Cleaning up mold can be difficult, messy, and the process of cleaning mold out of an air conditioner is dependent on the type of unit. Car AC units, window units, and central AC units differ greatly regarding the resources needed to eradicate them of mold. Regardless of what you are cleaning, the area where you perform the clean-up should be well-ventilated, and you should wear non-porous gloves and a face mask with goggles, especially if you are sensitive to mold. Mold can be wiped up with a household cleaner and a cloth or sponge. Bleach is not needed to remove mold. If mold has grown on a porous surface such as wood, plaster, carpet or upholstery, you will probably not be able to get rid of all the mold. The moldy item or section will need to removed, thrown away and replaced.

Window unit: By the time you see small mold spots forming on the air direction vanes or grate of your window air conditioner, it is probably too late. The mold you see is just the tip of the iceberg. You can disassemble the unit and try to clean mold from the internal air ducts, coils, evaporators and other parts, but there is always a chance you will miss some and the mold will simply grow back. A moldy window unit likely needs to be replaced.

Mold In Air Conditioners

Mold can grow in many areas in your home, particularly where it is dark and humid. So it should come as no surprise that air conditioners are one of the places where mold can be found. Unfortunately, AC units represent a particularly risky place for mold to grow, since they push air through the house.

This means that a moldy air conditioner will actually blow microscopic mold spores into the air you breathe, spreading the spores throughout the rest of your home. Since mold presents multiple health risks, its important to prevent mold from developing in your air conditioner, and to eradicate it if it does appear.

This article covers the sources of mold growth in vehicles AC system, high humidity storage, spills, leaks, and design malfunctions and how to prevent them.

I go into detail on the four methods used to clean the HVAC system out, as well as methods to clean mold and cross-contamination in the vehicle as a whole.

The AC is usually the most difficult area in the vehicle to manage microbial growth. While there are certain makes and models of vehicles where this is more of an issue, to some degree its a problem in all vehicles due to the inherent design of the AC system.

How Mold Grows In Air Conditioners

Mold spores are everywhere. Unfortunately, it is impossible to get rid of all the mold spores in your house, and even if you did, more would come in every time you opened a door or window. When spores grow into mold, more spores are released, and these higher concentrations of spores are what cause the health problems associated with mold. Thus, the key is to prevent the mold from growing in the first place.

Mold needs two things in order to grow: moisture and an organic food source. Moisture can come from high humidity, or a leak or spill that is not cleaned up properly. Condenser and evaporator coils are the main contributors to condensation, and therefore have potential for water leakage if not properly drained. The food source can be the surface the mold is growing on, like wood or carpet, or organic particles found in dust, if there is enough of it.

Under most circumstances, air conditioners and HVAC ducts are not hospitable places for mold to grow. Sheet metal ducts and styrofoam channels inside window units do not offer mold a food source. However, dust often collects in these places, which can allow mold to grow.

Getting Rid Of Damp And Mould

How to get rid of Mold in Car Air Conditioner?
The Problem

When you switch on the air conditioning in your car, instead of getting clean smelling, cool air, there is the smell of dampness and mould.

Things to Check

If you have already made sure that all the mechanical components of the air conditioner are working well, the source of the damp smell could actually come about because the air conditioner is working too efficiently.

In Singapore’s humid atmosphere, the cold air conditioned air does tend to cause a lot of condensation, especially within the ducts that channel the air to the face-level air vents on the dashboard. This happens more on rainy days and while driving at night as the sun isn’t around to cause this moisture to evaporate. After a while, the moisture will accumulate and sometimes mould will form, causing all the air that is blown across it to carry the smell into the passenger compartment.

How To Get Rid Of Car Air Conditioner Odor

Odor is a normal characteristic of automotive air conditioners. However, the odor’s intensity can be reduced significantly by identifying and eliminating its root cause. An unpleasant odor emanating from the dash vents is commonly caused by mice or other small animals nesting in the air box — which requires removing the nest from the inside of the duct or blower motor area — or it can be caused by mold and bacteria growing on or around the air conditioner’s evaporator core.

How Longdoes It Take Mold To Grow In A Car

Not longat all. In fact, mold has the opportunity to grow faster in a car than in abuilding. Why? Because cars are sealed up and lack ventilation. They might alsobe a lot warmer than your home or office. Stagnant air +heat + moisture makesit very easy for mold spores to flourish.

Mold can grow in a car in about 12 hours given the right conditions. Often times you will get that mildew smell in 6-10 hours.

  • Move the unit to a space where you can clean it without cross-contaminating your house

  • If the filter is disposable, throw it out
  • If the filter is not disposable:
  • remove all debris and visible mold
  • fully submerge the filter in a mix of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water
  • let soak for at least 10 minutes
  • rinse
  • air dry
  • Use a wet/dry vac to remove all debris from the interior of the unit

One product that can be purchased is a spray can with a long hose to reach through the vents and kill the mold and bacteria. This is the easiest method but not always the most effective. Other products are available, but they may require access to the evaporator core by either removing the blower motor, removing the blower resistor or by drilling a hole in the duct near the evaporator. If you buy the kit, follow the step-by-step manufacturer’s instructions. These products typically use a chemical cleaner that is sprayed onto the evaporator and allowed to dry. Getting Rid Of MUSTY SMELL From Home Air Conditioner

Mold is a type of fungus. Like all living organisms, fungi require three things to grow: oxygen, water and organic matter. Since air conditioners circulate air and the cooling coils tend to create condensation, the first two criteria for mold growth are bound to be present in an air conditioner.

Air conditioners and ductwork also provide the dark spaces where mold can thrive. Add some organic materialwhich can simply be dust and other debrisand you have all the conditions for mold to grow.

If there is an odd, moldy smell that kicks in as soon as you turn your air conditioning on, you don’t have to close your nose and bear it. More likely than not, you’ve built up some mold and mildew thanks to moisture in your AC system. This moisture occurs naturally, and is part of the car, but if left for too long it can create mold. As air pumps past the evaporator and into the car, it picks up mold spores, which feed on the moisture. Luckily, they are easy to clean, and your car will smell good as new.
