Well, cars do not take cans to get your car recharged. The cars made these days are so efficient, that they need a very small amount of refrigerant to cool your car. But one thing is important, even a slight amount of extra refrigerant might cause a problem to the system, so make sure you follow the chart while filling the refrigerant and fill the desired amount into it.

Overcharging the system might lead to the following problems-

  • Reduced cooling
  • High Pressurized system, that might explode
  • All these problems might lead you to change the compressor of the air conditioning unit, and this will cost you a lot of money. So, if you observe any of these signs after you recharge the refrigerant, get your car checked by a professional immediately.

Also, disposing or leaking the refrigerant is a serious offense and you might be heavily fined if you do so. So, make sure you follow all the rules while removing and recharging the refrigerant and do not cause any harm to you and the environment.

    What Is An Ac Recharge

Simply put, an AC recharge means adding more refrigerant to your vehicle. This process is a very common maintenance requirement for older vehicles that still use Freon as a refrigerant. Most modern cars have started using a refrigerant called R134a instead, which doesnt need to be topped off quite as often. If you have a new vehicle that commonly needs more refrigerant, theres a good chance you have an AC leak somewhere in the system. Either way, well get to the root of the problem and help you stay cool on the road.

Make Sure The Compressor Is Running

The first thing to do in this step is starting the engine. Next, you need to turn on the A/C while the fan must be turned to maximum. Then, follow the hose that runs from the low side fill port to the compressor, which is attached to the engine.

After that, find the pulley on the compressor. If the center part of the pulley is spinning, its good and engaged. Otherwise, you need to add half a can of r-134a and see if the compressor is engaged. If its not, your car needs to be taken to a mechanic.

You are supposed to let the engine run and the A/C at maximum until you have finished refilling.

    Find The Refrigerant Fill Port

How to Safely and Easily Add Refrigerant to Your Cars AC System

After you open the cars hood you will have to find the refrigerant fill port that is located on the left side of the engine bay. The fill port looks like a small metal pipe that has rubber hose at either end.

The refrigerant fill port should be near the part of the engine bay that is called a firewall, and you should just follow the larger of two hoses that protrude from the firewall.

Throughout this process, you shouldnt touch parts of the engine bay or the high-pressure hoses since they can be very hot.

The refrigerant fill port has a plastic lid at the top and you must remove it in order to start refilling the cars AC system with the refrigerant.

  • The compressor does not engage
  • One hot summer day, you get into the car, turn on the engine and the air conditioner. However, a few minutes later, you notice that the air is not as cool as its supposed to be. When this happens, its likely that the refrigerant in the AC system is running out, which takes a short time to refill. With that in mind, Onroadtipshas compiled a comprehensive guide on how to add Freon to car.

Freon is a trademark of several halocarbon products made by The Chemours Company. They are non-flammable, low-toxicity, and stable gases or liquids commonly used as refrigerants.

Before starting with the guide, its worth noting that it applies to 134a and r-134a refrigerants.

Check If The Compressor Is Functioning Properly

You will have to establish whether or not the low refrigerant levels are in fact the reason why your cars AC isnt functioning at full capacity.

In order to do this, you will have to start your cars engine, turn the AC on, and set the fan to the maximum. Afterward, you should locate the compressor that is connected to the engine by a hose on the low side fill port.

You should then search for a pulley on the compressor, and check if its middle part is spinning. The compressor is functioning properly if the middle part of the pulley is spinning, but if it is not you should proceed to add approximately half of the refrigerant can to the cars AC system.

If the issue still persists afterward, you should take your vehicle to the mechanic, as this can be a sign of a more complex problem and you shouldnt attempt to fix it on your own.

Is It Legal To Vent Old Refrigerant From Your A/c System Into The Air When Making Repairs To Your Vehicle

Under former EPA rules, it was ILLEGAL for anyone to intentionally vent refrigerant from an A/C system into the air when servicing a vehicle. Professional repair shops are required to have refrigerant recovery machines. The machine must be hooked up to a vehicle BEFORE repairs are made to suck any residual refrigerant out of the system so that the vapors do not escape into the atmosphere when the A/C system is opened up to replace a component. The logic for doing this is to prevent older refrigerants such as R-12 that contain ozone depleting CFC compounds from getting into the atmosphere. It makes sense and is a good thing to do. But the EPA rules also applied to R-134a, which does not contain any CFCs and are not an ozone depleting threat. However, the rationale for also requiring R-134a to be recovered rather than vented is that it is a global warming gas, and therefore contributes to climate change. The EPA rules also require recovery of R-1234yf, but the rationale is less clear because R1234yf is neither an ozone depleting gas nor a global greenhouse gas.

Obviously a DIYer has no access to a refrigerant recovery machine so the issue of whether or not is acceptable to vent refrigerant when repairing an A/C system is moot. People just do it anyway. Besides, if your A/C system has a leak, chances are most or all of the refrigerant has already leaked out so there is nothing left to vent.

UPDATE: As of March 2020, the EPA has revised its venting and recovery rules.

    How Does Freon Work

Within your cars air conditioner unit there is an intricate system of compressors and coils. The unit compresses the R-22 gas and makes it incredibly hot. This highly heated gas is then pushed through the coils in the unit. This cools the gas down and changes its state to liquid.

Once the freon is a liquid, it is able to absorb heat from the ambient air. At the same time, cool air is pushed out through the system. The air conditioning unit works in a cycle where the hot air is drawn in and the cool air is expelled.

Without the presence of freon or another refrigerant, the air conditioning unit cannot function correctly. If the refrigerant levels decline too much due to a leak, the air conditioner cannot work at all.

If you are concerned about your refrigerant levels dropping as a result of a leak, it is worth taking your car to a qualified mechanic. They will be able to look over the system for any evidence of a leak and fix it before more refrigerant is added.

It is very unwise to add additional freon to a leaking system as this can cause serious environmental damage.

When To Recharge Your Cars Ac

In case you start noticing that your cars AC isnt cooling the vehicle as efficiently as it used to, you might want to check if the level of refrigerant is below the normal level.

However, you should keep in mind that this happens rarely, and you may not have to recharge the AC system even after years of frequent use.

Clogged filters, leakage, or damaged components are the most common reasons why the AC system starts to malfunction. In some cases, the old refrigerant needs to be vacuumed out of the system before you start refilling it with a new refrigerant.

How Often Does A Car A/c Need To Be Recharged

How to Add Freon to a Car and Manually Engage AC Compressor Clutch

If your air conditioning is functioning as it should, the refrigerant in your vehicle shouldn’t leak. Though small leaks may occur over time, they are usually not enough to impact A/C performance. For this reason, there is normally not a maintenance or service schedule for recharging your air conditioning system. The best way to tell if it is time for an A/C recharge is to pay attention to your system’s performance. If it feels like your vehicle isn’t blowing as cold as it used to or has stopped blowing cold completely, it might be time to schedule your appointment for an A/C recharge service.

How Do I Know If My Car Ac Needs Recharging

In order to know when your car AC needs to be recharge, these are three most significant signs:

    Air Conditioner Clutch wont Engage

Usually when the air conditioner reaches its maximum capacity, the clutch engaging starts to click and drivers can hear it very well. The reason for this is that the clutch engages with the AC pressure switchs signal in order to read the level of system pressure. For this purpose, when AC reaches low level, the pressure switch cannot activate, leading to no clutch engaging. This problem stops the system from circulating.

    Cooling capability Decreases

One of the most famous symptoms that tells you the automobiles needs recharging is that the overall cooling capability dramatically drops. Why is this a clear signal? Since the system of air conditioning works by circulating a pressurized refrigerant, if the air is not blowing cold air at all, you need to charge your AC fast.

    Signs of Refrigerant Leaks

Last but not least, there will be signs of refrigerant leakage. There will be greasy film on many AC fittings or components underneath the automobiles. If there is any, this might be a sign that you need to recharge your AC.

    Air Conditioner Loss Cooling Capability

If you notice that your cars air conditioner has blown cold air, but now its blowing warm air or not cool enough as it should be, this is occurring for low Freon in the car.

This is the most obvious symptom that a vehicle needs to be recharged. The low-level Freon can affect the operation of your vehicle system.

So, you should notice the lack of Freon before it brings a huge problem in a car.

Don’t Miss: Why Does My Ac Not Work In My Car

    Ac Clutch Not Engaging

If you have set your air conditioning unit to the coldest setting, you should hear a clicking noise as the clutch engages. This is due to a signal that is sent from the air conditioning pressure switch.

When the pressure level inside the air conditioning system drops to a level which is too low, the switch will not work and the clutch will not engage. This means that the air conditioning system cannot circulate any cool air and it will not function.

Locating The Low Pressure Side Service Port

    (1) new old stock R12 Genuine Refrigerant 12oz can Auto AC Air ...

The first step in the charging process is to locate the low side system service port which is fitted onto the larger of the two refrigerant lines. This line will be one of two which travel out from evaporator core and will lead to the rear of the compressor. You may have to look around a little as these locations will vary and can be obscure on some vehicles.

The low side pressure port will have a smaller fitting than the high side port which will be larger so the kit connector valve will not fit onto it.

In the image below you can see the high side pressure line is always smaller than the low side pressure line. The low side service fitting is equipped with a hard rubber ball valve which the recharge kit connector pushes downward to open and service the system.

Once you have located the low side port twist the cap counterclockwise to remove it. The top of the cap should have an O ring which will seal it to the fitting. If when you remove the cap you hear a leak this valve is bad which can be fixed by simply replacing the cap firmly or replacing the valve once the system is empty, this is not too common.

    Loss Of Cooling Ability

If you notice your air conditioning system functioning at a lesser quality than you are accustomed to, this could be a sign that the system needs to be recharged.

The air conditioning unit works by circulating pressurized refrigerant, such as freon. When the levels of refrigerant are too reduced, the air conditioning system will not function correctly. This may present as the air not blowing out at all, or the system blowing out warm air.
