The Renault Zoe Is One Of 11 Models Assessed By Euro Ncap In Its Latest Round Of Crash Tests But Did Any Of Them Do Well Enough To Make Our List Of The 10 Safest Cars On Sale

Independent safety organisation Euro NCAP has given the Renault Zoe zero stars in its latest round of testing, making it only the third car ever to receive the lowest rating.

The Zoe was originally tested in 2013, when it was awarded five stars, but Renault has removed key passive safety features from the model since then. The spec changes which are thought to be due to the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage and might be a temporary measure mean the Zoe now falls far short of the safety standards achieved by most new cars.

Explaining its rating, Euro NCAP said the electric car scored poorly in the safety assist category, where its score was considerably below the average achieved by other car makers. The model also performed poorly for adult occupant protection in crash tests, including those that simulate the worst accidents.

The organisation criticised the Zoe because it is not fitted with active safety technology such as lane-departure warnings and automatic emergency braking . Those features are now available as standard on most new cars.

In response, Renault said it acknowledges the results obtained by Euro NCAP but insists the Zoe is a safe vehicle that complies with all regulatory standards, and that it is continually improving its vehicles to comply with constantly evolving standards.

Euro NCAP toughens up its testing every two years to encourage car makers to keep improving safety standards.

Nissan Maxima: What We Think

The Safest Car in the World and Why

We’re ready for a new Maxima. The current sedan offers a design that both fits nicely within the Nissan family but is still clearly a step above the similarly sized Altima. Higher trims have a premium interior and the standard V-6 makes 300 hp, but the steering is a bit too heavy and the brake feel could be better.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety,

There is some good news for safety-minded new car buyers. Ninety 2021 model year vehicles have been recognized for their safety benefits. Thats a notable increase from last February, when 64 models were cited.

Volvo garnered the most picks in the top category, with nine cars. Hyundai Motor Group, including the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, earned 17 awards, the most overall. Five were in the top category and 12 were in the second category.

Only one automaker, Mitsubishi, failed to earn a single award. The automaker did not garner any wins last year either. General Motors came in with only two wins one in each award category, striking for such a large manufacturer.

Those are the highlights of a new evaluation of 2021 models that aims to give consumers an efficient way to identify vehicles with the best level of safety available. The annual list was released on Wednesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit financed by the insurance industry.

Euro NCAP is the organisation that crash-tests new cars. It uses a star rating to assess the safety of new models, but it also gives separate ratings for adult protection, child protection, vulnerable road-user protection and safety assist systems. By taking an average of these ratings you can see which cars it ranks as the safest overall.

In June 2020, Euro NCAP updated its crash tests to simulate a head-on crash into another car and assesses how well the test car insulates occupants of both vehicles.

Another new test simulates a side impact on the passenger side and measures the potential for front-seat occupants to collide with the driver and cause injury.

It also revamped how it tests the effectiveness of automatic emergency braking systems and systems that monitor how alert a driver is, while another new assessment takes post-crash safety into account. This tests the cars emergency call systems, how easy it is to extract a casualty from the car and the quality of information available to help emergency services who arrive on the scene.

Euro NCAP updates its testing protocols every two years, so the changes introduced in 2020 will be carried over into 2021. Euro NCAP has decided to extend the current rules for an additional year, however, so the next big update wont come into effect until 2023.

Last year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced major changes to its award system for Top Safety Picks and Top Safety Pick Plus winners. In short, it became a lot harder for automakers to earn the two coveted titles.

On Thursday, we learned the first batch of cars that meet the more stringent criteria, and just over 60 models made the cut so far, according to IIHS testing.

The real stars are the Top Safety Pick Plus winners, which need to earn a Good rating in all crash tests, feature Advanced or Superior scores for front crash prevention and come with standard Acceptable or Good rated headlights.
