How Does Indycar Push To Pass Work
While F1 cars use the DRS system to improve overtaking, Indy cars use the push to pass system which was introduced in 2009. The system enabled drivers to boost the power of the car by up to 40BHP. But there were limitations on the number of uses of the system.
In 2017, the governing body changed the rules to enable drivers to use the system for a maximum of 200 seconds during a race. This enabled drivers to pull out of an overtaking manoeuvre on any given lap. This would save the precious seconds for another overtaking attempt later in the race.
F1 2021 Regulation Research
To address this overtaking problem and the future of Formula 1, the first thing the commercial rights holder, Liberty Media, did was bring together Pat Symonds and Ross Brawn. Together they assembled an aerodynamic group including Nikolas Tombazis, Dominic Harlow and Jason Sommerville to name a few. These engineers then conducted an in depth aerodynamic study which involved correlating their CFD, as well as analysing different concepts for 2021. CAD models were regularly sent to the teams, nine of which contributed to the CFD research. F1 analysed these results, compared them with their own and then advised the FIA on how to write the regulations. With the regulations announced last October, the role of this aerodynamic group is to now try and find the loopholes in these new rules to make them as robust as possible.
How Much Horsepower Do F1 Cars Have
Every year, F1 engines change. There are certain restrictions that every engine manufacturer needs to meet when producing an engine for their F1 car. However, racing teams spend millions of dollars every year trying to improve their engines within those limits. The best way to determine how much raw power an engine has is to look at its horsepower.
For the 2021 F1 season, it has been stated that the engines have approximately 1050 HP. Some of that power is stored in the electrical unit. While the car generates speed and power, the energy gets stored in this unit. That then gets used during the race when the drivers need a little boost or extra power to slow the car down. It is not the same as DRS but similar.
It is important to note that the engines horsepower does not equate to the raw performance of a car. There are many things to factor in that can contribute to the general performance of Formula One cars.
It is best to think of the best cars when using those numbers because each engine is different. So, we know that the most potent engines belong to Mercedes and Red Bull racing even though Red Bull uses a Honda engine.
Now, we need to put this horsepower into perspective. Lets use a list of cars for this:

The Ability To Stay Close And Overtake
One of the ways the new regulations should promote more exciting racing is the fact that adjustments have been made to reduce the dirty air that currently comes off the cars.
There has been a lot of work on the phenomenon called the ground effect, which will reduce the dirty air sent back to the cars behind.
This will allow chasing cars to stay closer to those in front and, ultimately, they’ll be in better positions for overtaking.
How Much Has The Engine Technology Evolved In These Cars Since 2011
Theyve changed completely. The engine of 2011 was a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre V8 that revved to 18,000 rpm and weighed at least 95kg.
It included early hybrid technology with the KERS unit, which harvested kinetic energy from the car under braking. This gave the driver an additional 80hp for 6.7 seconds per lap, which he could deploy when needed. KERS boosted the engines peak power output to around 815hp.
Fast-forward to present day and an F1 cars source of power is remarkably different. Since the introduction of hybrid regulations in 2014, the sport has used turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 Power Units which hit the scales at 145kg and rev up to 15,000 rpm.
Peak power is considerably higher with todays PUs producing well over 100 hp more than those in 2011 while being way more efficient at the same time. An F1 Power Unit in 2020 achieves a thermal efficiency the amount of fuel energy converted into useful work of more than 50 percent, compared to around 30 percent in 2011.
The increase in power, the higher efficiency and the higher weight are largely down to the sophisticated hybrid system used in F1 today made up of the Energy Store , Control Electronics and two sources of additional power, the Motor Generator Unit Kinetic , generating power from brake energy, and the Motor Generator Unit Heat , producing power from the exhaust gases.

Most F1 drivers weigh between 75 and 65 kg. The heaviest driver appears to be Antonio Giovinazzi , while the lightest driver is Yuki Tsunoda . Weight is very important in F1, so ideally, drivers weigh less than 80kg to avoid adding extra weight.

What Does This All Mean In Terms Of Lap Times
In 2011, Sebastian Vettel took pole position for Red Bull at the Turkish GP with a 1:25.049. We expect that the 2020 cars with their increased power and higher downforce, will be around four seconds quicker in Qualifying trim.
And while the session format itself hasnt changed much since 2011, some of the rules and technology around Qualifying has.
For example, Vettels lap time at Istanbul Park in 2011 was set with unlimited DRS use, whereas today there are only two designated DRS zones at the track.

What Are The Other Components And Regulations Of A Formula One Race
The steering wheel of a Formula 1 car is a very complex component. It consists of various buttons, paddles, thumbwheels and dials. The brake system of the car consists of composite carbon fibre brake discs. A hydraulic calliper squeezes both the front and the rear brakes with assistance from the energy recovery system of the power unit.
Pirelli is chosen as the sole supplier of tyres for Formula 1 cars. Pirelli offers five different compounds for dry tracks over a season. The team can choose any three compounds depending on the condition of the track, and during a race, two different compounds must be used for at least one lap between pit stops. An intermediate compound can be used on slightly wet tracks and a wet weather compound on tracks when it is pouring down. The minimum weight of a Formula 1 car has to be 740 kg with the driver in the car but without fuel. Cars used to weigh much below before 2014. Cars are weighed with dry tyres fitted on the car. To achieve this weight cars use a ballast. The ballast can be placed anywhere to adjust the weight distribution of the car.

Due to the increased downforce levels, the iconic Turn 8 will be less of a focus than before. It was pretty much flat-out in the 2011 cars, but it will become even less of a challenge in these 2020 machines. So, teams dont need to compromise the setup so much for it.
Unlike some of the other unfamiliar races on the 2020 F1 schedule, we do actually have some historical data for the Turkish Grand Prix. However, because the cars have changed so much and the track has recently been resurfaced, the historic data is only useful as a reference.

How Much Does A Rally Car Weigh
The FIA World Rally Championship has its own rules. You may be surprised, but despite the fact that these drivers cannot start without a co-driver, the minimum weight of the WRC car is only 1,190 kg and 1,350 kg with a crew! Slightly more than DTM cars and still lighter than Nascar. However, entering the new hybrid era will change the rules. So it is predicted that this weight will increase by more than 100 kg for WRC Rally1 cars in 2022.
F1 2021 Suspension Wheels And Tyres
The move to 18inch wheels and tyres was announced earlier this year, which will have a huge impact on performance. Not only does this allow for a larger brake disc, but the suspension will have to be completely redesigned.
With an 18 inch tyre you have less volume of air inside it, so you have a different pressure increase which modifies the footprint, explains Mario Isola, Head of Car Racing at Pirelli Motorsport. The tyre is a lot more reactive, and more precise and teams will need to redesign the suspension because the sidewall of the tyre is a lot less compared to now. We are also increasing the external diameter, so this will influence the aerodynamics and dont forget that the interaction between the brake and the rim is very important, not only for heat exchange but also for the airflows that are in this area.
Of course, with the wheel rims now standardised, teams will have less opportunity to explore F1 Rim Heating to help manage tyre temperatures.
There was talk of banning tyre blankets, but Tombazis confirmed that these will still be used throughout 2021 and 2022. Although, costs will be reduced by decreasing temperatures as well as the number of tyre blankets available to the teams.
