If your car has a dipstick, checking the oil level is simple. Make sure the car is turned off, then pop the hood . Find the handle for the dipstick and pull it out of its tube. With a clean rag, wipe off any oil, then re-insert the dipstick back into the tube. Make sure its fully reinstalled and seated properly to ensure you get an accurate reading.
Pull the dipstick out a second time, and take a look at the level markings towards the bottom. Most dipsticks will have High and Low markings to indicate the oil level. Again, youre going to want to refer to your owners manual to get a handle on exactly what to look for, and where your oil level should be.
If youve recently been driving your car, your oil level may display slightly lower than if its been sitting for a few hours. This happens because some of the oil can still be spread throughout the engine, and has yet to settle to the bottom of the pan where the dipstick sits. How To Add Oil
Use the grade of oil recommended in the owners manual. It will usually have a designation such as 0W-20 or 5W-30. You can buy it by the quart at any service station or auto-parts store, as well as in many supermarkets and discount retailers.
To add oil, remove the oil filler cap, usually located on top of the engine. Since over-filling with oil is bad for the engine, you should add oil a little at a time. Start by adding about half a quart. Using a funnel helps avoid spills. Wait a minute or so and check the dipstick again. If the level is still below or near the minimum mark, add the rest of the quart. Unless your engine is leaking or burning oil you will rarely need to add more than a quart. However, if a second quart is needed, add that in slowly as well, checking as you go.
Screw the oil filler cap back on securely, and youre done.
