Checking For Corrosion On The Battery Terminals

How to Use a Multimeter to Diagnose Car and Truck Electrical Problems

When it comes to car batteries, one of the most important things you can do to extend its life is to keep an eye on the terminals. This means checking for corrosion, which can prevent the battery from making a good connection and lead to decreased performance or failure. Fortunately, checking for corrosion is a pretty easy process.

How Do You Use A Multimeter On A Car

Start by setting your multimeter to 20V DC.You can connect your probes to both battery terminals, matching up each color to the same-colored terminal. If you can have someone turn the headlights on, do so now so you can get a better reading of what the car can actually handle. You’ll do this with the car turned off.

How To Use A Multimeter Part : Introduction

First, thanks for all the comments, both here and on my Facebook page, about the piece on Electrical Safety two weeks ago. I felt that, if I made it short and kept to the important stuff, people might actually read it, and apparently I was right.

As several folks pointed out, I did, however, leave out two important bits of battery safety:

  • When removing or replacing a battery, always undo the negative battery cable first, and attach it last! The reason is this: If youre undoing the negative cable, and the wrench slips and touches the body of the car, the body is already attached to the negative battery post, so the wrench isnt completing a new circuit, so no additional current will flow. In contrast, if the negative cable is still connecting the negative post to the body, and youre undoing the positive cable and the wrench slips and touches the body of the car, the wrench will complete the circuit from the positive terminal directly to ground, creating a massive and immediate short circuit that can badly burn your hand.
  • Dont set any tools down on the battery! Its tempting because its a convenient flat surface, but tools can easily create a short between the battery terminals, or between the positive terminal and the body of the car.
  • With that, lets continue our electrical series and introduce you to your new best friend: The multimeter.

  • Its a voltmeter that measures voltage.
  • Its an ohmmeter that measures resistance and continuity.

    Readings and Ranging

A multimeter is of no use to you if it can’t read what you need it to. You need a multimeter to read DC voltage, resistance, and continuity for use with automotive work. It’s also important to make sure you select the range that allows you to work as fluently as possible. You will have the option to pick multimeters with either manual or auto-ranging of certain readings. I recommend beginners go with auto-ranging as you simply select the type of reading you want without worrying about the given range the value of that reading may exist within. However, it’s not that hard to learn what range the readings you’re after exist within, and a manual ranging multimeter is a great choice for those who want to obtain readings more quickly.

    Leads

You want to take a look at both the type of lead a multimeter has to work with and how long the cables are. As for the type of leads, most multimeters come with a standard set of probes, and thats perfect for general automotive work. If you want different types of probes you must make sure that the model you are considering has them available to it. As for length, there is no universally superior choice. Some folks prefer longer cables for the extended reach, and others like the neatness of short cables. Which is right depends on your preferences and it’s something to think about while you shop around.

How To Check A Fuse With A Multimeter

A blown fuse can cause electrical issues that may be minor but can affect your driving experience. If your radio isnt turning on, your interior lights or climate control features are not working, a dead fuse may be the culprit.

Fortunately, with a multimeter you can check if your fuse is working properly. You just have to set it to your lowest ohm settings then place the probes on the fuse caps.

If a fuse is blown, then the resistance value will not change when you connect the probes. And if you get low ohm readings then your fuse is working just fine.

How To Test Automotive Wiring With A Multimeter

Automobiles contain many different types of circuits. Each circuit uses electrical wires to carry both power and signal information to other components. Over time, these wires can become damaged due to misuse, accidents and component failure. These failures can cause both short circuits and open circuits—both of which render the wires unusable. The hardest part of fixing a wire involves locating the defective one—a process with which a multimeter can help. Multimeters are designed to test different parts of a circuit to locate the problem.

    Step 1

Disconnect the wires at their corresponding components at both ends using a screwdriver. Connect a jumper wire between one wire end and the car frame. Connect the red positive probe of the multimeter to the other end of the same wire connect the multimeter’s black probe to the car frame.

    Step 2

Set the multimeter to measure resistance it should read zero resistance. If the meter reads “Open Circuit” or some other very high reading, the wire is bad and requires replacement.

    Step 3

Remove the jumper wire, and retest the wire. With the jumper wire removed, no part of the wire should contact the car frame. In this case, the meter should read “Open Circuit.” If not, a short has occurred in the wire, and it requires replacement. Repeat this process for each wire.

You will also find the main switch that has options for measurement types such as volts, amps ohms, and so on. You will find connections for the probes, sometimes up to four connections.

One is for current measurement, while there is another for measuring resistance and voltage.

There is a connection used to measure low current ranges and another that could be used for temperature probes.

The operation of a digital multimeter, itself is straightforward. Once you know how to make voltage, current, and resistance measurements, it is a matter of putting the multimeter to use. According to Best Car Audio, If the meter is new then it will be necessary to install a battery to power it.

This is simple and straightforward, and details can get found in the operating instructions for the DMM.

Checking your car stereo using a digital multimeter is very easy. Here are some steps that should help you use it with ease:

  • Switch on the multimeter
  • Fix the probes into the right connections as there may be different connections available, which could be confusing
  • Set the switch to the right measurement range and type. When you are choosing the range, make sure the highest range goes beyond what is anticipated. The range indicated on the digital multimeter may then get lowered as needed. When you choose a very high range, it will prevent the multimeter from getting overworked.

What Is A Multimeter And Why Do You Require One

A multimeter is a measurement device definitely needed in electronic devices. It integrates three crucial attributes: a voltmeter, ohmeter, and ammeter, and in some situations continuity.

The tool allows you to comprehend what is taking place in your circuits. Whenever something in your circuit isnt functioning, it will certainly help you fixing. Heres some scenarios in electronics projects that youll locate the multimeter helpful:

    • is the button on?
    • is this cable performing the electrical energy or is it broken?
    • how much current is streaming through this led?
    • just how much power do you have left on your batteries?

Current: What It Is And How To Measure It

Current is the rate at which power flows through the circuit. If youre going to measure current, youll need to plug the red probe into the Amp port, which is usually marked with an A. There could be more than one port for amps, with labels like 10A or mA.

Do It Right: Its a good idea to start with a port that can measure a larger current than what you need if you arent sure.

Select the appropriate setting for current on your multimeter.

To get a reading, youll touch both the red and black probes to component leads in a series circuit. The multimeter itself will complete the circuit, and should give you a reading of the current.

    How A Multimeter Works

Since there are thousands of wires in a car, identifying the particular one that is defective could be time-consuming and tiresome. This is where a multimeter comes in handy. It can help you find the exact wire that is causing a short circuit.

You can identify this by checking for the wire that lacks voltage. To know where the short is occurring in the wire, you will have to measure continuity.

Before using a multimeter, you should set its range and parameters depending on what you intend to measure. Always apply the parking brake before measuring anything as well.

For car owners intending to measure amperage, strictly use the fused port for your probes. The red probe is the positive one whereas the black probe is the negative one.

On the other hand, to measure the voltage of your car, use DC voltage and set it to 20V. Connect it to the component you wish to measure and take a reading.

Testing a Car Battery With a Multimeter

In the old days, the method of choice for checking a circuit was to grab the test light and start probing. While a test light has its place, many times you can actually do more damage by using a test light, especially on todays high-tech electronics. What you need is a digital multimeter, or DMM for short. This handy diagnostic tool can help you with everything from checking a battery to sorting out faulty sensors and ignition coils. Heres how to use a digital multimeter when working on your car.

    How To Use An Ohmmeter

Resistance is measures in ohms, hence the tester name of ohmmeter. Resistance is a property of a material that makes it harder for current to pass through. It’s like when your garden hose is clogged-up in dirt, making it harder for water to come out.

All materials have some level of resistance to electricity. Rubber has a high resistance, which is why it’s used to insulate wires. Copper has very little resistance, and that is why copper wires are used to transfer electricity.

The DIY emergency modem power supply uses a diode as reverse polarity protection. A diode is like a water check valve: it allows current to pass through in one direction and blocks current if it tries to pass through in the opposite direction.

The markings on the diode are indiscernible. The ohmmeter can tell if the diode is orientated properly.

The ohmmeter is reading zero. That means this orientation of the diode provides zero resistance when the current is flowing from the wire that the black test probe is touching.

If the test probes are reversed, the ohmmeter reads around 2.4 megohms . This means this orientation will block current from passing through the circuit.

Aside from diodes, one of the most common things to measure with an ohmmeter will of course be a resistor. Unlike a diode, a resistor will block current for whichever orientation you use your test probe. In the image below, the resistor has a resistance of 465 ohms.

How to Test a Car Battery with a Multimeter

Many modern cars come with this device called a voltage stabilizer. Its main purpose is to give a stable voltage supply to the audio system, lights and other equipment. So its better to test stabilizer first before testing the malfunctioning element in the car to make sure about power supply. Sometimes you may receive false errors or alarms on the car screen, in that case, check stabilizer output first before testing instruments one by one.

To check voltage stabilizer turn on multimeter and set its range to 20v dc. Now connect both probes of meter to stabilizer output terminals respectively. The meter should get a reading of plus minus 10 volts. If you get a significantly lower reading then it may indicate a possible fault within the stabilizer.

Locating & Preparing Your Vehicles Battery

Before you begin make sure your vehicle has been at rest for at least one hour before testing your battery This gives you the resting voltage of the battery, rather than what could be a false reading after the battery has been in recent use. Testing your battery first thing in the morning, before using your vehicle for the day, is ideal.

Most car batteries are located in the hood of the car, near the engine block, though some models of vehicle have the battery located in the trunk, underneath the floorboard. Once the battery has been located it may have an additional plastic hood on the top that can be removed to access the battery underneath.\

There should be two terminals on top of the battery, one labeled positive and one labeled negative . There may be a pair of small plastic sheathes covering the terminals These will need to be removed prior to testing.

Once the terminals have been exposed take caution, as the battery is very much live and can cause shock and injury if touched. Of particular note: Never let an object bridge the two terminals, as this can lead to a dead battery at best and a literal explosion at worst. Work with care and attentiveness, and make sure to keep metal tools and jewelry away from the battery terminals.

    Learning Electronics Is Logical

In conclusion, purchasing an automotive digital multimeter is a great investment for all levels of mechanics. Spending $300 plus on a full-blown fluke meter might not be right for everybody.

When it comes to using the meters, its a situation where practice makes perfect. The more you use it the more you become familiar with the settings and the tools capabilities. The interesting thing about automotive electronics is that the theory and principles are based on logic.
