How electronic stability control (ESC) works

Since electronic stability control is an extension of the anti-lock braking system and traction control system , it’s typically safe to drive a vehicle that has an ESC malfunction. Electronic stability control systems can activate brake calipers and modulate the engine power, but malfunctioning systems usually fail to operate at all.

If you notice the DSP, ESP, or ESC light come on, it’s a good idea to have it checked out by a qualified mechanic. However, you should be able to continue driving the vehicle as if it didn’t have stability control.

You see, your steering wheel can only control the movement of your car when the wheels are rotating. Once the tires start sliding, your steering inputs do not affect the car’s motion.

To understand why your tires skid in the first place, you need to understand the first law of motion. According to this law, a body in motion will remain in the same state until and unless an external force is applied. Therefore, the first law of motion prevents the car from changing its course when you try to turn a vehicle skidding in a straight line. That’s because if your tires are skidding, they don’t have any grip, so they’re applying little to no external force that will affect your car’s direction.

How The System Works

Electronic stability control is a computerized system that works by transmitting signals to the ESC control unit from individual sensors that are attached to each wheel. If a car begins to rotate in a direction different from the angle of the steering wheel, the sensors alert the system, which is then able to brake individual wheels as necessary to correct oversteering or understeering. It also slows the engine until control is regained. This allows the ESC to monitor and recover from skids that a human driver can’t.

Is Traction Control The Same Thing As Esp

Traction control is not the same thing as ESP. It is usually controlled by your ESP but it serves a different purpose. Instead of stopping your car from sliding or spinning in corners, traction control is as its name implies designed to give your cars driven wheels more traction under power.

Say youre joining a roundabout quickly, you spot a gap in traffic and accelerate from a standstill to make it, only you do it too quickly, your engines power overawes the grip of the tyres, they spin and you go nowhere quickly.

Do the same thing with traction control activated and it will intervene, either by reducing engine power or by braking a spinning wheel to send the power to the wheel that does have grip the idea is to meter out power, making the most of the grip available. Its particularly effective on wet roads.

That said, there are times when traction control isnt so great particularly when you want your wheels to spin like if youre trying to dislodge the car from snow. Pressing the ESP button on most mainstream cars turns off the traction control not the ESP allowing your cars driven wheels to spin freely, giving you the momentum needed to break free.

How Does The Esp System Work

The ESP does not work alone. It works in conjunction with the traction control and the anti-locking brakes . Modern cars have an onboard computer that monitors most of the cars functions.

If one wheel slips, the ESP will control the other wheels by reducing power and applying brakings to correct your cars stability.

The ESP can also inform the cars engine to reduce power if your car is steering dangerously. This will then influence the power that is being supplied to individual wheels. This comes in handy when, for example, you keep revving the car on the icy ground, but there is no traction on the wheels. Power will be reduced hence, enabling you to have more grip on the wheel.

Understanding The Moving Parts Of Esc

Now that we know why ESC is needed, we can look at the components which make it possible.

  • Wheels speed sensor: Every wheel on your car comes with a wheel speed sensor. This sensor consists of a perforated magnetic ring and a Hall effect sensor. As the wheel rotates, the magnetic field created by the ring changes periodically. The Hall effect sensor collects this data enabling the sensor to calculate the speed of the wheels.
  • Yaw rate sensor: The yaw rate sensor monitors the vehicle’s rotation. To measure this rotation, the yaw rate sensor uses a micro-electromechanical gyroscope. This gyroscope measures the Coriolis force acting on the vehicle to estimate how much the car has rotated about its center of gravity.
  • Steering angle sensor: As the name suggests, the steering angle sensor determines the steering wheel’s rotation angle. Mounted on the steering wheel shaft, the sensor uses magnetic gears and a Hall effect sensor to detect the rotation angle.
  • ECU: Just like a CPU is the brains of a personal computer, an ECU is a computer that monitors the critical operations of your car. This includes tasks like tracking the amount of fuel and air entering your engine, but unlike personal computers, a car has several ECUs. These computing devices communicate with one another to enable features like Automatic emergency braking, Adaptive cruise control systems, and Lane-keeping assist.

Electronic Stability Control came about as a result of anti-lock brake systems in new cars advancing over the years. ABS only activates when you step on the brake pedal, but what about the rest of the time? Thats where electronic stability control steps in. Like the anti-lock braking system, the ESC system monitors the rotational speed of the wheels and other parameters such as steering angle. If the computer detects a loss of steering wheel control or traction, the computer can reduce the engine power and/or engage the brakes to try and retain control of the vehicle.

There are many names for electronic stability control, such as vehicle stability control and dynamic stability control , but they all perform similar functions. Refer to the owners manual for specific information on how the electronic stability program works on your vehicle.

The Functions Of The Esp

The electronic stability program determines the drivers steering movements and measures the lateral acceleration of the car. This data is collected by the sensors and then send to the ESP. If the data shows that the direction of travel and the angle of the steering do not match, then the skid protection intervenes. Thus, individual wheels are decelerated and the engine power is adjusted accordingly to stabilize the car again.

While the ESP decelarates the speed of the wheels, it also prevents the oversteering or understeering of the vehicle. An oversteer is when a vehicle breaks out over the rear wheels to the outside of the curve when the vehicle is turning too fast in a curve. In an understeer, however, the vehicle is pushed over the front wheels to the outer edge of the curve.

The ESP is linked to the electronic brake force distribution, anti-lock braking system and traction control in your car. A lead angle sensor measures where the driver is heading and sends that data to the computer. The yaw rate sensor records the rotational movements of the vehicle. A lateral acceleration sensor also measures whether the car is slipping sideways.

If the electronic stability program determines if the driver steers to the left, but the car breaks out to the right, then the system brakes the right front wheel. This way the car is kept in its lane.

Why Do Cars Need Esc

ESC is now a legal requirement, but its there to benefit you.

For example, on a particularly wet day, you could hit an unexpected puddle and find your car skidding across the road. An ESC system will detect a sudden loss of grip, and reduce power to help you regain control.

That said, it will never completely eliminate the risk of you losing control of your car. You must be vigilant and use your cars throttle delicately in hazardous driving conditions.

For instance, if youre driving up an incline and need to spin the tires to gt over an icy patch, you might need to turn the ESC off to do so.
