When you spill something on leather seats or recently find one there are some proven dos and donts that you should follow. These tips can make it easier to remove leather stains in car seats and other interior products.

Dos

• Always start by blotting the stain with a clean and dry microfiber cloth. Microfiber is exceptionally absorbent, which makes it the perfect material for removing wet stuff from leather car seats. Anytime you spill something on leather, start by blotting it with a microfiber towel until its relatively dry.
• Before cleaning, always vacuum the leather car seats. This will remove any abrasives or harsh materials from the leather surface, making it easier to clean and reduce scratching.

Leather Care Advice From Our Chemists

A couple of years ago we sat down with some specialised industrial chemists who have worked in the leather manufacture and care industry for over 35+ years. They were a lot smarter than us in understanding what the ideal product is for maintaining the leather surfaces in cars. When researching what was being used currently, we sadly found a variety of products that simply were not suitable for the current auto leather.

For the reason of dollars rather than sense, nearly all the array of products contained oils, silicones, paraffins, waxes, petroleum distillates, or a lethal concoction of these. All of which ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR POLYURETHANE COATED LEATHER, as used in nearly every-car since the mid 1980’s. If used on a regular basis they can damage the PU top coat of the leather. Most actually do the opposite of what they claim, by damaging the coating, and making it vulnerable to accelerated wear and even de-laminating. So it initially feels nice and soft on the outside, but it is being killed by the products permeating into the coating and disrupting the structure. So, let’s explain the dramas you can face with these ‘leather care’ products.

Use A Dual Action Polisher

Ive added this in at the end as its really my last phase when it comes to cleaning leather. I use it only when all else has failed and when I deem it necessary.

So you may be thinking that DA polishers are just for paint, well thats not strictly true. They can be used with bristle attachments for things like cleaning leather. As you can imagine, it works fast and hard, so dont hold in one spot for too longjust as you would with paint.

If you dont have a DA polisher, then you can pick up attachments that fit into your drill bit that work just as well.

Are There Diy Options To Clean Leather Car Seats

Every do-it-yourselfer takes pride in fixing thingsthemselves. However, there is a difference between a DIY repair and usinghousehold materials to fix something. Lets be real for a minute using cheapor homemade solutions to remove stains on leather interior parts like car seatsis not a great idea.

Vinegar Olive Oil Water

One of the best and proven solutions for removing some hard to remove stains from leather seats and surfaces is a blend of vinegar, olive oil, and water. With this option, youll add ½ cup of olive oil, ¼ cup of vinegar and mix inside of a spray bottle. Youll spray it on the impacted area on the seat, let it soak for five minutes and then wipe clean.

But, if you remember above, we recommended not spraying anything on leather seats. So, this method is not really a good idea, especially on perforated leather seats.

Toothpaste or Baking Soda

So, if spraying on leather seats is not a good idea, isthere something else you can try that is more topical? Perhaps youve heard ofusing gritty materials like toothpaste or baking soda? This is better thanspraying a solution to leather seats but still, not the best idea.

Before getting all set to clean your car seat, you must also know the basic information that many car seats leather is coated with synthetic fiber that means its easy and safe to remove stains. But if your car has pure leather seats, you should know that there are four leather types that your car seats must be wearing on. These include:

Clean Leather Car Seat:

• Follow dilution recommendations on product labeling.
• Always, always, test in a hidden area first for color-fastness and results.
• In my professional business, all I use is the Simple Green APC for all cleaning needs. I simply dilute as needed based on cleaning duties.

• If your car leather is exceptionally dirty like the photos above, it is better to do a small section at a time, and do repeated steps until desired results are achieved.
• I had to scrub each section of the leather seating from the pictures above 3-4 times before I got acceptable results.
• If you have allowed your leather to go so long before you have decided to clean your leather car seats, you may have some permanently worn areas of your leather seating. Once you have cleaned them, these areas will be more visible once the dirt has been cleaned away.
• If you are not the original owner of your car I would proceed with extra caution at first to verify that your seats have not been re-dyed in the past and therefore affect the ability to clean them with these types of methods.

I often get asked what the best leather conditioner for your car is. My answer might not be what youd expect. The best leather conditioner for your car isnt actually a conditioner at all!

As a society, weve been taught that cheap cars have cloth seats, and expensive ones have leather. Were also charged a premium for leather when we order a brand new car. Because of the added expense, our automatic reaction is to try to take the best care of our investment so it doesnt get damaged. The truth about what youre sitting on may shock you though:

It isnt leather.

Lets give that a second to sink in Have you ever seen a large chunk of raw natural leather that has zero flaws in it? Me neither. So how would automakers possibly be able to find enough perfect leather to be able to produce thousands of seats?

Even if they could source it, youd end up paying A LOT more than $30,000 for a car that was equipped with it. As a result, many manufacturers will use a coated vinyl on their seats rather than actual leather.

You may be thinking youve been duped by the automakers, but that might not be the case. If you own a higher end car, the material they used on your seats does indeed start off as natural leather but its texture and color are artificially corrected.

Yup, thats right. A clear coat!

Tip No : Use Soft Scrub Brushes

If your leather seat has accumulated a significant amount of dirt, a car leather cleaning brush can do the trick.

It is advisable to use a gentle scrub brush to clean leather car seat if you want to ensure that no damage is inflicted on it. If the brush bristles are stiff and hard, they might leave marks on the leather, which would spoil the whole look.

Avoid cleaning the seat with excessive pressure. Instead, start scrubbing gently before increasing the pressure gradually as per the requirement as you proceed.

While cleaning or applying any cleaner, it will be better if you use a microfiber cloth. These are soft, and thus you will not have to worry about the leather surface getting scratched.

Never Let The Cleaning Products You Spray Dry While Wet

As you work, keep the cleaning products wet as you scrub and wipe the surface. You dont want to scrub when the leather is dry, or it could leave scratches and even impact its color. So, check your cloth often and add a bit more cleaner to it as needed to keep the surface wet as you wipe away the dirt.

Spray The Cleaning Solution On A Cloth First Instead Of The Seat

Whether youre working with perforated or solid leather seats, always spray the cleaning solution directly on the cloth. If you spray the cleaner all over the seats, it could drip down into the crevices. The extra exposure time isnt good for the leather, either, even when using gentle cleaning products.

Using Baking Soda To Clean

Baking soda has great cleaning properties, and that is why it can be used to remove the poop stains from your leather.

Using baking soda is especially good if the poop situation you had was a liquid one. You will need something that can absorb or pull out the poop from the leather fibers. This is where the baking soda comes in. Baking soda has the ability to absorb moisture, making it ideal for removing dampness.

Note: Make sure you have removed or blotted most of the poop before cleaning.

Heres how to use baking soda to clean poop from your leather car seats;

Step 1:

• Take some baking soda and dump it on the leather seat where the poop is.

• Make sure the baking soda covers the entire poop stains.

Step 2:

• Allow the baking soda to sit on the surface of the poop stains for about five minutes.

• Baking soda will absorb all the wet poop stains due to its moisture-absorbing properties.

Step 3:

• Take a damp sponge and use it to scrub the leather surface where you had dumped baking soda.

• Make sure you scrub the leather surface until it is clean.

Step 4:

• You can now wipe away any of the leftover baking soda.
