But Extended Warranties Are Scams Right
Raise your hand if youve heard extended warranties called a scam.
I think weve all been there once. I used to get the letters all the time telling me that my car warranty was about to expire, and I always used to wonder where the hell my address got out. Hey, at least the notices made great kindling for the campfire. To this day no one has told me how in the heck the companies sending me mail knew my vehicle mileage.
I blame big brother. Someone really is always watching. But I digress.
There are two types of warranty companies: the legitimate ones, and then theres everyone else.
This stereotype is so prevalent in our industry, we wrote an entire article about it. Luckily, most extended car warranty companies are completely legitimate enterprises that wont steal your money like that Nigerian prince who keeps emailing you. If youre worried, we always advise reading the reviews. Using consumer sites like BBB and Consumer Affairs should give you a good picture into whos here to help you out.
After all, weve paid for over $16 million in repairs this year, and were hoping that number climbs even higher.
Should I Buy An Extended Warranty On A Used Car
In my opinion, extended warranties really shine as your car starts to age. The cost of car ownership increases as your vehicle ages which is something weve talked about before. AAA estimates that the average car costs around $9,000 dollars a year to own and operate a car .
Personally, I winced a little when I saw that number. Thats only slightly less than the $12,144 dollars that the median US renter pays out per year. And these costs start to climb as your car ages. Older cars break down more often, its just a fact of life.
I always think back to the 2001 Honda Accord my sister owned when we were teenagers. Despite its billing as one of the most reliable cars ever, I saw that rust bucket sitting idle on the side of our street more than I saw it driving. I say that affectionately, because she did take good care of the car. It was just a lemon. In a 2-year period, everything you could imagine went out. The timing belt. The transmission. Struts. The head gasket.
Her Accord was supposed to be in the prime of its life at only ~125,000 miles.
She would have saved thousands of dollars if she had a warranty.
Of course, just because she had bad luck doesnt mean you will too.
But, having the security of an extended warranty on your used car does feel good because you know youll never pay more than your out of pocket maximum. That way, when something goes haywire, your bank account will stay covered.

Carshield Reviews: What Are People Saying
Companies like CarShield rely on positive feedback from two source types. The first is from their customers directly. Its the kind of feedback they could publish onto their website or social media. The second kind is from official/expert groups like the Better Business Bureau. On neither count does CarShield appear to do very well.
If You Dont Have The Savings To Absorb A Potentially Costly Repair
If youre living paycheck to paycheck, it might seem impossible to come up with the money needed to pay for an expensive auto repair.
A fairly common emergency fund is at least $2,000 dollars, but CNBC reported this summer that nearly 60% of hardworking Americans cant cover an unexpected expense of more than $1,000 dollars without going into debt. Its a situation Ive found myself in at least twice in the last several years.
And it sucks.
You know it, and I know it.
Luckily, weve already written about alternative options for paying for car repairs if you ever find yourself with a hefty repair bill without the cash to pay for it.
If you have an extended warranty, you wont be paying the out of pocket price for any covered repair. That means no worrying about what credit card has enough of the balance remaining, and no struggling to pull together cash. It also means no predatory payday loans and their outrageous interest rates.
Just one simple monthly payment and no worrying about catastrophic repairs.

How Does It Work
CarShield does not offer the warranty, as per the FAQ instead, they are considered to be a nationwide company that will connect you with a leading third-party administrator, working with companies such as American Auto Shield and United Car Care, to name a few. When you first work with the company, they will ask you a series of questions and then determine which company would be best for your situation.
Carshield Reviews & Ratings
CarShield has been featured on ESPN, CNN, HGTV, and TBS and has a number of celebrity endorsements. Additionally, there are thousands of online CarShield reviews from customers. The company currently holds a customer rating of 4.1 out of 5.0 stars on Google with more than 8,000 reviews. It also received 4.0 stars on Trustpilot with over 21,000 customer ratings.
Despite these positive CarShield reviews, the Better Business Bureau gives the company an F rating and indicates a pattern of complaints involving pushy or misleading sales and advertising, difficulty canceling policies, and rude CarShield representatives.
There are more than 1,100 CarShield customer reviews on the BBBs website, averaging a rating of 1.45 out of 5.0 stars. CarShield customer service responds to many comments, and about 1,100 complaints have been closed in the past year. However, the complaints are a small number in comparison with the over one million contracts the provider has sold.

What Is Covered By A Carshield Warranty
CarShield offers multiple levels of coverage, but as we mentioned above, there is no point in worrying about any but the top plan since they cost the same amount of money. CarShield says that its Diamond protection plan Covers everything ranging from engine and transmission failures, to starter problems, and fuel pump breakdowns.
This plan is similar to the bumper to bumper plan that your manufacturer offers, but not identical. Some items that are excluded include:
- Brake rotors and drums
- GPS systems
- CD Players
Most of what CarShield is excluding are wear items and items that have a life expectancy, but not all. Be sure that you read and understand section B of this Sample Contract Here before you agree to the plan.

Brake coverage does not include normal wear.
Catalytic converters are covered under extended emissions warranties provided by every manufacturer. Check your state laws for details.

Kia: 5 Years/60000 Miles
With its affordable vehicles and quality warranty coverage options, Kia stands out as one of the top brands in the industry. It offers the same impressive coverage terms as its sister brand, Hyundai, with bumper-to-bumper protection lasting 5 years or 60,000 miles and powertrain coverage for 10 years or 100,000 miles.
The main difference between the Kia and Hyundai factory warranties is Kias shorter term lengths for roadside assistance and corrosion. This still sets Kias factory warranty apart with some of the longest coverage terms on the market.

Benefits Of An Extended Car Warranty
Purchasing an aftermarket car warranty can be a great way to continue to protect your car after the manufacturers warranty has expired. As cars become more complex, there is a higher chance that something could go wrong.
With so many computers, parts, and systems controlling your vehicle, it probably doesnt surprise you that these technological advances might fail. Unfortunately, if your vehicle is only covered by a manufacturers warranty for, say, three years, your warranty may be expired by the time you really need it.
Extended car warranties keep your car covered in the case of a mechanical or technological failure. Based on what type of car you have and how much it costs to own over its lifetime, this could save you money.
Besides protecting your vehicle after the manufacturer’s warranty expires, the best extended car warranties provide benefits such as:
