1 – Replacement of Plates
A lost or stolen licence plate or a plate which number you don’t like, may be replaced at any time at your local Licence Office
Documents Required:
- Application – Requires the identification of owner
- Registration of both: The vehicle and the plates to be replaced.
The plates must be returned to the Ministry of Transportation.
If one plate is missing plate and it is not the validated plate, In order to obtain credit for the validation sticker it is necessary to return the validated plate.
If the missing plate is the validated plate, In order to obtain credit for the validation sticker it is necessary to return the no validated plate along with a police report filled out with and signed by the constable on duty at any police station.
2 – Replacement of Permits
General Information: The document that confirms the proprietorship of your vehicle is the Vehicle Permit In Ontario this document is composed by two sections: The Vehicle Portion and the Plate Portion.
The two sections look similar and some information is common to both sections but in fact they contain some different information.

Replacing A Lost Vehicle Registration
If you qualify for online replacement of your registration you MUST replace it online.
To replace a lost vehicle registration for a leased vehicle
- Contact your leasing company for legal permission to obtain a duplicate registration. Power of Attorney must include:
- Lessee name .
- Statement authorizing lessee to sign application.
- Vehicle Identification Number , year, make and model of vehicle.
- You will need the following:
- A driver’s license or other valid form of identification.
- A New Jersey insurance identification card or receipt from a previous registration or title transaction.

Stolen Or Lost Tag Specifics
If your vehicle license tag has been stolen, there are immediate steps you need to take before going to the DMV. A police report must be made so you wont be facing charges or fines from another vehicle using your plate on tolls, stoplights or worse. The report must go with you to the DMV in person to get a replacement vehicle registration and tag for your vehicle. If you dont have a police report for a stolen tag, additional fees may be incurred at the DMV.
A lost paper registration or one that has been mutilated can be replaced live, by mail or downloaded online. Take a photo of the tag and any sticker that may be on the tag to show or send to the DMV online, in person or by mail for replacement.
