The Difference Between Drying And Curing

How Long Should a Auto Body Paint Job Take You?

For you to have a clear understanding of paint drying, this article will also delve into the difference between drying and curing, which is often confused for the same thing.

When automotive paint is dried, it feels soft to touch. That softness would diminish when residual moisture in the paint evaporates from the surface and the paint starts to harden, which is the process called curing.

Car paint cure time usually takes 24 hours. And only after a car is cured would it be safe to drive on the road.

Analyzing The Automotive Painting Process In The Factory

If we want to successfully perform any surface tratment repairing process, we must first understand how the manufacturer is applying the coats and prepairing the piece/vehicle in order to achieve its final result.

Lets see in a brief video the several steps taken into account:

Basically, the body is washed, degreased, electrodipped in zinc phosphate, oven baked, sanded, sealed, dried, cleaned , primered, baked, painted, baked, clear coated, baked and then inspected for faults . All high volume manufacturers have fully automated lines that take between 14-18 hours to finish a single body.

Even if the paint process may be different among manufacturer & sectors, the main process looks something like this:

The result is layers of carefully laid out coats, all of which put together is only slightly thicker than the average human hair.

Cathodic e-coating gives the car body a primer coat. It protects the car from corrosion , especially the cavities of the body that cannot be reached easily by spray application.Primer: evens out any irregularities of the underlying layer. It can be sanded easily and provides a smooth surface.

Basecoat: gives the main color to the piece, therefore it plays a significant role in establishing the final visual impression.

Clearcoat: seals everything else and is applied last. It protects the car from external elements like snow, UV radiation, dirt, etc

Do I Need To Sand My Car

You will notice that some areas will state that you need to sand your vehicle. This is true. You will find that the painting process has much more detail than you initially thought. You will have the car or truck sanded before you even begin to prime it.

It will use fine sandpaper to ensure that the metal or plastic underneath is not damaged. You need to do this to ensure that the paint sticks to the vehicle. If you painted over your existing paint, it would look poor.

If you’re getting the whole car painted, then well the whole car has to be sanded. If I remember correctly your car is black? If you’re going black again then I’m sure if your paint guy is going to do a great job the prep time is most of that 3 weeks. With black paint more than anything else, the bodywork has to be perfect if you want the finish to be perfect after the paint is on.

If you notice those imperfections after the paint has dried, use sandpaper to remove paint. You will likely want to add multiple coats of paint to achieve a clean finish, but you must allow at least six hours in between each coat. If these steps seem daunting but you have a small budget, consider a basic paint job done by a professional.

How To Dry A Car Paint Fast

If you want to dry car paint quickly, follow the given tips.

Always apply a thin layer of paint on your already painted car

If you are giving a touchup to your car, make sure you apply a thin layer of paint, whether youd need a single coat or double coat. It is because thin paints take less time to dry and cure.

Further, no car paints come in a thin consistency. Thus, youd mix any recommended solvent to the paint to improve its consistency without affecting its durability or other aspects.

    Good ventilation is a must

The better the airflow around the car, the quicker the paint will dry.

That is, ensure proper ventilation around your recently painted car.

For this, ensure the place youve parked your car has sufficient windows or fans installed to accelerate the drying process.

    Increase the temperature

Another quick way to dry the car paint is by increasing the temperature around the car.

As the temperature increases, it will fasten the drying process without affecting its characteristics. If its not feasible naturally, you can turn a heater around the car and leave it for around 30-50 minutes.

Lower the humidity in the air

Do you find it difficult to dry your clothes when the air is humid? The same goes with your car with a fresh coating of paint.

Humidity in the air lowers the reaction rate and evaporation of the solvents from the paint. Due to this, every paint usually takes more time to dry in case the air is humid.
