With Tesla and Polestar coming out as the safest car manufacturers, you may have thought EVs would be at the top, however, hybrids actually came out as the consistently safest car. They scored an impressive 84% safety rating across the tested models.

Hybrids were pushed up by their all-around safety records with models like the Lexus E5 with 86% and the Toyota Prius at 84%.

Electric vehicles followed with a 78% safety record. Although two EVs were in the top five safest cars, the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, lower scoring models like the Citroen e-Mehari 56% and the Aiways U5 at 61% pushed the overall score down.

Petrol and diesel cars came in last with a 75% safety rating. Its worth noting that due to the much larger number of traditional fuel models available, the score was affected. They also had both the top-scoring and lowest scoring models for safety available.

Car Safety: Which Cars Are The Safest & Which Cars Are The Least Safe

When its time to buy a new car, whats the biggest factor in your decision? For most of us, cost is certainly on our mind, but how about fuel efficiency? Reliability? Are you loyal to a particular brand? What will you be using the car for, primarily? If youre into music, does it have a good stereo? And, lets be honest, dont we think about how were going to look when others see us driving our new set of wheels?

But how often do you consider the safety of the vehicle youre thinking of buying?

After all, those other factors dont really matter if an unexpected collision could lead to you or your passengers ending up in the hospital, or worse. Its easy for many of us to forget that we will be driving our new car for several years, in many different types of weather conditions, over many different kinds of roads, and sharing those roads with thousands of other drivers who may not have our safety at the front of their minds.

Ideally, safety should be the very first consideration when purchasing a new vehicle, with all the other factors starting at a distant second.

Modern automobiles come standard with a variety of safety improvements over their counterparts from even twenty years ago. Plus, optional safety features are available on many cars that wouldve sounded like science fiction to our grandparents, such as rear view cameras, heads-up displays, lane-deviation alerts and blind-spot sensors.

We’ve fallen in love with this stylish Prius alternative. Along with a spacious interior boasting thoughtful storage solutions, the Insight benefits from a smooth ride and tidy handling, making it one of our favorite compact sedans. The Insight receives an impressive EPA rating of 55/49 mpg city/highway, or 51/45 mpg for the loaded Touring variant. As much as this sedan has captured our hearts, the powertrain is noisier than we’d like due to the CVT automatic’s unrefined tuning.

The Chrysler Pacifica has its merits, but it’s not our top choice among minivans. It came in third place in our minivan comparison test, beating out the Toyota Sienna but losing to the Honda Odyssey and Kia Carnival. It is the driver’s choice of the bunch, and we love the Stow ‘N Go seats, but we can’t get past its unimpressive interior materials and high price tag.

The Subaru Outback, which earned the top safety rating in the Insurance Institutes most recent … evaluations, during testing for pedestrian front crash prevention.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety,

There is some good news for safety-minded new car buyers. Ninety 2021 model year vehicles have been recognized for their safety benefits. Thats a notable increase from last February, when 64 models were cited.

Volvo garnered the most picks in the top category, with nine cars. Hyundai Motor Group, including the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, earned 17 awards, the most overall. Five were in the top category and 12 were in the second category.

Only one automaker, Mitsubishi, failed to earn a single award. The automaker did not garner any wins last year either. General Motors came in with only two wins one in each award category, striking for such a large manufacturer.

Those are the highlights of a new evaluation of 2021 models that aims to give consumers an efficient way to identify vehicles with the best level of safety available. The annual list was released on Wednesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit financed by the insurance industry.

Acura Rdx: What We Think

The Acura RDX is a MotorTrend favorite in its crowded class. In addition to being handsome and well equipped as standard, the RDX impresses with its upscale and well-executed interior. The infotainment display is crisp and easy to read, even if its touchpad control requires a bit of a learning curve. The latest version of Acura’s Super-Handling AWD system delivers just that: super handling. It’s great to drive, great to look at, and safe, too. Other than the infotainment system and a transmission that could use a little more refinement, there’s little to dislike about the Acura RDX.

Lexus Es: What We Think

If scintillating performance is your top priority, the Lexus ES probably isn’t for you. Traditionally, other sedans have provided better handling and a more engaging overall driving experience. But buyers looking for comfort will find a lot to like about this midsizer. There’s plenty of room for passengers in the extremely comfortable semi-aniline leather seats that were standard on our Ultra Luxury trim tester, and the cargo bay is cavernous. An update for 2022 should improve brake pedal feel on gas-only models, and a new touchscreen replaces the previous car’s frustrating touchpad-controlled infotainment system.
