What Is A Load Test And How Do I Perform One
A battery load test is a kind of battery test that involves measuring the amperes produced by a charged battery. Cold cranking amps is the term used to describe the batterys power.
Performing a load test helps determine if your battery is capable of powering the starter motor.
To perform a successful load test, youre going to need a battery load tester.
You can pick a load tester up for about $20.
Heres how you use it:
- Step 1 Begin by fully charging the battery. You need to do this to ensure you get an accurate result. You can use a battery charger if you have one on hand. Use your multimeter to check if your battery voltage is the same as whats indicated on the battery label.
- Step 2 Then, make sure your multimeter is set to measure voltage and connect it to the battery. If the voltage reading is lower than 10% of whats on the label, youll need to charge the battery before doing a load test.
- Step 3 Now, you need to disconnect the multimeter from the battery.
- Step 4 Examine the battery label again, this time looking for its ampere rating. You should notice a CCA followed by a number. This number indicates the cold cranking amps. Take that number and halve it to get to the figure for your load test. For example, if your CCA is 500, then 250 is the figure youll need.
- Step 5 Connect the load testers sensors to each battery terminal, making sure to connect positive to the batterys positive terminal and negative to the negative battery terminal.

Testing Car Battery Without Multimeter
If you dont have a multimeter, you wont be able to accurately check your car batterys voltage. However, there are still steps you can take to check the battery condition.
With the car turned off, turn your headlights on. Then, have a friend start the car-making sure its in park and the brake is on. Watch the headlights as the engine turns over. If they lose brightness while the engine is starting, there may not be enough charge in your battery. Take it to a service center for further testing.
How To Check The Status Of Your Battery Terminals
Loose, corroded and otherwise dirty battery makes it difficult for a car to start, if not impossible. This is also one of the most common reasons why batteries suddenly go dead. However this is a problem that is easy to spot if you have a voltmeter or better yet, a multimeter.
In the following steps you will take a look at the battery terminals and check for signs of voltage drops.
Step 1. Turn the ignition system off
There are two ways to do this. The first is to remove or relay the fuel pump fuse. The second is to disconnect the ignition coil. Either of the two methods will prevent the engine from running.
Step 2. Connect the probes with the battery terminals
Similar to the steps earlier, touch the red probe of your multimeter to the positive battery post. Touch the black probe onto the battery posts cable terminal.
Step 3. Start the engine
Turn the engine on and read the multimeter display. If the meter reads 0.5 V it means the battery terminals and post need to be checked and possibly cleaned.
Step 4. Check the other battery terminal
Get your multimeter black probe and make contact with the battery posts negative part. Now get the red probe and let that make contact with the cable terminal linked to the same battery post. This is the same as in the previous step, only the probes have been reversed.
Step 5. Turn the car engine on
Turn the car engine on and read the multimeter display. If it reads 0.5 volts, clean the battery and look for signs of damage.

Using A Car Battery Tester
Youll need a car battery testing tool called a multimeter in order to check your car battery voltage. This tool is an inexpensive and helpful addition to your garage. Once you have this tool, checking your car battery is pretty simple.
How To Test A Car Battery Without A Multimeter
Testing your car battery with a multimeter is the easiest and most effective way to get the job done. However, if you’re in a pinch and don’t have a multimeter handy there are a couple of things you can do to check out how your battery is working as well.
Step 1: You want to start with a quick visual inspection of your battery. Make sure it’s not leaking and make sure the case itself isn’t bulging. That can happen sometimes and cause a lot of troubles. Your battery should still be a perfectly straight sided box. Check for the corrosion that we mentioned before around the terminals. If everything looks good, then you can move on.
Step 2: You can start testing your battery by turning the headlights on without turning the engine on. Leave the lights on for about 15 minutes.
Step 3: With the lights still on, crank the engine and see what happens. You might need someone in the car to help do this while you check out the headlights. You should notice a very slight dimming of the bulbs as the vehicle starts. If the headlights get extremely dim or turn off while the engine takes a bit of time to turn over, and especially if you notice any kind of then you definitely have a problem with your battery. What we’re seeing here is that your battery isn’t generating the voltage to get your car started.
Obviously, this is nowhere near as accurate as using a multimeter and can’t give you specific numbers, but it is a practical example of whether or not your battery is working for you.

Cleaning The Battery Case
You can use a simple procedure to clean the battery case. For this, you’ll need to prepare a mixture of 8 ounces of warm water and one tablespoon of baking soda. This will neutralize acid and help lift up dirt off the battery case and terminals.Put on your goggles and rubber gloves and, using a soft brush, apply the solution across the battery top and around the sides of the case. If your battery uses cell caps , don’t let the mixture seep under the caps and mix with the electrolyte inside.
Wipe the solution using a clean rag. Continue applying the cleaning solution until you see no signs of buildup.
What Causes Battery Failure
- Not driving often enough, or running electronics when the engine is not on, or otherwise depleting the battery.
- If your battery is consistently charged at less than 80%, acid stratification can occur. This means that the electrolyte collects at the bottom of the battery, causing the upper half to be acid-poor. Acid stratification reduces the batterys performance and may cause it to fail.

How To Test A Car Battery For Dead Cells
Many new car batteries are of the sealed ‘maintenance’ free variety. But some older batteries allow you to access the individual cells. The cells will either have individual caps, or a plastic cover that clips over all, or some of the cells.
The cells contain a mix of water and sulphuric acid, so you don’t really want to be messing around inside them too much.
You can buy a hydrometer-style battery tester that measures the specific gravity of the battery acid, and can tell you whether any cells are ‘dead’ or not.
However knowing a cell is ‘dead’ is of no more use to you than knowing that the battery won’t hold a charge, so a test of the resting voltage is just as effective a diagnosis.

Gather The Required Equipment
Switch off the lights and ignition of the car, and then bring out the multimeter needed. Take the black lead of the multimeter and place it on the negative cable of the battery. Afterward, place the red point on the positive wire of the cell.
Switch on the device to the DC volt setting. If you cant find it, look at the DC reading that has a line. Do not use the DC reading that has a wavy line as it works only with home appliances.
