How To Prevent Car Sickness in Dogs

To determine whether your dogs dislike of car rides is due to car sickness or travel anxiety, its best to start with a conversation and visit with your vet. This can help to rule out any underlying medical issues that could be mimicking the signs of motion sickness and/or travel anxiety . If theres an underlying medical condition, youll want to begin by addressing that.

If there isnt an underlying medical condition, the conversation and visit with your veterinarian will also provide you with an important opportunity to discuss possible medication and/or supplement options to best help your dog. There are some great options available, so be sure to talk to your veterinarian, as your dog doesnt need to live with or just get over their car sickness or travel anxiety.

It can sometimes be difficult to determine whether a dog is dealing with motion sickness or travel anxiety, or both. In these cases, its a bit of trial-and-error. Typically, your best bet is to treat for possible car sickness while also taking steps to help your dog feel more comfortable riding in the car. If your dogs signs are due exclusively, or even primarily to motion sickness, you should notice an improvement in your dogs signs rather quickly, once an effective treatment for motion sickness has been started.

What Can You Do

  • Give your child a light snack before the trip. Hunger pains seem to add to the symptoms. Avoid acidic foods, including fruit juice and carbonated beverages. Good food to eat includes oatmeal, bread and bananas
  • Try to focus your childs attention away from their queasy feeling. Listen to the radio, talk or sing
  • Have her look outside the car not at books or games that can lead her to focus her vision on one area of the car
  • If nothing works, remover her from the car and have her lie on her back for a few minutes. A cool cloth on the head may also help.

Massage Your Pressure Points

Although theres conflicting evidence whether acupressure provides motion sickness relief, its worth a shot, even if its a placebo effect.

Acupressure is based on the traditional Chinese medicine practice of acupuncture. Its believed that applying pressure to certain parts of the body can help relieve muscle tension and improve circulation.

To relieve car sickness using acupressure:

  • Locate pressure point P-6 by holding one hand with your palm facing up.
  • Place three fingers across your wrist below the wrist crease. The pressure point is located below your index finger.
  • Place your thumb below the index finger between the two large tendons.
  • Apply firm pressure in a circular motion to this point for 2 to 3 minutes. You may feel a deep, aching sensation, but it shouldnt feel painful.

    No Food Before The Ride

How I deal with car sickness in my kids

This rule can help ease the symptoms of motion sickness in puppies. That doesnt mean that your dog should be hungry the whole day before the drive, but their last meal should be a couple of hours earlier.

For example, if the drive is planned for early in the morning, give your pooch a very small portion of food instead of a full one, or get up earlier to feed and take out your dog a couple of hours before the ride.

Offer your dog plenty of water, take them out for a bathroom break just before the ride, and prepare some more water for the road, especially if its a longer trip. Water can help to sooth irritated stomach in dogs and help with motion sickness.

    Why Puppies Feel Car Sickness

The most common reason is the same motion sickness that we also feel sometimes. Puppies are not used to riding in a car, and it will be a brand new experience for your pet. A moving vehicle will affect a dog’s inner ear and disrupt their sense of stability.

Additionally, parts of a dog’s ear which are in charge of balance are not completely developed in young dogs, and they will be more sensitive to a car riding experience.

The feeling of dizziness when the car is moving is not unusual for a dog. The weird feeling in the stomach can also accompany this. And it will be even more emphasized if your puppy have just eaten before the car ride.

Car anxiety may be another cause. Most pet owners put their puppy in a car for the very first time when taking the dog to the vet or vaccination. Since these are discomforting or painful experiences, a dog will start associating car rides with something negative. You will notice if car anxiety is the cause of puppy car sickness if your pup starts whining in a car or tries to get out of it in fear.

Pay attention to your puppys behavior when the car starts moving. The dog who feels car sickness will start whining anxiously, they will be in a bad mood or seem afraid. Intense and excessive drooling is one of the most common signs, and dont be surprised if the dog even vomits all over your car seat.

First Some Things You Should Know About Carsickness:

Carsickness tends to happen in children more than adults, which is no surprise given that young kids cant see past the seats in front of them. A childs inner ears may sense the motion of the car, but their eyes, focused on a book or digital screen in front of them, may not. Their body is sitting still, but their inner ears are telling the brain theres movement, sending conflicting information to the brain that can cause motion sicknessnausea, vomiting, cold sweats and more.

Whats not easy to explain is why some kidseven in the same family and under the same conditionsmay get motion sickness and some may not. The good news is, regardless of whether you know for sure if youre kids will become car sick, you can take steps to prevent this motion sickness.

    Nutrition And Dietary Supplements

A comprehensive treatment plan to treat motion sickness may include a range of complementary and alternative therapies. Ask your team of health care providers about the best ways to incorporate these therapies into your overall treatment plan. Always tell your provider about the herbs and supplements you are using or considering using.

Following these nutritional tips may help reduce symptoms:

    • Avoid spicy, greasy, or fatty meals.
    • DO NOT overeat before traveling.
    • Drink plenty of water.
    • Dry crackers and carbonated sodas help some people avoid nausea.
    • People who tend to have motion sickness may want to eat small, frequent meals.

What Else Can I Do To Avoid Car Sickness

Other steps could also help minimize the chances of experiencing car sickness. For instance, if you feel very sick in the car, you can lie down and focus on something else. Similarly, as Cleveland Clinic suggests, breathing in some soothing herbs, such as ginger, lavender, or mint, can prevent nausea. In addition to that, you can put ginger or peppermint flavored candy in your mouth to avoid feeling sick.

Drinking plenty of water before starting your journey could also be very helpful, as hydration will always make you feel fresh. You may want to avoid smoking or drinking alcohol before travelling if you’re prone to motion sickness. Cleveland Clinic also recommends people wear acupressure wristbands, as certain pressure points in the body can also help manage this condition. By following these simple steps, you can make your car-travelling experience much more pleasant.

While it may be impossible to prevent all cases of motion sickness, the following tips can help you prevent or lessen the severity of motion sickness:

  • Watch your consumption of foods, drinks, and alcohol before and during travel. Avoid excessive alcohol and foods or liquids that “do not agree with you” or make you feel unusually full. Heavy, spicy, or fat-rich foods may worsen motion sickness in some people.
  • Avoiding strong food odors may also help prevent nausea.
  • Try to choose a seat where you will experience the least motion. The middle of an airplane over the wing is the calmest area of an airplane. On a ship, those in lower level cabins near the center of a ship generally experience less motion than passengers in higher or outer cabins.
  • Do not sit facing backwards from your direction of travel.
  • Sit in the front seat of a car.
  • Do not read while traveling if you are prone to motion sickness.
  • When traveling by car or boat, it can sometimes help to keep your gaze fixed on the horizon or on a fixed point.
  • Open a vent or source of fresh air if possible.
  • Isolate yourself from others who may be suffering from motion sickness. Hearing others talk about motion sickness or seeing others becoming ill can sometimes make you feel ill yourself.

How Can I Prevent Motion Sickness In My Cat

Desensitizing or counter-conditioning cats to car travel may take some work, but it can be accomplished. Helping your cat overcome the stress and anxiety of travel will mean that your cat can accompany you on trips more frequently and will allow you to spend more time together.

“Desensitizing or counter-conditioning cats to car travel may take some work, but it can be accomplished.”

The first step in reducing your cats stress and anxiety associated with car travel is to make her more comfortable in her carrier. Start by teaching your cat that the carrier is a safe place in your home. This can be done by offering food and treats in the carrier. You can also place the carrier in your cats favorite sleeping area with her preferred bedding. Placing the carrier on your cats favorite chair or even bed can help your cat become more comfortable with going in and around the carrier.

Using Feliway® inside the carrier during training can help reduce stress.

Once your cat is comfortable with her carrier, you can begin conditioning your cat to ride comfortably in your car.

“The best way to ease your cats travel anxiety is by taking several short trips before embarking on a long haul.”

Here are additional tips to make your cats travel more enjoyable and reduce motion sickness:

Use a carrier. Anxious cats can both hurt themselves and cause accidents. A carrier is often viewed as a safe place for many cats.

    Press On This Pressure Point

According to traditional Chinese medicine, pressing on an acupressure point called “pericardium 6,” “P6,” or “Nei-guan” may relieve nausea. The point is located on the inner side of the forearm, about two inches above the crease of the wrist in between the two tendons.

There has been very little research on the effectiveness of acupressure for motion sickness but early research, which has focused on postoperative nausea and vomiting, suggests that acupressure may ease nausea.

You can press on the point using the index finger of your opposite hand. Alternatively, acupressure wristbands, often marketed as “sea bands”, are said to stimulate the point. The bands are worn on the forearm and typically have a plastic button or bead that places pressure on the P6 point. The person wearing the band can also press the bead for additional stimulation. Acupressure bands typically cost less than $10 for a pair and can be found online or in some health food stores.

Dr Chris Brown Q& A: How to Stop Car Sickness in Dogs?

Many of the signs and symptoms of car sickness are the same as travel anxiety, so it can be tough to determine exactly which one your dog is experiencing. Plus, some dogs are unlucky enough to be dealing with both. After all, if your dog feels sick every time they ride in the car, its certainly likely that theyd also be anxious about going for car rides and that their anxiety about car rides would increase with each ride.

The most common signs and symptoms of car sickness in dogs are:

    • Drooling
    • Vomiting

    Start With Short Trips

Pick a fun location for your pet thats close to home, like a dog park. Make sure its no more than a ten-minute drive. Bring someone with you to sit with your pet and keep him calm. Once you arrive, play with your dog and do everything you can to make the visit extra enjoyable. Have your dogs riding partner keep the pooch calm on the way home.

After arriving home, play with your dog again, allow rest, and then reward him with treats. Repeat this a couple of times, and your dog will begin to associate going out for a ride with a good time.
