Tesla uses its own dedicated Supercharger network with more than 35,000 across the globe. But the rates can vary widely depending on region, timing, the Tesla model youre charging, and the tier you choose for your recharge speeds. Tesla offers four charging tiers. As mentioned above, under the previous version of NEM, residents typically received between 25 and 35 cents per kWh of energy they sold back to the grid, because thats what the utility companies wouldve charged. In other words, the retail price. But for utility companies, that price also includes money spent on grid hardening, infrastructure, maintenance, vegetation management, R& D, and myriad other fixed costs.

How Much Cheaper Is Charging An Electric Car Compared To Filling Up A Gas Tank
Its basically impossible to come up with an exact figure to answer this question. Setting aside the fact that there are tons of variables when discussing electric car charging, there are perhaps even more related to filling up a tank of gas like the fact that the price of gas changes every single day. In other words, take the next few paragraphs with a huge grain of salt. Were going to talk averages, and its incredibly unlikely that your figures will be the same.
According to AAA, the average price of gas on November 7, the day that this was written, was $3.804 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. Most cars have a tank between 10 and 20 gallons, so lets use 15 as a decent average, considering the fact that we were unable to find good data about the actual average gas tank size. That would make fully filling up your car cost $57.06.
In other words, if you charged your car at home, on average, it would cost $50.12 less to charge an electric car if you did so at home. If you were to charge at an Electrify America charging station as a guest, it would still cost $28.85 less than filling up an average tank of gas. Thats around half the price.

Prices Range Depending On The Station
Effective April 1, 2022, the cost to charge at BC Hydro EV stations is:
- 12.07 cents per minute for 25 kW charging
- 21.13 cents per minute for 50 kW charging
- 27.17 cents per minute for 100 kW charging
Each session at our stations is billed per second. Following your charging session, you’ll receive an emailed receipt with a breakdown of your charge, including how long you charged for and the session cost before and after 5% GST is applied.
Charging rates are approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission and are based on the maximum kW output of the charging station, not on actual kW output received or requested by the vehicle.
Parking fees may apply
Note that rates at fast charging stations dont include parking fees. Be sure to check signage or PlugShare to see if a specific station requires payment for parking. Currently the following sites have a parking fee thats collected by the site host:

Is Charging An Ev At Home Safe
Its safe to charge an electric car at home however, just like regular electronics, there are some precautions you should consider:
- Only use charging adaptors provided by your vehicles manufacturer or by an electric vehicle supply equipment manufacturer.
- Dont use modified or damaged charging equipment.
- Dont use any faulty charging equipment.
- Dont use household adaptors like a multi-box, double plug or a travel plug between electric vehicle supply equipment and a socket outlet.

How Easy Is It To Charge An Electric Car On A Long Journey And What Does It Cost I Found Out By Driving 350 Miles In A Volvo C40
There’s been a lot of debate about electric cars lately – so we hit the road for a real-world experiment
Around a decade ago I had a test drive for a few days in a Nissan Leaf, which was the pioneer of widely-available electric cars in the UK. Before that, we had a few quirky little city cars, manufactured in small volumes, but the Leaf was the one that really kick-started our EV revolution.
It was early days, though, and as ground-breaking as that car was, the first version had a range of barely 100 miles. More to the point, public charging points were scarce, meaning it was only really any good for driving around town before charging overnight at home.
Things have moved along considerably since then. After Tesla hit the UK, I took a drive in its Model S in 2015 and it was a massive step forwards, with a much bigger range, making it a viable alternative to petrol and diesel. And today, practically every manufacturer has an all-electric offering and – crucially – the infrastructure is much better than it was when I drove that Leaf, with charging points widely available.
I’ve taken a few other electric cars out and about over the years in between, as well. But I’d never had the confidence to take them on any lengthy drives for fear of conking out – known as ‘range anxiety’.
Now, however, I wanted to finally give it a go. The car for this experiment would be a Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Pro, kindly lent to me by the Swedish manufacturer for a week.

What Happens If A Tesla Runs Out Of Battery
Youll have to disregard many reminders to run out of battery in a Tesla vehicle. That includes the directions to the nearest charging station and recommendations regarding speed reduction. But if worse comes to worst and your battery dies, youll require a flatbed truck service to take your car to the charging station.
Electric Cars Vs Petrol Cars
There are a number of differences between electric and petrol or diesel cars. One of the key benefits is the cost to fill up.
With the average UK electricity price sitting at around 17.2p per kWh and if you assume an electric car will travel 3.5 miles per kWh on average, to travel 100 miles would cost around £5 or 4.91p per mile.
However, a petrol car would cost around £12 or 12p per mile if fuel cost £1.34 per litre and we assume the UKs average new car fuel consumption in 2019 was 49.2 miles-per-gallon for petrol cars. If you have a cheaper fixed tariff, then it’s likely the cost to fill up your electric car will be cheaper still.
The above is only an indication and depending on where you live, the prices you pay for both electricity and fuel and the vehicle you own may increase or decrease these savings.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge Your Ev At Public Charging Stations
Its one of the first questions people ask about electric vehicles is the cost to charge electric cars. This is usually going to be the most common thing that will concern people when using public charging stations.
The cost of charging an electric car at a public charging station depends on several factors. But to ballpark it, the average cost per kWh is between $0.40 and $0.70, and you get around 3 to 4 miles for every kWh. With this in mind, the average EV vehicle could require around $30 to be fully charged. A larger vehicle may cost around $40.
These arent universal prices, so keep in mind that you could be paying more or less at any given station. The biggest variable is whether youre using a level 1, level 2 or level 3 charger.
The three main types of charging stations have obvious advantages and disadvantages:
- Level 1 chargers
This is the most common charger to see in households, as it works in a normal home outlet. But it is a slow charging option that takes quite a few hours. Were talking about 10 to 40 hours, depending on the battery size. The main reason for this is that this charger is only 120 volts.
- Level 2 chargers
Level 2 chargers upgrade the voltage output to 240, which accelerates your charge time to just a few hours. But the cost is also higher than with a level 1 charger, whether youre charging at a public station or installing a charging station at home. A professional at-home installation could set you back between $2500 and $3000.

What Is The Cost To Charge An Ev In Kwh
A conservative rule of thumb is that an electric car gets 3 to 4 miles per kWh, Voelcker says. So divide the total miles you drive each month by 3 to get the kWh you would use monthly. Multiply that number by your cost per kWh. The dollar amount you get will most likely be lower than what you pay each month to buy gasoline.
To put this into perspective, lets give an example. Lets say you drive about 1,183 miles per month . For an EV, you will use about 394 kWh in that timeframe. Using the U.S. household average from June 2022 of about 15 cents per kWh, it would cost about $59 per month to charge an electric car.

Cost Of Charging Electric Cars At Public Stations
If you are a Tesla owner, then the Tesla Supercharger Network has points across the UK which are often free to use for older vehicles. Newer Tesla owners, who bought their vehicle after January 1st 2017, may only receive a set number of free hours of charge.
In other areas, they bill per minute. When billing per minute, there are two tiers to account for changes in charging speeds, called tier 1 and tier 2. Tier 1 is 60 kW and below and tier 2 is 60 kW and above. Tesla advises that tier 1 is half the cost of tier 2.
Certain Model S and X vehicles ordered before November 2, 2018 receive 400 kWh of Supercharger credits annually. Please consult the manufacturer if you are in doubt.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge An Electric Car At Public Charging Points
The cost of charging an EV at public charging points varies – but not prohibitively so – depending on the type of charger and which company operates it. Some electric car charging points cost nothing, while some require standard contactless payments but you may need to have an account or a special electric car charging card to use others.

Electric Is Almost Always Cheaper
Electric cars are generally cheaper to refuel than their gasoline-drinking counterparts, particularly if you choose an efficient model and charge at home. As gas prices hover above $4 per gallon, the cost difference is even greater.
According to a March analysis of per-mile fueling costs by the consulting firm ICF’s Climate Center, it now costs roughly three times more to run a gas vehicle than an electric car.
You Need To Do Some Math
Dont sweat it. The math involved is pretty simple. For the most accurate estimate, it helps if you have a recent electric bill for reference. Youll want to calculate the amount you pay for electricity in a given month. Then well provide examples so you can determine how much you spend on each kilowatt-hour of electricity used.
For home charging, find your electric bill, then divide the of kilowatt-hours you used into the bottom-line dollar total. Thatll give you the price you paid per kWh, Voelcker explains.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average U.S. household pays about 15 cents per kWh.
Lets apply this rate to a typical electric car. This example does not take into consideration any discounts provided by your utility.
