How to: Change your car’s air-conditioner filter (Easy!)

Put the assembly together in the reverse order that you used to take it apart. Before you do, though, take a quick look at the new filter.

You’ll note that there two metal shafts coming off the filter where the hoses attach. They have little nubs or ridges near the ends. Make sure to slide the rubberized lines onto the filter as far past the nubs as you can get them.

Also, pay special attention to the clamps on either end of the filter. Position them between the nubs and the body of the filter. Then get them snugged down good and tight , to prevent leakage.

Dirty Air Filter: How To Check And When To Change

If your vehicle gets 36 mpg, youll burn one gallon of fuel on the average daily drive of an American, along with some 9,000 gallons of air, enough to fill a 12 x 20-foot pool to five feet. That air isnt just air, however. Theres dust, pollen, insects, sand, dirt and even bits of rubber. The engine air filter keeps this stuff from damaging the engine, and a dirty air filter is a sign its actually doing its job.

When Should You Have Your Air Filter Changed

Most car manufacturers recommend that air filters be changed every year or after 12,000 miles, whichever might come first.

Of course, if you are using your car more often or for longer trips, you can expect the air filter to accumulate dirt and particulates more quickly. Moreover, if you live in a busy city or a dusty area, then doing it more often makes more sense. Another good suggestion is to have the air filter changed every time you go for an oil change. Once you are informed, then you can go and change it yourself. Before doing so, make sure you check the manual of your car to know the specifications of the air filter required for your car.

You should also watch out for signs that your air filter should be replaced.

  • Your Gas Mileage Has Decreased
  • Problems With Ignition

Dirty air filters affect the engines emission control system. Afterward, the spark plugs are blocked and the sparking is also disturbed. This manifests in problems with ignition and when you are trying to start your car, it will tend to roll over sluggishly. In this case, you should have the air filter checked.

The Simple Steps For Changing Your Air Filter

The truth is, it only takes five steps to changing the air filter of your car and once you are used to it, you will only need a minute.

  • Buy A New Filter
  • Air filters are quite cheap, costing about $10 or a little bit more. You can buy them at an auto parts store or even at a big supermarket. You just need to find out which to get for your car, either by reading your car manual or referring to the stores list of air filters. They will most likely list which kind is appropriate based on the cars model and year. You can also choose to buy more than 1 and have them on stock at home for the next air filter change.

  • Open The Hood And Find The Air Filter Box
  • The air filter box or simply air box is not that difficult to find. It is normally a black plastic box either on top of or on the side of the engine. It should also have a huge hose sticking out on the side.

  • Remove The Dirty Air Filter
  • Opening the air filter box is easy, as you only need to remove the metal clips holding the cover down. You need to then just take the old filter.

  • Check The Filter
  • You can do a visual inspection on the status of the old air filter. A sign that it needs to be replaced is the color. If it is gray, then it is time to replace it. If you also look inside the folds and see a lot of dirt on it, it means it is no longer letting a lot of clean air inside.

Why Do You Need To Change Your Air Filter Regularly

Increased fuel efficiency. After logging thousands of miles on your car, that filter can get really dirty and clogged. A dirty air filter doesnt allow air to get through to the engine. Remember, your engine needs air to run efficiently. A reduced amount of air means your engine needs to use more fuel to get the same bang to run your engine. Save yourself some money at the pump. Change your air filter regularly.

Prolonged engine life. Engines are big and powerful, but they can be surprisingly sensitive to the smallest grain of sand. Over time, dirt and other particles can cause serious damage to your engines internal parts. Better to spend $10 now on a new air filter than thousands of dollars later on a new engine.

Reduced Emissions. Reduced air flow can also mess with your cars emission control systems causing you to spew more bad stuff into the atmosphere. Men need polar bears to wrestle. Save one by changing your air filter.

How To: Change Your Vehicle’s Cabin Air Filter

The air filter in your car is a key component of the supply system of your Toyota. As the vehicles lungs, it prevents impurities from entering the engine and provides a steady flow of clean air. But when should you change the air filter? And why?

Why do you have to replace the air filter in your car?

When the air filter in your car gets clogged or worn out, this affects the quality and quantity of the air going into your engine. The dirty air obstructs the combustion chambers and prevents proper fuel combustion. The engine has to work harder, which leads to a decrease in gas mileage and engine performance. Just as your lungs can get clogged up from pollutants in the air, your cars engine suffers when the air it breathes isnt clean. Thats why changing the air filter is so important.

An air filter in poor condition causes the internal ducts of the engine to deteriorate, which affects how fast your car can go, in addition to making your exhaust smoke blacker and thicker. This could result in you having a series of problems on your hands: excessive fuel consumption, harmful emissions, even engine failure.

Your Toyota has two air filters: one for the engine and another for the cabin. Its important to change both of them regularlyboth for engine performance and your own health. You dont want your engine absorbing air thats full of dust and debris.

There are some tasks necessary for your car that you can easily accomplish. In fact, once you have done it yourself, you will wonder why you need to pay top dollar for someone else to do so.

The only thing you need to do is to buy the new air filter yourself. Unlike other tasks, like an oil change, the job is pretty straightforward once you have the only necessary item to finish it.

No Cabin Filter Add An Air Purifier

If your car isnt equipped with a cabin air filter, youre not out of luck-you can still add an ion purifier. Ion purifiers generate billions of negatively charged ions that attach to viruses, bacteria, dust and pollen. The particles are then attracted to positively charged surfaces like your plastic dashboard. Once they settle, its just a matter of using a spray cleaner on all the hard surfaces to wipe away the pollutants.

Can Replacing a Cabin Filter on a Regular Interval Help to Extend the ...

For the typical homeowner, changing air conditioner filters is one of the easiest AC maintenance tasks you can perform. And, its an important facet of routine heating and cooling system maintenance because a clean filter can help keep your system running efficiently and reliably for years.

As a part of your heating and air conditioning system, the air filter plays two main roles:

    • Removal of airborne particles from the air that you breathe to improve indoor air quality
    • Keeping internal components free from dust and debris to maintain efficiency and reliability of operation

A dirty filter can cause a number of issues with your system. It can restrict air flow, which not only affects your comfort, but can lead to your systems air handler working harder than normal. Over time, that can cause unnecessary wear and tear on system components. In more extreme cases a clogged filter can lead to the system turning on and off many times in rapid succession or even shut down completely.

To avoid these issues, be sure to inspect, clean or replace your AC filter regularly as a part of your air conditioner maintenance routine. If you do, you can help keep your system running smoothly and efficiently, and hopefully avoid an unnecessary service call from your local HVAC technician. And, once it becomes a habit, youll find that changing an air conditioner filter is an easy, low-cost way to maintain your comfort and hopefully save a little money down the road.
