Where To Look For A Car

Once youve answered the essential questions to narrow down your ideal vehicle and secured preapproval for your car loan, its time to begin your search.

This step of car buying can feel just as overwhelming as deciding what kind of car you want, since there are a lot of different places you can go to buy a car.

Heres an overview of your options:

In-person dealerships: The car selection at a dealers lot will be limited, but some dealerships offer rebates or manufacturer incentives when you visit the lot.

Online car dealers: Selection is practically unlimited and going this route can help you find a great deal on any make and model. Pay attention to where the car is located and fees related to transporting the car.

Private sellers: You can find private sellers through websites like Craigslist or EBay. These sellers tend to offer the lowest prices, but going this route involves more hands-on communication, the safety concerns of meeting up with strangers and buying from an unknown seller. The online platform you use may also charge fees.

Industry guides: In addition to providing respected automotive research and reviews, industry guides such as Kelley Blue Book , Edmunds and NADAguides also help prospective car buyers search for their next car.

Car You Should Buy Used: Toyota Sienna

A used minivan can be a mixed bag because you know that many kid-made messes have occurred inside the cabin, but a pre-owned Sienna, while it may still be hiding some crumbs and crayon nubs, will deliver additional years of solid performance for a new family. Toyotas reliability makes this a safe choice in the used minivan market. If you are willing to go back a decade for your next family car, Autotrader.com thinks you may be able to snag a Sienna for less than $5,000!

Are Performance Suvs Sports Cars

As consumers continue to buy SUVs in greater numbers, a new type of sporty car has emerged: the performance SUV. These more capable SUVs are built with extensive suspension, powertrain, and body upgrades to improve on-road performance. However, in the case of certain midsize and full-size SUVs, these changes sacrifice off-road capability.

Models like the Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus, and BMW’s M-badged SUV models drive like sports cars and perform surprisingly well considering their ride height. All that performance, however, sometimes comes at the cost of ride comfort because the body and suspension need to be stiffened so much to minimize roll. Automakers usually counter that harshness with adaptive dampers and air suspension setups to mitigate harsh impacts.

Despite their capabilities, performance SUVs are limited by their size. Large models will like the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 or the Audi SQ7 will never move as easily as a smaller sports car. Subcompact SUVs like the Countryman or Hyundai Kona N are closer to hot hatches, which makes them easier to rework for high-performance applications .

In short, yes, performance SUVs can be sports cars if you aren’t stuck on the traditional definition. SUVs can be made to stir your senses they just require additional modifications compared to a sedan, hatchback, or coupe.

Electric Sports Cars: What To Expect

Electrification isn’t just for the eco-conscious consumer. Take the Tesla Model 3 Performance and Porsche Taycan as examples: These two four-doors offer thrilling performance without any tailpipe emissions. Other automakers have joined the fray with models like the Audi e-Tron GT and Lucid Air.

If you’re not comfortable with going all-electric yet, hybrid options are also available. The McLaren Artura is a great example of a hybrid sports car.

Cars You Shouldnt Buy Used: Mini Cooper

They are almost too cute and have European style to spare, but the reliability of Mini models pretty much across the board, from the Roadster to the Clubman and including the classic Mini Cooper itself, drags down their value in the used car market. You will end up paying too much at the repair shop for this one.

Outlook For Car Sales

In 2023, U.S. auto sales are seen rebounding as supply chain woes continue to ease.

“Indications are that shipments will rise incrementally throughout the year, allowing sales to increase from 2022 levels,” the analysts at J.D. Power and LMC Auto said.

Despite a possible economic downturn, pent-up consumer demand from the past two years is expected to keep inventory levels relatively low.

Therefore, 2023 is likely to be “another year of relative healthy pricing and profitability” for automakers and auto dealers, the analysts said.

New U.S. EV tax credits of up to $7,500 should buoy demand for electric vehicles in 2023. But the EVs must be assembled in North America, benefiting Tesla, GM and Ford at the expense of most foreign automakers. Income and price cuts also could limit their reach.

Global vehicle sales will rise 6% to 85.7 million units in 2023, J.D. Power predicts. But it warns that recession risk could cut the forecast by as much as 2 million units.

What Car Size Would Be Right For Me

JEFF

Whether its too big or too cramped, buying a car thats not the right size can lead to instant regret.

Do you have a growing family? Lots of equipment to transport? Limited parking space? Before buying, figure out what size and how much space you need to suit your everyday use of a vehicle.

Here are a few size considerations to keep in mind when comparing vehicles:

  • Overall dimensions. Consider the length, height and width and make sure you search for vehicles that will fit into your garage or parking space.
  • Interior measurements. Compare inches of headroom and legroom, and if you plan to transport passengers and cargo, look at how many cubic feet are behind each row and in the trunk or cargo area.
  • Second- and third-row seating. Make sure theres enough seating space for each of your passengers and enough room for them to easily get in and out of the vehicle.

For a family car, we recommend buckling the whole family in before buying. Take some time to play with seating configurations and make sure theres space for strollers, musical instruments, sporting equipment or any other items you regularly transport.

Your location can also influence the size of car that you need. City dwellers may want a compact car that is easy to park and maneuver. An all-wheel-drive SUV or an off-road truck may be more practical in a rural area, especially where roads are not paved.

Choosing The Type Of Vehicle To Buy

These days, nearly half of auto shoppers choose crossovers tall vehicles based on passenger cars that have an open back area rather than an enclosed trunk. Crossovers blend most of the efficiency and driving characteristics of a traditional car with a bit of the off-road and foul-weather capabilities of a four-wheel drive SUV.

If you dont need a tall driving position and rarely travel in deep snow, a traditional car might be a better choice, however. Whether in the form of a sedan, coupe, convertible or station wagon, cars tend to be lighter and have a lower center of gravity than crossovers, which aids efficiency and handling.

Conversely, someone who regularly tows or travels on poorly-kept dirt roads might lean towards a traditional SUV or pickup, which are generally built on heavy-duty truck frames to take such abuse. Though most SUVs and pickups are gas hogs, there are a handful of efficient options, such as the hybrid version of the new Ford Maverick and diesel versions of the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Tahoe. On top of this, a range of electric options including the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup are entering the market over the next year.

Anyone who doesnt go off-road or tow much but does carry a lot or people or stuff should remember that minivans still exist. This oft-overlooked segment of the market is ideal for larger families and theres a range of front- and all-wheel-drive minivan options that can seat up to eight people in car-like comfort.

What Is Your Budget

Answering the question What type of car should I buy? starts with looking at your budget. Nothing has more of an impact on your vehicle choice than what you can afford. Youll want to weigh the overall cost and, if you finance your purchase, what your monthly payments will be. Dont ignore other expenses like fuel, maintenance and insurance. AAAs Your Driving Costs study is a handy resource for calculating your overall potential expense. The latest edition found that owning and operating a new vehicle cost $9,561 a year. Some types of vehicles including minivans, large sedans medium-size SUVs and pickup trucks cost even more.

How To Choose The Right Car For You

After answering the initial questions at the beginning of this guide and exploring some of the most popular choices, you should hopefully have an idea about what type of car will best suit your needs. However, that is just the beginning of deciding what car you should buy. Now you need to find that car that meets your budget and ticks off all those boxes you have set up for yourself.

Start by going online to do some more research. You will find several reviews, comprehensive spec lists, and even comparisons between brands and models. Most experts have done the bulk of the legwork for you. It is up to you whose advice you find more trustworthy.

Once you have settled on the car you want, decide on whether you can purchase the vehicle with a single payment or if you need to take an auto loan and finance the vehicle. This will mean you will have monthly payments you need to maintain until the car is settled in full. Your budget will play a large role in determining your affordability and which route to take. Some even choose the option of leasing a vehicle instead of buying one.

    What Is My Budget

Which of these two cars should I get

The first step is to determine what you can afford. If you start car shopping without checking your budget, youre likely to end up with a vehicle that puts an undue strain on your finances. In the worst case scenario, you could even end up missing payments or facing repossession.

Instead of overspending, do the math to see what vehicle expenses you can sustain. In addition to having a down payment saved, consider how much room you have to take on these recurring expenses:

If possible, try saving up the full monthly expenses for a few months before you make your car purchase. This will give you a chance to see whats truly affordable and, as an added benefit, can help you save more for your down payment.

Once you determine your budget, shop around for the best auto loan. Although many dealerships offer financing, youll often get better rates and terms through other lenders. You can fill out a single form with LendingTree and receive up to five auto loan offers to help you begin your search.
