Test Your Solar Car Battery Charger

How to Charge a Car Battery | DIY Car Repairs

To test my solar car charger, I simply took the solar charger outside and put the panel in direct sunlight.

Then I looked at the PV current display on my charge controller. It read 0.2 amps, meaning my solar panel was in fact charging my 12V battery.

It works!

Technically my solar car battery charger is done. I can just leave the panel out in the sun and the charge controller will cut off the charging when the battery is full.

Thats right this solar 12V battery charger has auto cut-off built right in. Pretty cool.

If I want to solar charge the battery while its in my car, I can just put the solar panel and charge controller on the hood of my car.

But I decided to take it one step further

How Many Amps Is Your Battery

No, were not talking about cold-cranking amps here. Were talking about how long your battery can put out one amp of power without any charging. Most automotive batteries are 48 amps.

While your car doesnt use an amp per hour, this is still the most effective way to determine how long it will take to charge your battery. Thats because the manufacturers make battery chargers in the same way. It makes answering the question of how long to charge a car battery easy.

If youre using a 1-amp charger and your battery is completely dead , it will take 48 hours. However, if youre using a 2-amp charger, it will take 24 hours. Each amp that the manufacturer rates the charger for will restore one amp in the battery per hour.

However, it is essential to note that this also depends on the battery. If it has a bad cell or cannot hold a charge due to calcification, youll need to have the battery on the charger longer to have any chance of bringing it back.

The Causes Of A Failing Car Battery Charge

Now that you know how to charge a car battery with a couple of different methods. So we can look at a few reasons why a charge might not work. First, the most common reason why charging a battery might not work is that you might not have had the charging cables connected all the way. Make sure to connect the cables completely before walking away or else you might come back to a battery that still hasnt changed. Along with this make sure the charger is plugged in all the way and on.

The next reason why a charge might fail is that the terminals on the battery may be dirty. Clean off any corrosion from the terminals before charging.

Lastly, the battery might be too old to charge. If the battery is old, test it to see if it can even hold a charge. If it cant, then there is no point in trying to charge it and instead, you will need to replace it.

Why A Car Charger Is Not Recommended For A Marine Deep Cycle Battery

When you are charging a deep cycle battery it is always best to use a charger designed specifically for that purpose.

Thats because these chargers will typically employ multi-stage charging, which is faster, more efficient, and isnt going to result in a dangerous overcharging incident that could destroy your battery.

With a car charger, depending on how it is rated, you run into potential problems such as trickle charging settings being too low to be of much use or the big problem, the risk of overcharging.

See our Buyers guide here

Since you are using a charger that is not designed for a deep cycle battery you would have to watch and consistently check the voltage throughout the charging process.

If you were to hook up your battery to a car charger and leave it overnight, the results could even be disastrous without a voltage-regulation feature there to stop it when its fully charged.

Since your deep cycle battery uses a suspension of electrolytes in distilled water, if this gets dried up the plate can get damaged and void your warranty.

Proceed with caution.

What Charges A Car Battery

Galleon

There are two ways to charge a car battery: with the alternator, or with an external charger. Under normal circumstances, the alternator charges the battery whenever the engine is running. When a battery dies, then an external charger is the best way to charge it back up.

This is why most normal battery usage, like running the radio or dome lights while the engine if off, is replenished naturally the next time you start your car. As the RPM of the engine increase, the alternators ability to generate electricity also increases, and any power that isnt being used by accessories like your headlights is available to charge the battery.

The flip side of this is that, in some cases, your alternator may not be able to supply enough power to run all of your accessories. For instance, if you have your air conditioning, wipers, headlights, radio, and other accessories on when youre idling at a stoplight, it’s possible to create a load that’s larger than your alternator can handle. When this happens, power stored in the battery will pick up the slack.

How Long Does It Take To Charge A Car Battery

Battery charging times can vary from make and model, and can differ depending on the batteries amps and charger that youre using. High speed charging is usually 6-10amps, whereas low speed charging is typically 2-3amps which is usual for a gradual overnight charge.

We recommend that you opt for a slower charge to prevent the risk of the battery plates becoming buckled.

Charge A Car Battery With A Wall Outlet Using A Home Inverter

Using a home inverter to charge up your car battery isnt a very well known method and required some more equipment you shouldnt use this method frequently you can use it once in a while

Inverters are the electrical device that used to convert alternate current that provided from a wall outlet to the direct current that is supported by car battery here is how to apply this method

Step 1: The first thing the inverter should be disconnected from the power supply before setting up connections, connect the negative port of the battery to the black wire of the inverter, and the positive port should be connected to the red port of the positive port of the inverter

Step 2: double-check the connections and make sure that it is as above, then plug the inverter into the power outlet.

Step 3: the high power supply that coming from inverters may charge the battery from 1.5 to 3 hours, this easy method should only be used when you are in a hurry.

How To Jump A Car Battery

Be sure all accessories are off and the lights, including the interior light, are off. If you have anything on, it could cause the battery to arc while you are working with it.

Once you get down to the battery, remove the negative or ground cable first. This is always the black cable unless someone replaced the cables with the wrong colors. If you look on the top of the battery, you can see which is which the ground cable will have a negative sign and the power or positive cable will have a plus sign.

Clean the battery terminals with a terminal cleaning brush and a mixture of baking soda and water to neutralize the battery acid. If the battery terminals and posts have a lot of acid buildup, wear eye protection and a mask so the airborne corrosion does not contact your eyes, nose and mouth. Dont touch your face until after youve washed your hands.

If the battery has removable caps, carefully pry the caps off and check the level of the water. If any of the cells looks low, add distilled water only and take care to not overfill the battery. Most batteries today are maintenance-free so you wont be able to open them to check the acid level.

Can I Charge My Car By Jump Starting It

How to Charge a Car Battery

If your battery is dead because your alternator isnt working correctly, you might be thinking that you can just leave it hooked up to another vehicle with jumper cables and let it get charged up a bit in that way.

The short answer is, dont do it. Yes, it will work, but with all of the electronics jam-packed into todays cars, leaving your running vehicle hooked up via jumper cables to another vehicle is a recipe for disaster.

You can easily short the electronics out, leading to hundreds of dollars in repairs. It might be a nuisance having to replace the battery where the vehicle is located, but its going to end up saving you a ton of money in repairs down the road.

Finally, if your vehicle does have a bad alternator, dont try to drive it to the shop. Without being charged, your battery will run out of power as youre driving down the road, and this will kill your engine.

Instead of being stranded in a parking lot or driveway, youll be stranded on the side of the road and need a tow truck to get you to where you were trying to go.

Charging A Car Battery

When the alternator isnt up to the task, or when the battery is drained to the point where it isn’t capable of starting the engine, the other way of charging a car battery is to use an external charger.

Car battery chargers run off AC power and provide 12V DC at relatively low voltages, which is the best way to charge a completely dead battery. Charging a dead battery with an excessively high voltage can increase the off-gassing of hydrogen, which can, in turn, result in a hazardous situation where the battery might explode.

This is why its important to take the same care when hooking up a car battery charger as you would when hooking up jumper cables, and also why it’s often a good idea to use a trickle charger.

    Trickle Charger For Car Battery

A trickle charger is very important for car batteries to maintain the charge on a car battery when the car is not being driven. It keeps the battery from being drained by the cars electrical system and keeps it charged so it is ready to start the car when needed.

When you leave your car for long periods of time you may find a dead battery. The battery discharge of a car battery is even higher than for idle batteries as the cars electrical system which includes Alarms and lights continues to issue the batterys charge.

So for a car battery not only does it need a maintainer but to be regularly topped off against this discharge.

To use a trickle charger with a car battery, you will need to connect the charger to the battery using the proper connectors. Once the charger is connected, you will need to turn on the charger and let it run until the battery is fully charged.

    Consider a Solar Trickle Charger

A solar trickle charger is a small solar panel designed to provide a small charge to keep your battery topped off. A solar trickle charger is really easy to use and anyone can use it. It is also convenient as it only requires power from the sun. This means that you can use it from anywhere.

Solar chargers have been specialized with 12v connectors that include alligator clips, cigarette lighter connectors, and o-ring terminals that can be easily connected to the battery and charge your batteries.

Remove The Negative/ground Cable Then Positive

How to Charge Your Car Battery

Having confirmed that all power is off, you can begin to remove the negative or ground cable for your cars battery. Its almost always a black cable marked with a – symbol. The positive cable will be red and display a + symbol.

Your battery may also have plastic caps over its terminals that must be pried free for you to remove the cables. If these caps are present, remove them if necessary to access the terminals.

Use a socket wrench to loosen the negative cable, then carefully pull it away from the battery. Ensure that the negative cable is situated far from the positive cable to prevent a charge from transferring between the two sources.

Youll need to repeat the removal process for the positive cable and terminal. Move the positive cable away from the negative terminal for the same reasons described above.

What Is A Linear Battery Charger

The linear battery charger is the simplest charger you can get. It enables you to recharge your cars battery via the plug-in at a wall socket.

It requires little set-up and power but the charger operates at a low amperage meaning it can take a long time to charge your battery and, depending on the amperage, it could take up to 12 hours to fully charge the battery.

The linear battery charger runs at a continuous charge, and doesnt have a controller to stop the charging when the battery is at full power so there is always a danger that you may overcharge your battery and damage it.

    Cool Down The Battery

Not many people pay attention to this when they are in a rush to charge their car batteries. However, you must always check for heat in the battery before charging.

Your battery can easily get hot in warmer weather if your car is parked under direct sunlight. In other cases, your car battery tends to overheat when it works extensively.

Its not safe to charge it in this condition. You need to cool down the battery first.
