How Do I Transfer My Car Registration From One State To Another
Transferring your car registration after moving states follows the same general steps for registering a vehicle. The main difference is that you may need to mail your old license plate back to your previous state if its required. Otherwise, ask what to do with your old license plate when registering in your new home state.
Also, make sure to transfer the registration within your new states timeline by verifying the limit with the DMV. Although most states allow transfers as far out as 30 days from your moving date, some states have shorter time limits like 20 days.

7 Day Transfer Law
Grace Period for Registration Transfers after Vehicle Purchase:
If you own a vehicle or trailer and purchase a new vehicle or trailer from a dealer, or purchase a used vehicle or trailer from a private party, you may transfer your registration to the new vehicle. Massachusetts allows a grace period of seven calendar days from the date you dispose of your previous vehicle to register your new vehicle.
Under this grace period, the following conditions must be met:
- You must be at least 18 years old
- The new vehicle or trailer must be the same type and have the same number of wheels as the previous one
- You must carry the transfer documents, which show the registration number to be transferred, in your vehicle
- You must have lost possession of or disposed of your previous vehicle
- The registration plates must be attached to the new vehicle
There is no grace period if you do not currently have a registered vehicle or trailer. The RMV does not issue temporary registration plates.
Transferring A Title After A Lease Buyout
Paying off your vehicle loan is a major achievement! Congratulations. The state of Massachusetts implements a paperless lien and vehicle title system, so the title remains in the ELT system until:
- The loan is paid off and the lien holder contacts the RMV
- The vehicle is taken in trade by a dealer
- The vehicle is wrecked and an insurance company pays off the balance
- The lien holder asks for a paper copy to be mailed to them
When one of these situations occurs, the vehicle title is printed by the RMV and sent to the proper location, such as the owner, lien holder, or insurance company the following day.

How Do I Transfer Registration When Im Selling My Car
The process for transferring a registration can differ based on how you sell your car:
- If youre selling your car privately to buy another car, you can follow the steps for transferring your car registration. Rather than applying for a new license plate, you can tell the DMV attendant that youd like to use your previous plate. However, a transferred registration may still expire on the same date as before unless you pay for your next renewal during the transfer.
- If youre trading in a car with a car dealer, you can ask the dealer to transfer the old registration and license plate to your new car. They can complete the registration so that its on your new car or no longer in your name. Keep a copy of the registration form to show that the transfer happened in case you need to prove you sold the car in the future.
- If youre not buying another car, youll need to cancel your registration with the DMV. You can do this in person, by mail or online, depending on your states cancellation process. You can print off the cancellation form online or get it from your DMV office. You may need to surrender your license plate by mail or in person.

What Is The Penalty For Late Registration Of A Vehicle In Texas
A vehicle may be operated without penalty for up to five working days after its registration expires. After five days, you may be issued a citation of up to $200. There are some exceptions to this rule: If you register your vehicle within five days of it being abandoned, it will not be considered expired.
You must file a new application with the Department of Public Safety for each period of ownership change. You can do this by filing a “Renewal Application” with DPS. The first thing you need to do is get a “Certificate of Existence” from the Office of the Secretary of State. This can be done by going to www.sos.state.tx.us and searching for “Certificate of Existence.” You will need to provide your vehicle identification number . This can usually be found on the windshield inside front fender.
You should file your renewal application with DPS as soon as possible after obtaining the Certificate of Existence. It does not have to be filed right away, but it cannot be held off for more than five days.
