the last ten years and has seriously upped its headlight game in the last three. The coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating applies only to 2019 models built after September 2018, when the shape and vent hole size of the passenger frontal airbag were modified to improve occupant protection in passenger-side small overlap frontal crashes. Look for a Touring, Limited, or Hybrid Limited model for best headlight performance.

Institute For Highway Safety Safety Guidelines

The IIHS is the main authority in the United States for determining the safety of vehicles on the road. They use the following criteria to determine how safe a car is:

  • Frontal crashworthiness cars that do well in the federal governments 35 mph head-on test as well as the IIHS 40 mph moderate overlap test are considered safe
  • Side crashworthiness if your car has a good rating in the IIHS side-impact test, you are 70 percent less likely to die in a side-impact crash
  • Roof strength good IIHS roof-strength ratings will protect you better in a rollover crash than those with a poor rating
  • Head restraints a good IIHS head restraint ratings means you are 15 percent less likely to suffer a neck injury in an accident
  • Electronic stability control cars manufactured after 2012 have this as a standard feature and lowers the risk of fatal single-vehicle crashes by around 50 percent and risk of fatal rollovers by 80 percent
  • Car weight IIHS says that the safest cars weigh between 3,500 and 4,500 pounds. Smaller, lighter vehicles do not offer as much protection as larger vehicles

It is also important to check the NHTSA recall database periodically to be sure your vehicle does not have a recall notice you are unaware of. If you find that it does, you need to get it to a repair shop immediately.
