Electric car use by country varies worldwide, as the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles is affected by consumer demand, market prices, availability of charging infrastructure, and government policies, such as purchase incentives and long term regulatory signals .

Plug-in electric vehicles are generally divided into all-electric or battery electric vehicles , that run only on batteries, and plug-in hybrids , that combine battery power with internal combustion engines. The popularity of electric vehicles has been expanding rapidly due to government subsidies, their increased range and lower battery costs, and environmental sensitivity. However, the stock of plug-in electric cars represented just 1% of all passengers vehicles on the world’s roads by the end of 2020, of which pure electrics constituted two thirds.

The Beginnings Roadster And Private Funding

Tesla was founded on July 1, 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in San Carlos, California. The founders were influenced to start the company after General Motors recalled all its EV1 electric cars in 2003 and then destroyed them, and seeing the higher fuel efficiency of battery-electric cars as an opportunity to break the usual correlation between high performance and low fuel economy in automobiles. The AC Propulsion tzero also inspired the company’s first vehicle, the Roadster. Eberhard said he wanted to build “a car manufacturer that is also a technology company”, with its core technologies as “the battery, the computer software, and the proprietary motor”.

Ian Wright was the third employee, joining a few months later. The three went looking for venture capital funding in January 2004 and connected with Elon Musk, who contributed US$6.5 million of the initial US$7.5 million round of investment in February 2004 and became chairman of the board of directors. Musk then appointed Eberhard as the CEO.J.B. Straubel joined in May 2004 as the fifth employee. A lawsuit settlement agreed to by Eberhard and Tesla in September 2009 allows all five to call themselves co-founders.

Early Electric Vehicle Prototypes

To find the first electric vehicle invented and its creator, we have to look back to the 1830s, when Scottish inventor Robert Anderson built the first motorized carriage. Many dont consider this to be the first electric vehicle, simply because its batteries could not be recharged, so it had no actual use as a mode of transportation. With the invention of rechargeable batteries, more and more electric vehicles that could drive small distances popped up. At this time in automotive history, internal combustion engines and electric engines were still neck and neck, and no one really knew which type of vehicle would come out on top.

Although inventors around the world were designing, and even patenting, their own electric vehicles, none of them were really anything besides one-off inventions. That all changed in 1894 with the Electrobat.

Electric Vehicles Hit Us Market

In 1889, electric vehicles were brought to the US market by William Morrison. Morrison first encountered electric cars in Europe and noticed their popularity, deciding to introduce the technology to US consumers. This was a defining moment in the electric vehicle boom that was to come in the early 1900s.

What Was The First Diesel Car

Rudolf Diesel built the first diesel engine in 1893, and while it was initially applied to locomotives, lorries and tractors, the first series-production diesel car was the 1933 Citroen 7U Familiale estate. Manufacturers Mercedes and Hanomag followed soon after.

The fuel surged in popularity in the 1990s and 2000s, as governments scrambled to tackle the greenhouse effect cause by the creation of carbon dioxide. Diesel produces far less CO2 than petrol, so the fuel received significant tax breaks. However, it became evident that other harmful emissions from diesel, namely oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter, were having an effect on human health, and car makers were told to clean up their diesel engines.

This led to the 2015 dieselgate scandal, in which Volkswagen was found to have been using defeat devices to recognise emissions tests and switch to a more less polluting engine mode than was used on the road. A catastrophic loss in faith of diesel resulted, and governments turned to resurgent electric vehicle technology to meet their climate goals. Many, including the UK, are now planning to phase out the sale of both petrol- and diesel-powered cars by the 2030s in an effort to hit climate targets. So while petrol and diesel have had their day, electric power is back with a vengeance.

The Volt Takes Things Farther

Production begins for the Chevrolet Volt. This is GMâs ârange-extended electric car,â but most people will call it a plug-in hybrid. GM engineers see it as an electric car that does away with ârange anxiety,â a term first used to describe the fear that a GM EV1 would run out of battery power before reaching a charger. The Volt wins the North American Car of the Year, European Car of the Year and Motor Trend Car of the Year awards, among others.

Who Invented The Electric Car

The answer to who invented the electric car isnt entirely simple. Electric cars as we know them today come from the inventions of a few different brilliant minds.

Hungarian engineer Ányos Jedlik was the first person to invent the electric motor, back in 1828. The motor lives in a museum in Budapest, and still works perfectly well to this day1!

The Scottish inventor Robert Anderson was seemingly the first person to put this technology to use for road transport. He strapped a motor and a battery to a carriage sometime in the 1830s, creating a crude prototype for electric cars as we know them today2.

In 1859, French physicist Gaston Planté invented lead-acid batteries, which are still used in some EVs today. His invention was later improved on by English engineer Thomas Parker. Parker and Planté both submitted a patent for an improved lead-acid battery in 1882, and both were granted.

Parker then set up shop manufacturing lead-acid batteries in Wolverhampton. Together with his partner, Paul Elwell, he developed several prototypes for electric cars.

But it was William Morrison, a Scottish-American inventor, who created the first successful electric carriage in the US. He completed his first prototype in 1887.

Tesla Announces Production Of Luxury Electric Vehicle

In 2006 electric car manufacturer Tesla announced its plans to produce a luxury electric vehicle. This electric vehicle, the Tesla Roadster, would be the first electric sports car to travel up to 245 miles on a single charge.

The Early Rise And Fall Of The Electric Car

To understand the popularity of electric vehicles circa 1900, it is also important to understand the development of the personal vehicle and the other options available. At the turn of the 20th century, the horse was still the primary mode of transportation. But as Americans became more prosperous, they turned to the newly invented motor vehicle — available in steam, gasoline or electric versions — to get around.

Steam was a tried and true energy source, having proved reliable for powering factories and trains. Some of the first self-propelled vehicles in the late 1700s relied on steam yet it took until the 1870s for the technology to take hold in cars. Part of this is because steam wasnt very practical for personal vehicles. Steam vehicles required long startup times — sometimes up to 45 minutes in the cold — and would need to be refilled with water, limiting their range.

As electric vehicles came onto the market, so did a new type of vehicle — the gasoline-powered car — thanks to improvements to the internal combustion engine in the 1800s. While gasoline cars had promise, they werent without their faults. They required a lot of manual effort to drive — changing gears was no easy task and they needed to be started with a hand crank, making them difficult for some to operate. They were also noisy, and their exhaust was unpleasant.

What Was The First Modern Electric Car

Internal-combustion cars have ruled the roost ever since the Model T arrived, but there have been a few efforts to kick-start the electric trend since then. In 1941, Peugeot was one of the only manufacturers to turn to electrification as an alternative to fossil fuels during wartime rationing, with its Véhicule Léger de Ville built until 1943. It had a range of around 50 miles, but could only muster speeds of around 20mph, The fuel crisis in 1971 saw a number of small, flash-in-the-pan efforts to offer an alternative to thirsty petrol cars, but ultimately these weren’t very successful.

In 1992, Ford released its Ecostar a Ford-Escort-based van that entered service with the Royal Mail and other operators in small numbers. In 1995 Peugeot introduced its 106 Electric, with over 3,500 examples built up until 2003.

Other electric cars arrived across the Atlantic in the US as a result of new clean-air policies sales of these models, including the streamlined General Motors EV1 in 1996, declined into the early 2000s as consumer interest waned and the SUV boom began.

The first examples of electric vehicles fitting the modern description of an electric car that is, one that can perform ably on all roads and at the same speeds as an internal-combustion car came thanks to improvements in lithium-ion battery technology in the eighties, nineties and early noughties.

Teslas initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States has been the subject of considerable criticism. Musk had sought to exempt the Tesla Fremont factory in Alameda County, California from the governments stay-at-home orders. In an earnings call in April, he was heard calling the public health orders fascist. If you want to charge in transit, its helpful to have a smartphone. Despite the requirement for new chargers to have contactless payment options, most networks have apps that can help you find chargers and manage your costs. You can download them while sitting in the car.

Some apps merely ask for your credit or debit card info, and will charge you based on time and power used. The phone sends commands directly to the point, telling it to start and stop, and to open access flaps.

Access and electricity costs vary. Some venues such as hotels and shopping centres give power away for free, but most posts cost around £1.50 per hour. Rapid chargers are generally more expensive, reflecting the fact that they can cram more electricity into the battery in a shorter time. An Ecotricity charger at a motorway service station will cost £3 to connect for up to 45 minutes, plus 30p for each kWh of electricity. Ecotricity home-energy customers get a discount. Other rapid chargers, such as those at some Shell stations, simply charge for the electricity. Currently the rate is 39p/kWh.

Iran: Saipa 701 Caravan

Irans motor industry has been dominated for many years by Saipa and Iran Khodro, both of which have built many foreign models under licence. Saipa was the first to produce a vehicle of its own design. The 701 Caravan was a minivan, or MPV, clearly inspired by the first-generation Ford Galaxy, SEAT Alhambra and Volkswagen Sharan but powered by a 2.4-litre Nissan engine.
