Is Turo Car Rental Legit

Don't Miss

So Who Should Use Turo Instead Of A Traditional Car Rental Company

WATCH THIS before you book a TURO car rental – Our first time using Turo!

Anyone who wants to drive a fun car.

Want to try out a Tesla? Theyve got those. Drive with the top down in a Porsche Boxster ? You might find that, too along with many other choices, depending on the market youre in. Just want something a step up from a Kia? It might not cost as much as you think. Since everything is privately listed, you never know what you might find.

Turo might also be a good solution during special events anytime when regular rental cars are sold out or prices are sky-high. Some private owners might be smart enough to raise their Turo rates as well, but Im guessing a lot will totally forget, leaving you an opportunity to pay normal rates during periods of extra demand.

Should You Be Concerned

Theres every reason NOT to be concerned when it comes to Turo. The majority of issues that happen when people transact between one another has a lot to do with both parties not being punctual with the reporting they are supposed to do.

In addition, individuals sometimes dont read the fine print of what is covered and is not, what time frame people have to resolve issues, and who to get in touch with.

If you want to rent, find out ALL the details about how much coverage you are getting with your insurance plan, how many miles you can drive, what the host wants from you before you return the vehicle and so forth.

As a host, in the event something happens, follow up with Turo ASAP. Message, photo and video documentation of any issues can speed up resolution processes.

How Much Can You Make With Turo

That is the real question, isnt it? Of course its also that hardest to answer offhand. That said Turo does offer a helpful Carculator that can generate some estimates based on your cars make, model, and location. While the number of cities you can choose from for that last step are limited, you can also select US Average or Canada Average if you fall outside one of the specific markets.

Being curious about what our vehicle could fetch, when I originally wrote this review in 2019, I entered the info for our 2010 Ford Focus and chose the US Average for location. At the time, Turo estimated that we could rent our car for a rate of $33 a day and book it more than 15 days a month. That would mean monthly net earnings of $380 or $25 a day. On top of that, if we were to offer delivery on the vehicle, those figures rise to 17 days of bookings for a net of $428 a month.

Obviously there are plenty of other factors that will determine how much you can earn with Turo that arent accounted for in this tool. For example things like demand are factored in when using the US Average option. Furthermore, regardless of your location, your rental availability will also surely have an impact on your earnings. Nevertheless it is interesting to get a rough rental day rate from Turo, as this could be the main factor in whether or not its worth it to try listing your car.

Is Turo Legit? Renting Your Car On Turo

Turo is profitable. You can earn up to $500 a month if you have one car. That figure jumps to $3000 if you have three cars or more. The app works best for people that have inexpensive cars. The average car costs anywhere between $25 and $150 a day to rent. Expensive models cost far more than that. The vehicle protection plan you choose will affect your earnings. Turo keeps 10 to 35% of the money the customer pays and the rest goes to the host.

Documentation Through The Turo App

Most frequent travelers know the rule of thumb with rental cars is to photograph the cars starting condition so youre not charged later for any pre-existing damage.

Turo is no exception and actually builds in a spot to upload starting and ending photographs within the app so there are no disputes later. In addition to taking photos of the car itself exterior and interior youll want photos of the starting/ending fuel, and the starting/ending mileage. Most cars have a mileage cap associated with them, although for my 4-day rental, a 750-mile allowance was more than adequate for me.

Unlike traditional rental cars, which are usually pretty new and in very good condition, my private rental was a 2014 model year. This was fine by me but it meant the car had normal wear and tear from several years of use. Since I wasnt sure how picky the owner would be, I took pictures of every little scratch or dent to make sure I wouldnt be liable things I wouldnt give a second thought to if I was booking with my regular preferred companies.

For documenting before drop-off, I knew it would be easier to take my final photos before I arrived at the airport curb. I ended up taking a bunch of pictures at a gas station a mile or two from the airport when I stopped to fill up before turning the car in. I uploaded a copy of my final gas receipt too, just in case.

How Does Turo Insurance Work For Listing

In Canada, you can obtain insurance coverage through Turo in 4 provinces: Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Coverage is available through a partnership between Turo and Intact Financial Services and includes up to $2,000,000 of liability protection. I should note that you do need to get permission from your personal insurance provider to list your car with Turo, even though the Turo plan is in place. If you dont, you are at risk of being dropped by your personal insurance provider.

If you live outside of the four provinces I mentioned, Turos coverage is not available, meaning you would have to purchase your own commercial vehicle rental insurance. Because its more costly than personal coverage, it makes listing through Turo less viable. Hopefully, over time, Turo will be expanded to all Canadian provinces.

Turo Promo Code And Discounts

Unfortunately, Turo has discontinued their new user discounts, referral discounts and other promo codes for 2021. As you may be aware, theres a severe shortage of rental cars through traditional avenues and Turo knows that means their own service is also in high demand. I hope that changes again in the futurein the meantime, I wasted a lot of time trying old, invalid codes in hopes that one would work

Theres always a chance that your renter could make a mess. What happens when your car is returned and theres mustard smashed into the seat, or worse, the car stinks of cigarettes?

Simple.

The guest pays for any and all cleanup costs.

  • Moderate Cleaning: $50. Dirt on the cars exterior, food or dirt that needs vacuuming, light or sticky stains, ect.

A Guide For Turo Hosts

Turo is like an AirBnb, but for cars. Thats a simple way to put it.

The company has two sides to its operations. Theres the host and the renter. In between those two, you have Turos customer service that mediates questions, concerns, and issues that arise.

Hosts can rent out their vehicles if they meet a few basic requirements. The vehicle generally cant be more than 12 years old and/or have more than 130,000.

As a renter, you can rent out anything on Turo. Restrictions and additional fees apply if you are under 25 years of age. Additionally, security deposits apply to some vehicles if the host places a age restriction on their vehicle. A refundable deposit is made prior to renting. In some rare occasions, theres vehicles that are only available for 30+ years of age renters.

List Your Car And Earn

After gaining approval to list a rental car on Turo, the next step is listing the vehicle.

Enter the vehicles registration number, make, model, year, and the vehicle identification number , if applicable. Duplicate VINs arent allowed on the Turo app.

Users also need to upload at least one photo of the car, although two photos are recommended . For the best results, the site recommends using multiple pictures so that a potential renter knows what theyre getting into.

The final step is writing a detailed description of the car. The more persuasive the description, the easier itll be to attract renters.

A great Turo description should clearly state any rules , top features, perks like roadside assistance or spare charging cables for electric vehicles, and a paragraph that persuades potential renters that your car is their best bet.

Great, reasonably priced cars typically sell themselves. For older models, you may have to get a bit creative with descriptions.

Here are some of Turos top features.

Im one of those people that always thinks the grass is greener on the other side. Thats why, even after FINALLY figuring out a rental car strategy for my travels, I had to check out the new player in town. Turo car rental is a peer-to-peer car rental service essentially Airbnb for cars.

I took the plunge on my recent trip to Orange Beach to try it out, primarily out of curiosity. Most of the Turo car rental reviews Ive seen were overviews of the service, not real-life experiences. It didnt hurt that I was able to stack a $25 Turo promo code for new users with a $45 Amex offer, bringing my price down considerably!

Factor In Time To Examine The Car Before You Accept The Reservation

As I drove around in the Benz, I noticed a nauseating smell of cigarettes in the car. Reading Turo’s smoking policy, I learned I was on the hook for it because I did not immediately file a report.

Turo tells guests not to check in to a reservation if they smell cigarette smoke upon picking up a car and instead to call customer service. A representative will then cancel the trip and arrange a replacement car.

Fortunately, my host accepted the car back with the smoke odor, but he technically could have charged $50 for odor removal.
