Is This A New Thing

Kit cars go all the way back to the beginning of the automobile. The first known example was sold by an Englishman named Thomas Hyler-White in 1896, and it was such a success that he began selling it here in the U.S. sixteen years later. But kit cars really took off in the 50s along with the hot-rodding craze. Kit cars from this time were body swaps on the chassis of mass-produced cars, often with swapped or customized engines.

As millions of Volkswagen Beetles populated American roads, their used chassis became a cheap platform for more fun. In the mid-60s, the model that really blew the lid off was the Meyers Manx pictured here. After a couple of years, Meyers switched to selling them prebuilt, but competitors flooded the kit car market. By the end of the 60s, it was hard to find anyone asking what is a kit car?

History Of Kit Cars In The Uk

EARLY DAYS

Since the turn of the twentieth century, people in sheds and garages all over the country have been dismantling and rebuilding cars, creating home-brewed specials from all manner of components. The earliest attempts at rebuilds, new builds and odd builds frequently used Austin Sevens, old Ford 8s or even Bentleys as a platform on which to create the car of the builders dreams.

The first inspiration for kit cars in the UK can probably be attributed to a design created by engineer Thomas Hyler-White , in 1896. It later appeared in a magazine called English Mechanic and World Of Science and Art in January 1900. The series of part-works entitled A Small Car and How to Build it, based on a Benz Velo, appeared in fifty-six instalments.

Interest in self-building unique cars accelerated in Britain after the Second World War, when any new cars that were being produced post-war were destined for export to provide the government with much-needed funds. De-mob happy young men up and down the country were starved of motorsport and petrol was still rationed. Bowed but undaunted, the motoring enthusiast adopted a make do and mend approach and did the best job they could to turn old bangers into objects of desire. Soon, intrepid engineers, many of whom were motorsport participants, came up with a range of solutions to the challenge.

When it comes to kit cars, there are few more iconic than the Caterham Seven. In fact, thats how the original Lotus design started out, Road & Track explains. As with the current model, Lotus founder Colin Chapman used British tax loopholes to offer a DIY sports car at a discount.

Today, the Caterham Seven isnt quite as much of a bargain. Even the cheapest version costs about $50,000. Building it as a kit car, though, does cut about $5000 off the price. However, as Top Gearand the Evening Standard discovered, a Caterham Seven isnt exactly as easy to assemble as the kit car name implies. At some point, a hammer will likely come into play. Its also not a quick process: R& T is currently assembling its own Seven and estimates a build time of 80-100 hours.

But, when its done, the Caterham Seven is just about the purest distillation of a sports car. The cabin is so compact, R& T reports, that the transmission tunnel can almost function as a secondary heater. The windshield is removable. Therere no doors or any safety features beyond seat belts. But the steering is sharp, and the lack of bodywork or pillars makes it easy to sight your driving line. And even the heaviest model only weighs about 1345 pounds.
