Hammering Out The Dent With A Mallet

Aluminum garage doors are known for their malleability. With the help of a local technician, you can erase small indentations by tapping sections back into place. A professional may use the following steps to repair your dented garage door panel:

  • Wash the dented surface with soap and water.
  • Locate a wood block and mallet.
  • Move to the opposite side of the indentation.
  • Place the wood block over the dent.
  • Tap the section with a mallet until it sits flush with surrounding panels.
  • Deep dents may require the use of fine grit sandpaper and auto body filler for smooth results. Your local experts will discuss your options for exterior paint coats after the surface is dry.

The Average Paintless Dent Repair Cost

The cost of repairing your dent depends on the factors listed above in the assessment process. A dent that is more complex will take more time to repair and cost more than a simple dent repair. A dent that is more difficult to repair because the area behind the dent cannot be accessed easily will also take the technician more time to repair and cost more.

Another thing to take into account is the quantity of dents on your vehicle. A roof with hail damage and 30 dents will also be more expensive to repair than a single door ding. Regardless, it is difficult to ballpark exactly what it will cost to repair your dent. No two dents are alike so it is hard to compare!

Regardless of the cost, paintless dent repair is always going to be cheaper than the traditional dent repair process, and it is better for the environment too. Because we do not need to use body fillers, to repaint, or use harmful chemicals with the paintless dent repair process, we dont have an adverse impact on the environment, and we save you money. Repairing deeper dents and creases can be done with a hammer and a dolly. You can buy sets of these off Amazon for about $30.

First, though, if it’s a bumper you’re best to remove it. They’re all bolted on. Just find the bolts, unbolt it and take it to a workbench where you can repair it. Much easier than lying on your back on the ground underneath your car trying to do this.

Hammer out the dent as best you can. If you’ve got a crease you’d be doing a great job to pull that out perfectly. You’re more than likely going to have to put some body filler on it, sand it down, spray some primer on it, and then some top coat same as your car color.

    Hair Dryer And Compressed Air

If the dent is in a plastic area that you cannot remove and dont have access to the reverse side of the dent, then this method is for you. Much like the boiling water method this one uses heat to remove the dent, however it uses the cold air from the can of compressed air instead of physical force to pop the dent out.

Type of dent: any plastic piece ranging from small to medium. Can be effective on larger dents but you may need more than one person doing these steps at the same time to resolve the issue.

Tip: have more than one can of compressed air on hand as this doesnt always work the first time.

Technique: using a hair dryer, apply heat to the surface of the dent using the hottest setting. The heat will cause the material to expand which you may or may not be able to see. Heat the dent for 3-5 minutes, then immediately use the can of compressed air to rapidly cool the surface. POP. The dent should pop out thanks to the snap of cold air you have applied. You may need to do this more than once to see results.

    Compressed Air

We recommend using the brand Dust Off for compressed air cans. You can buy these either as a single can, a set of two, or as a four pack using the links below.

Door Dings Are A Common Cause Of Small Dents

Weve all done it before. Either you accidentally parked a bit too close to another vehicle, or they did at the grocery store. While youre trying to put your groceries away inside the cab of your vehicle or get inside, you accidentally bump the door of another vehicle. In most cases, vehicles have side trim and other things to protect the actual body panels from sustaining damage, In some cases, vehicles do not have them and end up with a nasty dent on the side.

Door dings have a pretty distinctive shape to them. Most doors have a round outer edge that comes into contact with a body panel on your vehicle and will impact your vehicle with a swinging motion. The result is a sort of egg or crescent-shaped dent that will also sometimes have a ridge or mild crease on the inside.

In terms of the repairability of door dings, the same rules apply as a small dent repair from a collision. There is often some impact scratching on the surface from the other door coming into contact with your vehicle and sometimes even a trace of other paint left behind. So long as the paint has not cracked, there isnt any severe creasing in the dent, and the area behind the dent can be accessed, door dings can be repaired with paintless dent repair.

Do You Know What To Do When Someone Dings Your Car Door And How To Get Them Or Their Insurance Company To Pay For Repairs

How to remove this dent from my car

Several months ago, a client asked me to come to his work location in San Ramon to fix a large door ding his wifes sporty black Scion. His insurance company had recommended me as a preferred provider, and I was able to repair the ugly dent quickly, flawlessly, and at no cost to the client.

I thought I would share this story to illustrate what what to do when someone dings your car door so that you may not have to pay out of pocket for repairs.

This particular client had been to dinner in San Ramon with his wife after work. They finished their dinner and returned to the car, where the client immediately spotted a sizeable ding in the passenger side door that he knew had not been there when he closed the car door to go into the restaurant. There was a small streak of white paint in the ding, which clearly showed against the shiny black paint of the Scion.

The client then looked at the white mini van parked next to his car. He remembered that the van was parked in a spot that had been empty when he had parked his wifes car. He noticed that the van was parked hapharzadly, at an angle, and crossing the line into his parking spot, leaving little room for the vans passenger door to open.

It was obvious to the client that the mini vans occupants were responsible for the door ding in the otherwise showroom-condition Scion. So he began taking photos of the dent, the vans position relative to the Scion, and the vans license platejust in case.

How to Remove Small Dents and Dings From Car Using A Hair Dryer and Canned Air

There are a few ways you can go about this.

  • The first thing you can try is a common household plumber’s plunger. They come in various widths, so measure the diameter of your dent and match it up to a plunger that will cover that sized dent. Best to use grease around the rubber lip that you’ll be pressing onto the dent, but soapy water may be as good. Apply the greased plunger over the top of the dent and then press the plunger in so that the plunger’s squashed flat and has no air left in it. Then slowly pull it out. If it’s a light enough car dent, you’ll simply vacuum the dent out. You might have to have a few goes at this.
  • If that doesn’t work, then the next thing to use to try to extract your dent is a large rubber mallet. By super-careful with the mallet, and just tap gently to begin with, as if you put too much force into your blows you’ll end up with the dent protruding in the other direction.
  • If you don’t have a rubber mallet. the next thing you can try is a piece of timber with the end about the same size as the dent. But wrap the end of the piece of timber with a large piece of cloth. Make sure there are no sharp edges on the timber before attempting this. You can then quietly tap the end of the piece of timber with a hammer until the dent pops out.
  • One thing you can never use is a hammer directly on the dent. You’ll just end up with a whole lot of little dents within the dent. Believe me, that looks a lot uglier than the original dent.
