Natural Ways To Make Your Car Smell Better

Kids, pets, and even your own spills can lead to a smelly car. You dont have to resort to an expensive detailing service to get rid of odors in a hurry. There are lots of ways that you can use essential oils to improve the smell in your car. Some are even aesthetically pleasing, too! If you want to restore the new car smell in your new Toyota, some of the best scents to combat odor include:

  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary
  • Clove

The trick to turning essential oils into an air freshener for your car is getting them where they need to go. The following are some ways to make the most of these great smells and get rid of those that arent as much of a joy:

  • Make your own vent clip. Glue a cotton ball a clothespin and apply several drops of the oil to the cotton. Clip onto the vent and enjoy the refreshing smell anytime you run the heat or air conditioner.
  • Place baking soda into a jar and add essential oils. Make several holes in the top of the lid. Baking soda removes unwanted odors, while the essential oil gives your car a more enjoyable scent.
  • Add essential oil to rice and place in a vented jar. Freshen whenever needed by shaking and keep the good smells going.
  • Mix together rubbing alcohol, a pinch of salt, and essential oils in a spray bottle and create a spray air freshener that you can apply where needed.

Mason Jar Air Freshener

Add baking soda to your mason jar until it is about 2/3 full. Add about 20 drops of your favorite essential oil or oils to the baking soda. We used equal amounts of lemon, lavender, and peppermint oils.

Put the lid on the jar and shake well to distribute the oils throughout the baking soda.

Next, remove the lid and use the flat disk part as a template to trace a circle onto a piece of cardboard. Cut out the circle using scissors or a sharp craft knife, and place it on top of the jar of baking soda.

Use the ring part of the lid to secure the cardboard to the jar, and then use the thumbtack to poke several holes in the cardboard lid. All done!

What Is The New Car Smell

Unfortunately, sometimes things that smell good arent good for you. According to Chemical & Engineering News, new car smell is created when volatile organic compounds from the adhesives and sealants used in car manufacturing emit noxious gas into the passenger compartment, something known as off-gassing. Individually these VOCs arent harmful, but together they could cause health problems if there is long-term exposure. Fortunately for your health, but perhaps unfortunately for your olfactory pleasure, VOCs that create new car smell dissipate over a few months.

Why Air Fresheners Dont Work

Although popular, air fresheners have never really been a solution. Go to any gas station or auto shop and you can find an endless array of dangly cardboard things or bottles of vent-mounted perfume. But, the truth is that they only mask unpleasant smells by overpowering them with an artificial smell. The real underlying problem hasnt gone away.

There are also a number of air fresheners that claim to give your ride that new car smell. Despite their high claims, we have never found them effective! That real, satisfying new car smell is the pure, undiluted scent of new products . Not new perfume with undertones of dirt and mold!

Everyone has a different definition of what smells “good.” It can be a spicy scent, floral aroma, minty freshness, or medicinal antiseptic smell. One thing that we can all agree on is that malodors are not pleasant for anyone. According to the Monell Chemical Sciences Center at Sweden’s Umea University, malodors like rotting garbage, a stinky wet dog, or smelly socks can cause psychological and physiological stress. So, making our homes smell good is beneficial to everyone’s well-being.

We’ve compiled several ways you can add your favorite scents to your home. However, routine basic cleaning is essential to reducing unpleasant smells. Proper cleaning, making repairs to prevent leaks, pest control, and frequent removal of clutter and garbage goes a long way to a home that smells lovely. Adding fragrance may mask problems temporarily but won’t solve the root of the malodor.

    Keeping The Evaporator Core Dry

The dark, damp ducts of a car’s air conditioning system are a perfect environment for mildew. It commonly forms on the evaporator core and its fins, both of which can collect moisture during use. To dry out the system and prevent mildew from forming, run the car’s blower with the air conditioner off for about two minutes before turning off the engine. It requires some discipline, sure, but it beats that sour mildew smell.

What Is It About Mcdonalds Smell

Any fast, fried, or fatty foods, including McDonalds, release small oil droplets into the air. The oil collides with dust in the air, which weighs down the dust, making it stick to things instead of just linger in the air. Essentially, the dust thats floating around everyones car becomes less mobile, causing a smell thatll stick around longer.

    Change The Air Filter

Often, we can ignore and forget how important it is to change the cabin air filter. If youre not sure how to find your air filter, check your owners manual booklet or look up your exact model online for the recommended replacement interval and replace the air filter.

Like an engine air filter, the cabin filter is used to filter out pollen, mold, dust, and other things from entering your cabin. If your car starts to smell, the order can circulate into the HVA system and can penetrate the paper air filter. If air filters are not regularly changed or cleaned, they will trap bad smells and cause your car to smell even worse when you turn your air or heat on.

Check out this video on the importance of changing your cabin air filter:

    Making New Car Smell Yourself

So it is possible to recreate the new car smell yourself or just a smell that you like without using fake scents. You can use mesh bags of fresh wood chips to give your car that romantic yacht-like scent of teak wood. Or if you want the real deal new leather scent, go to a local shoe maker and buy their leather scraps. The best way to make a car smell like the fresh ingredients you desire is not to replicate them with something fake but to put the real scents into your vehicle.

Buy fragrant leather scraps for cheap online, pick up wood chips and put fresh carpeted mats in your car. In addition you can spray some new car scents around the car as well.

The first thing I recommend and the easiest thing to do is to get a car spray that mocks the new car scent. Here are a few brands that we think replicate the new car smell well:

    Felt & Foam Air Freshener

    • A piece of string, ribbon or twine

First, youll need to decide what shape your want your air freshener to be. We made a couple of different fun shapes a sunburst, a seashell, and a flip flop!

Once youve decided what design youll be using, cut your design out twice once using the adhesive craft foam, and once using the craft felt. We were able to cut out both using our Silhouette Curio.

When both your shapes are cut out, peel the paper backing off of the craft foam and stick it to the back of the felt piece.

Use a piece of twine or string to create a loop at the top to hang it from.

The last step is to add your scent! You can either just add a few drops of essential oils directly to the felt side, or you can use a small spray bottle like we did. Spraying the essential oils mixed with water will give you a more even distribution of oils.

When youre done, all thats left to do is hang your new air freshener from your rearview mirror!
