What Does The Phrase Burning Through Paint Mean

HOW TO FIX PAINT SCRATCH ON CAR BUMPER like a PRO | Easy

If you have been in the detailing world or you have interacted with professionals in this industry, you may have heard of the phrase burning through paint.

This phrase means when a polishing machine generates so much heat that it literally burns through the paint.

Burn marks on car paint can be very unsightly. Though such occurrences are rare, you should never get too comfortable with a polishing machine.

When you polish a car surface, the objective is to correct paint without penetrating the clear coat. The clear coat is the transparent layer that safeguards the paint from impurities.

If you break the clear coat, the paint is left bare. And if the heat generated from a polisher is too strong for the clear coat, then the paint wont be a match for the heat.

Paint The Area With Multiple Coats

Apply the paint. Follow the directions listed on the product youve purchased. Remember to give it time to dry between coats. Sand the area again to ensure that the new paint is flush against the old paint. Repeat this step as needed until the color is correct and the paint is smooth across the entire area.

Clay & Decontaminate Vehicle

Most cars have a lot of iron fallout from contamination such as brake dust and construction sites. Removing this iron contamination is a must in order to move onto the next step. Using a quality iron fallout remover, spray all painted surfaces of your car in a shaded area and let it sit for a few minutes. Torque Detail Decon Soap is great at this. If you used it in the previous step, you should be set! Youll notice purple spots around the vehicle after a few minutes – this is the iron contamination breaking down. After 5 minutes or so, rinse the whole vehicle and then completely dry it off with a microfiber towel.

The next part is claying your vehicle. Now when should you clay bar a vehicle? Well, a quick test is rubbing your hand on your car’s paint . If you feel bumps, there are likely still paint contaminates and you should clay. If it feels completely smooth, you can skip the clay process.

You have to remove this embedded contamination or just like the surface dirt, it will get caught in your applicator pad, causing yet more damage to your paint. Take your clay pad and spray some clay lube on both the clay and the surface of the vehicle.

Some Of The Ways Polishers Burn Car Paint

A powerful polisher can easily burn car paint. Most manufacturers of polishers claim that their tools are risk-free, but as a smart consumer, you should never believe everything manufacturers say.

Even though there is some truth to what they say about polishers, there are instances when the polisher can burn through car paint.

Here are some of the ways on how this can happen

  • When you over polish an area with thin paint, it is easy to burn through the paint.

If your car has thin paint, you should keep off from polishers. Instead, apply the polishing compounds via hand and be very gentle.

Unlike ordinary paint, thin paint is very vulnerable. To identify if the paint on a car is thin, you will have to use a paint depth gauge.

  • Should the polishers create more heat than the clear coat can handle, it burns through the paint.

When it comes to paint correction, there should always be minimal heat as it can often lead to more problems.

As the polisher rubs on the surface of your car, friction is generated and this leads to the production of heat. Excess heat burns the paint leaving behind an ugly mark.

  • If the polishing pad gets contaminated, you will have more than burn marks to worry about.

When polishing your car, you need to keep abrasives away because should they stick to the pad, it can wreak a lot of havoc on your cars surface.

An enclosed area will keep abrasives from coming into contact with the car paint. Secondly, dont work on a particular area for too long.

Can You Remove Clear Coat Scratches

How To Correctly " Paint Touch

Fortunately, clear coat scratches tend to be the most common paint scrape on the planet, and are by far the easiest to remove.

In order to eliminate this form of paint marring, a polishing method known as paint correction must be implemented, which sounds a lot more intimidating than it actually is.

Paint correction typically involves applying a cutting/polishing compound to a surface area via the use of an electric orbital polisher and a microfiber buffing pad. As the pad circulates, the varying grades of compound cut into the clear coat, slowly polishing away the scratch, layer, after layer, after layer, until it is no longer visibly or physically detectable.

Quick Nerd Note: Due to being advertised as a quick-fix solution, liquid scratch removers are one of those hassle-free options many people gravitate toward. Unfortunately, these products dont typically last very long, and when applied in excess, a liquid scratch remover will stand out like a turd in a punch bowl.

What you’ll need:

Before you begin

Step 1 – Prepare Paint

Inspect The Depth Of The Scratch

The severity of the scratch determines how you fix it. If its a minor abrasion, which doesnt go through the clear coat to the paint underneath, it can be fixed by simply filling the gap in with a thick coat of wax. No harm done!

If the scratch reached deep down to scrape paint off and expose metal underneath, you need to proceed and paint that sucker!

Replacing Only The Peeling Clear Coat

  • 1Scrub the damaged area with 1000 grit sandpaper. Rub the sandpaper in circles, pressing firmly. Sand a little beyond the original damage, even if it means peeling away a small amount of clear coat that is still in decent condition.XResearch source
  • If the pigmented paint below the clear coat is still in good shape, dont scrub so hard that you remove it as well.
  • If the clear coat is already gone, skip this initial sanding and go straight to wet sanding and cleaning.
  • 2Wet sand the transition between your work area and the remaining clear coat. Use 2000 grit sandpaper thats been soaking in water for an hour. Smooth out the transition lines between your repair area and the surrounding clear coat. Keep the sandpaper wet by dipping it in water as needed.XResearch source

Follow this up with a solvent-based paint prep cleaner, which will either come with your chosen clear coat repair kit or be found alongside the clear coat sprays.XResearch source
  • Clean the area afterward with the solvent-based cleaner.
  • Skip this step if the paint is already scuffed up from your earlier sanding.

Best Method To Fix Chipped Paint On A Car

In order to begin discussing the many ways of repairing chips, it is necessary to first discuss the two fundamental procedures that must be followed for every kind of paint defect.

Step 1- Determining the condition of the chip

Chips on the paint of your vehicle can be categorised into three different kinds:

    • Small- Small chips do not take much space and can be fixed very easily.
    • Medium . Medium chips are bigger and need a few efforts to be fixed.
    • Big- Big chips include chips on your paint that are larger and are a bit difficult to fix as compared to small and medium chips.

Step 2- Cleaning the area around the chip

It is essential that you properly clean the surface before beginning any painting. Painting over imperfections like dirt may detract from the final look of the product and cause it to slide off, exposing the chip once again.

Using warm soap and water, wash the affected area of the vehicle before rinsing it well and dry it thoroughly afterwards.

When Is It Not A Good Idea To Fix Damaged Car Paint On Your Own

It is tempting to cut the visit to the body shop and save money doing car paint chip repairs at home. However, there are cases where this can do more harm than good. If you have any of the following, just go to a professional and DO NOT do it at home.

    • If your paint has a large number of chips on it.
    • If the paint on the car has started to peel off at multiple locations.
    • If rust is appearing under the damaged paint.
    • If the sheet metal under the paint has been exposed.

As a general principle, rust is the worst enemy of sheet metal as well as the paint of your car. If you see it, run for cover.

Now on to actual paint correction.

3 Easy Ways to Do Car Paint Scratch Repair at Home!

Now that the car has been wet-sanded with the 1,500 grit wet paper, you’ll notice that there is no shine to the paint. This is normal, and usually the point where most people think they have to spray on more clear. I wouldn’t do that to you. Let me explain how to get that shine back, better than ever. Wet-sanding a whole car is a time consuming process but the end result is well worth it. Once the whole car has been sanded and dried off, you are ready to buff it. Perhaps I should say it’s ready to be buffed. Whether or not you are ready to buff it remains to be seen. Buffing a car with new paint is trickier than it looks, especially if you’ve never done it before. If you have access to an old car or body panel , I suggest practicing on that first. Fresh paint is a lot easier to damage with a buffer than cured paint.

When you wet-sand a car that has been clear coated, it turns white as you sand. Many people expect a dark green car such as this one to be dark green when sanded, not white. The white is because you are only sanding the clear coat. The color underneath remains untouched, provided you don’t sand too far.

The car has been reassembled and wet sanded.

Deeper scratches, ones that go past the clear coat, require additional repair steps. If the chip or scratch is fairly small, you can use touch-up paint pens or brush kits, The Drive reports.

RELATED: A Few Simple Changes Can Save Your Cars Paint

To start, youll have to check what your cars paint color code is. This is usually found on a sticker in one of your door jambs, Popular Mechanics reports. Once you have your touch-up pen or brush kit, the next step is thoroughly cleaning and de-greasing the damaged area. Then, simply apply the paint as directed, and let it dry.

There are some downsides to using touch-up paint pens for car paint repair, though. For one, many dont come with a sprayable clear coat. Youll have to purchase that separately to make sure your car paint repair is protected. Secondly, as Badells Collision explains, its really best-suited for temporary repairs, especially if you dont clear-coat it.

And, as stated previously, touch-up paint only works onrelatively small scratches. What happens if, say, you hit your bumper on abrick wall accidentally?

How To Smooth Out Touch Up Paint On A Car

    May 7, 2021

Youve just fixed a little nick in your cars door with some touch up paint. It looks greatuntil you see that the touch up paint isnt quite a smooth as youd like. Weve all been there. Thick, clumpy touch up paint can plague you if you dont fix the issue. But you dont want to do more harm than good when trying to smooth out touch up paint on your car. So what do you do? Below we give you four methods that will help you smooth out touch up paint and have your car looking as good as new!

    Level And Polish The Touch

At this point, all youll have is an ugly looking blob

    That is

Until you level paint touch-up to the same plane as the original paint.

Leveling the paint repair is easily done. Use a small sanding block and 1500- to 2000-girt wet and dry sand paper.

TIP: Use a 1 by 2 rubber erasure as a sanding block.

    Why?

This will allow you to level touch-up repairs with surgical precision.

Dont forget to soak your sand paper for at least 20 to 30 minutes before use. Follow the directions.

First wet the area to be sanded. Thats how you level a paint chip.

Next, use your sanding block and sandpaper to mill the high spot.

Sand in a straight line. Go with the length of the car.

    Never in a circle!

Keep the area youre sanding well lubricated with water.

Check your work often. I recommend repeatedly drying off and visually inspecting.

    Another thing to consider:

Wet sanding will dull the paint.

But dont worry because youll use a fine-cut compound to remove sanding scratches and restore a high-gloss finish.

Dry it with a clean towel when the surface looks level. Then, inspect with your fingertips.

If you can feel a high spot that means it needs more work.

The final step is to buff out the repair.

Use a good fine-cut compound. Go with Meguiars Ultimate Compound.

Apply the compound to a clean foam applicator pad or polishing cloth.

    Heres what you do:

Rub the repair area using a short back-and-forth motion. Again, no circles.

Then, buff out with a clean microfiber towel.
