Where To Find The Vin Number On A Car

History Of The Bodywork Number

What is my Vehicle’s VIN Number and Where Do I Find It?

VINs were first used in 1954 in the United States. From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats.

In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States standardized the format. It required all on-road vehicles sold to contain a 17-character VIN, which does not include the letters O , I , and Q .

After the introduction of the ISO norm, the manufacturers which produced vehicles for the American market very quickly adjusted to this standard. The ISO introduced recommendations for applying the VIN standard and its structure, and the bodywork number was also used in Europe. However, the sets of information contained in it were introduced gradually. For example, Volkswagen started to encode bigger chunks of information during 1995-1997, and the control digit during 2009-2015 for selected models from the group. The VIN control digit is also used, although not in all brand-models. In the European vehicles, it can be found e.g. in Audi A1.

There are at least four competing standards used to calculate the VIN.

  • FMVSS 115, Part 565: Used in United States and Canada
  • ISO 3779: Used in Europe and many other parts of the world
  • SAE J853: Very similar to the ISO standard
  • ADR 61/2 used in Australia, referring to ISO 3779 and 3780

How To Decode A Vin

Once you have the 17-character VIN, use it to run a free VIN check online with the VIN decoder at websites, including the NHTSA’s site. Automakers supply the information to the US Department of Transportation and traffic safety agency.

The federal government website provides recall lookups by VINs. This search tool can bring up safety recalls conducted over the past 15 calendar years, safety recalls that motorcycle and major light auto manufacturers have issued, as well as safety recalls that have not been completed on that specific vehicle. At the NHTSA’s website, type in VINs for access to safety information and recalls regarding vehicles, car seats, tires, and airbags.

Pre-1981 vehicles typically have 11-character codes and reveal less information. While these can be useful to determine the sequence of when the car was made and if it would’ve been equipped with a particular engine or other options, these usually will not provide a complete history of the vehicle.

How To Find The Vehicle’s Vin Number

On most passenger cars, you may find the VIN number on the front of the dashboard on the driver’s side. The best way to see it is to look through the windshield from outside the car. You may also find the VIN number on the driver’s side door pillar. Open the door and look around the area where the door latches to the car. A motorcycle’s VIN is usually on the steering neck below the handlebars, although sometimes it’s on the motor or on the frame near the motor. A semitrailer’s VIN is located on the front part of the semitrailer on the left side.

If you can’t find the VIN number on the vehicle, you should also be able to locate it on your vehicle’s title or liability insurance documents.

Each manufacturer uses their own labeling system, but the place of the code within the VIN number is fixed. What is important is the model year code. Depending on the manufacturer, it may denote the production date, marketing year or vehicle brand type. In this case the year 1980 is coded as A. The following years are marked with subsequent letters of the alphabet and the year 2000 is denoted by the letter Y. Digits from 1 to 9 were used between 2001 and 2009. After 2009, the alphabetic coding was used again, and so the year 2009 is A and 2021 M. According to the ISO standard, the letters Q, U and Z are not used. This means that the letter code for 2000 is Y, while for 2001 it is already 1 and not Z.
