How To Check Car Owner

Can Companies See Current Keeper Information

I Am Trying to Find Car Owner by Registration Number – Car Owner Check

If they pay for it yes, but its tightly regulated. And only for the same reasons above, for example if they are a parking charge firm , and they need to view your details to send you a fine or invoice by post.

The DVLA makes a lot of money from giving out driver details. Each time one of these requests is made, the DVLA charges them.

FreeCarCheck and other similar vehicle check services do not have full access to all the previous keeper history information from the DVLA as we are not a parking charge firm. All we can tell you is the number of previous keepers. But we do offer many other used vehicle checks too, for a one-off price.

Transferring A Title From A Deceased Owner

In most cases, when a vehicle owner dies, the surviving spouse, or, if no spouse, the next closest kin may transfer the vehicle into their name, if the estate isnt already probated.

If the current title is in both your name and the deceased’s name with the legend “Full Rights To Survivor” printed on it, then all that is needed to transfer the vehicle into just your name is the title and a copy of the death certificate.

If the vehicle is being transferred to the surviving spouse or an immediate family member, the license plate may remain on the vehicle.

  • Vehicle is probated

If the deceased owners estate is probated, the probated owner must visit a Secretary of State office and provide:

  • The original vehicle title, signed by the executor or administrator of the deceaseds estate
  • Letter of Authority from the executor or administrator of the deceaseds estate
  • A certified copy of the death certificate for the deceased
  • Proof of Michigan No-Fault insurance
  • Their valid drivers license or ID
  • The original vehicle title
  • A certified copy of the death certificate for the deceased
  • Certification from the Heir to a Vehicle form completed by the next-of-kin.
  • Valid drivers licenses or IDs for all next-of-kin
  • Proof of Michigan No-Fault insurance
  • How To Find Who Owns A Car By Vin

To find out who owns a car by VIN , or vehicle identification number, you will need the complete VIN. The vehicle identification number is a 17 digit alpha-numeric code that describes all the specific vehicle information and each VIN is unique to one specific car, just like the license plate number. You can go through the same channels as the license plate search as long as you have a legitimate reason to perform this car owner search.

Notifying The Authorities To Find The Owner Of A Car From An Accident

  • 1 Particularly if you witnessed any kind of accident, illegal behavior, or if your car was the victim of a hit-and-run incident, you should not attempt to locate the other driver on your own. Your best option is to notify the police with whatever information you can provide. If possible, you should try to provide them with:
  • The make and model of the car.
  • The cars Vehicle Identification Number . If you have an opportunity to get close enough to the car, you can find the VIN on most cars by looking through the windshield at the bottom corner of the dashboard on the drivers side.
  • The license plate number.
  • Any particular distinguishing features, such as unusual accessories, paint job, or damage to the car.
  • 2Check with your insurance company. Your insurance company has resources available that you may not. If you are filing a claim, or even just investigating the possibility of a future claim, the insurance company may be able to identify the owner of the other car.Advertisement
  • 3Contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles or your country’s corresponding agency. If you can provide the Registry of Motor Vehicles with the license plate or VIN for a car, they will be able to use that information to identify the owner. They will probably not be allowed to give that information to you directly, but depending on why you need the information, they may be able to provide the information to some other appropriate person .

What are the myths about car ownership?

Note, the registered keeper is not necessarily the individual who owns the car. From a legal stance, the owner is the person who paid for the vehicle. DVLA logbook holds personal details about the motorist who is responsible for safety and the legal roadworthiness.

When looking at a V5 logbook and checking the number of previous owners notice the car has one, two, three, four or more previous owners.

  • Hire A Private Investigator

If the third-party tools outlined above or DMV dont do the trick, consider hiring a private investigator. Professional private investigators with proper credentials have proper access to DMV or other critical public records and can efficiently give you information according to your needs. They usually charge an hourly rate for service, so the cost can be relatively high.

Simply Google a licensed investigator in your area. Someone local is always better. When you find one, do some investigation by checking their license status or reading the reviews online to avoid potential scammers.

Hopefully this post helped you find out the registered owner of a vehicle with ease. Have more questions or suggestions? Feel free to leave a comment and well be glad to get back to you.

My husband is looking for his 1972Dodge charger. We have the paper work when he purchased it and the VIN # is WP292G199038. It is very clear on the paperwork. It is not faded or distorted in any way. He looked up the Dodge Vin #\s for 1970\s and it states that this is all the numbers it has as the VIN #. Can you advise where to look or how to look and find this vehicle?

Since this is an older vehicle, with fewer than 17 digits on the VIN, it will not be in our database. That being said, you might consider running a Carfax report or contacting the DMV. The DMV will need a valid reason to run a VIN check on Dodge ChargerDodge ChargerDodge Charger and the Carfax report will cost you $39.99
