If youre the type who browses around the net about cars, youll have spotted some car models with the GT letters attached to its name. Save for car enthusiasts, some of you might not know its meaning.

Luckily, were here to explain what GT means in cars;when a particular car has that;designation.

What does GT mean in cars?

A Brief History Of The Nissan Gt

Nissans first car to be given the GT-R treatment was the first generation PGC10 Skyline GT-R that made its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1968. Production began early in February of the following year and two years later a coupe style car was introduced with the chassis code KPGC10.

Nissan equipped the first generation Skyline GT-R with a 2.0 L DOHC S20 Inline-six engine rated at 160 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 176 Nm of torque at 5,600 rpm. This made it one of the fastest Japanese cars around and showed the world what Nissan was capable of when it came to performance cars.

The next generation Skyline GT-R would appear at the 1972 Tokyo Motor show with sales beginning the next year. Unfortunately, Nissan would only produce a total of 197 cars and would end production the same year as it began. This was largely down to the oil crisis of the early 1970s that destroyed demand for high-performance sports cars.

Following this failure, the GT-R name was shelved for well over a decade until Nissan introduced the R32 GT-R in 1989. This car was an entirely different best to the first GT-R branded cars. It featured a powerful 2.6-litre twin-turbocharged I6 engine with as much as 276 hp at 6,800 rpm and 353 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm.

In 1999 Nissan decided to introduce a fifth generation GT-R that was once again quite similar to the previous gen model. It used the same RB engine once again but with even more improvements and performance.

Porsche Taycan Turbo S

Truth is, the brilliant, all-electric;Porsche Taycan makes a much better fairly short-range sports car or pseudo sports saloon than it would a long-range super-GT – but since that has much more to do with the developling state of our public electric car charging infrastructure than;the car itself, it’s definitely worth a mention in this list.

The Taycan will explode any assumptions you might have about the potential of the EV as a driver’s car. It’s every inch a Porsche first and an electric car second, and both performs;and handles like it. It’s;heavy, but certainly doesn’t feel like it on the road. Roll-on acceleration;is staggeringly responsive and monumentally strong from low speeds;;visibility is first rate;;the car’s dimensions are pleasingly compact for a four-door car; and handling is so supremely agile, poised;and engaging that a Tesla Model S hardly bears comparison .

On a long trip, the Taycan’s impressive rapid-charging capability would usually allow;you to return it to full charge in less than half an hour on the quickest 350kW public chargers. Even so, it’s also undeniably true that a continent-crossing mission in a car with a;usable high-speed touring range of about 200 miles at best, among;a still-limited number of public chargers that may be fast, slow, out of service or at worst non-existent when;you happen to need one, would be a bold gambit. It would be exciting too, though -;and by no means;only;for the sense of adventurous jeopardy.

Early Examples Of Gt Cars

GT cars are the love child of hard-core track or race cars and luxury coupes. Early GT cars possessed characteristics similar to both types of vehicles and date back to the 1930s. The 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GT was the first to be named Gran Turismo. Thanks to a dual sport/race chassis, the 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GT offered driver-friendly handling and performance at high speeds.

In 1935, the Fiat 508 Balilla S Berlinetta appeared. The Berlinetta was an aerodynamic version of the Fiat 508 Balilla touring chassis. It was a small gran turismo, with a small-displacement engine, bespoke coachwork and a streamlined silhouette. Later examples, all Italian, included:

  • 1947 Cisitalia 202 SC
  • 1951 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT

Gt Cars: A Bit Of History

What Does âGTâ? Mean on a Car?

Now that the question: “What does GT means in cars” has been fully answered, let’s take a look at a bit of GT cars’ history.

Originating in Europe in the 1950s, the title of the first GT car ever made goes to the Lancia Aurelia B20 GT. During this time, endurance sports-racing has become prevalent in motorsport, and as with today, most trends in racing will eventually become popular in the consumer market.

After World War II, the Yanks slowly warmed up to the idea of GT cars. They even became the largest market for European GT car imports like the Jaguar XK 120, and the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. Partly, this was due to numerous celebrities influencing the market at that time.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL

Skip to the present day and we have the numerous GT racing series. The most recognizable of course is the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge and the GT4 European Series. Just like the early days of the GT cars, these modern GT racing series have influenced the consumer market greatly.

Through the trickle-down effect from racing to production vehicles, GT racing has brought to us cars like the BMW M850i XDrive, the Lexus LC500, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, the modern version of the Mercedes-Benz SL, the Porsche 911 GT series of cars, and many others.

Modern Examples Of Gt Cars

Modern examples of GT cars fall into two main categories: Road cars and race cars. Understandably, some of the automakers on the list manufacture both road and race cars, often blurring the boundaries between them. Maserati Gran Turismo S, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, BMW M635 CSI and the Lamborghini Espada are all textbook examples of modern GT road cars.

Lamborghini, Ferrari and BMW manufacture GT race cars as well, frequently entering them in the races like the Pirelli World Challenge, an annual GT3 racing championship in North America.

What GT road cars are you likely to actually see on the streets in your neighborhood? Here are some examples:

  • Jaguar XJS
  • Maserati GranTurismo
  • Dodge Challenger

The above list demonstrates that although GT implies luxury, not all GT cars are luxury vehicles and there is often a wide variety in how automakers perceive GT model.

Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo

The first-generation car had questionable looks, but the Porsche Panamera is undoubtedly one of the most capable performance saloons on the market. Unlike its rivals from Mercedes-AMG and Audi, it doesnt feel the need to shout about it, either, making it an excellent grand tourer.

Despite its size, the Panamera has an incredible ability to control its mass through advancements in its air suspension technology; in some circumstances, it leads you to believe that youre in a car of the class below, and hauling 500kg less. Thanks to Porsches build quality and refinement, youll struggle to find a car in its class that offers the ability to cover miles at speed in more comfort.

The Sport Turismo variant takes things one step further, applying the same formula to an estate with little to no performance penalty more boot space and rear headroom make it ideal for long journeys. The £120,065 Turbo is the sweet spot of the range, offering a 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 for a 535bhp, 568lb ft torque output. Zero to 62mph comes in a brisk 3.6sec , with top speed at 188mph.

Fiat 8v Otto Vu Zagato

A surprise to the international press, who were not expecting a gran turismo berlinetta from Italy’s largest manufacturer of everyday standard touring models, the Fiat 8V “Otto Vu” was unveiled at the Geneva Salon in March 1952 to international acclaim. Although not raced by the factory, the Otto Vu was raced by a number of private owners. Vincenzo Auricchio and Piero Bozzinio raced to fifth in the Gran Turismo category of the 1952 Mille Miglia, and Ovidio Capelli placed third in the GT 2000 cc class at the Coppa della Toscana in June, with a special race-spec lightweight Zagato coupe; the GT category overall at this event was won by Franco Cornacchia’s Ferrari 212 Export . Capelli and the 8V Zagato topped this accomplishment by winning the GT category of the Pescara 12 Hours in August, ahead of two Lancias. The new Fiat 8V garnered sufficient competition points over the season to become the national two-liter GT Champion .

Elio Zagato, the coachbuilder’s son, was successful in competition with the Otto Vu in 1954 and 1955, attracting further customer interest and leading Zagato to eventually develop two different GT racing versions. Upon his passing in 2009, Elio Zagato was described as a leading figure of Italian GT racing and design:

The 8V Otto Vu earned its name courtesy of its high-performance V8 engine .

Alfa Romeo 6c 1750 Gt

The first car to be named Gran Turismo was the 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Turismo, a sporting dual-purpose road/race chassis and engine specification that was available with a wide variety of body styles or carrozzeria“. The influential Weymann fabric-bodiedBerlinetta version by Carrozzeria Touring, “an early example of what we generally perceive to be a GT car”, was winner of the Vetture Chiuse category at the 1931 Mille Miglia. Evolution Of The Gran Turismo Car

Grand touring car design evolved from vintage and pre-World War II fast touring cars and streamlinedclosedsports cars.

Italy developed the first gran turismo cars. The small, light-weight and aerodynamiccoupé, named the Berlinetta, originated in the 1930s. A contemporary French concept, known as Grande Routière, emphasized style, elegance, luxury, and gentlemanly transcontinental touring; the Grande Routières were often larger cars than the smaller Italian Gran Turismos. Italian designers saw that compared to a traditional open two-seat sports car, the increase in weight and frontal area of an enclosed cabin for the driver and mechanic could be offset by the benefits of streamlining to reduce drag. Independent carrozzeria provided light and flexible fabric coachwork for powerful short-wheelbase fast-touring chassis by manufacturers such as Alfa Romeo. Later, Carrozzeria Touring of Milan would pioneer sophisticated Superleggera aluminium bodywork, allowing for even more aerodynamic forms. The additional comfort of an enclosed cabin was beneficial for the Mille Miglia road-race held in Italy’s often wintry north.

Gt Cars That Arent Grand Tourers

One thing to note is that manufacturers often use the term GT/Grand Tourer to simply denote better performing and/or more luxurious variants of existing cars.

A good example of this is Subaru with their ever-popular Legacy .

The Legacy GT is definitely not a Grand Tourer in the same vein as what we described above.

However, it was the high-performance, more luxurious variant of the ever-dependable and oh-so-practical regular Legacy .

In some respects, you could argue that a Legacy GT does fulfil many of the same criteria as a conventional GT car; it is practical, comfortable and capable of excellent handling and straight line speed.

Other manufacturers use the GT badge or variations to achieve the same effect. On some cars, the GT term may simply refer to visual upgrades and not performance upgrades .

What Is A Gt Car

Because of its string-words-together-to-make-new-words nature, the German language is full of vocabulary for emotions and feelings were only able to vaguely describe in English. One of the best examples of this is fernweh. Fernweh could best be translated by using another German-rooted word as wanderlust. Its literal translation is far-sickness, making it the opposite of our familiar term homesickness.

While we may not have a word that encompasses so well the emotion and deep longing for sights beyond in our own language, its a feeling with which most of us are familiar. After all, our homeland is the perfect place to have such a feeling. At any time, you can get in your motor vehicle and travel across different geographic regions, moving through various biomes and encountering foreign culture. All you really need is a drivers license and some gas money.

Since Fernweh has been such a dominant emotion throughout the industrialized period of human history, weve built our modes of transportation around the ability to travel far and do so quickly. The Grand Touring car is one of the earliest automotive types and continues to this day in many forms. Youve undoubtedly heard the term before, or at least its abbreviated form GT but what does it mean?

Great question!

Aston Martin Db11 Amr

That Aston Martin has laid claim to the top two spots on this list is a testament to the;success of;Messrs Palmer ;and Co in turning the fabled British car maker from a slightly;old-fashioned;brand into a genuine force in exotic car making, at least from the perspective from the driver’s seat.;

Think of the AMR as a DB11 2.0. Nearly three years after the original DB11 V12 was launched in 2016, it has been retired and replaced by the model you see here. Power from the twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12 is up 30bhp over the old model to 630bhp, while stiffer suspension bushes and retuned dampers mean it now handles even more sweetly;than before. Outright traction has also been improved. Although the car’s;ride is understandably firm, theres enough composure on offer to ensure it remains a comfortable, effortless GT.

Its one thats not quite as complete as the DBS Superleggera, but considering that flagship model is the best part of £50,000 more, youd hope it wouldnt tread on its bigger brothers toes too much.

International Championship For Gt Manufacturers

Ford Mustang: What Do All of These Dash Lights Mean?

In 1962 the FIA, addressing concerns to reduce the speeds attained in sports car racing following the disastrous accident at Le Mans in 1955, shifted focus from Appendix C Sports Cars to production based GT cars of Appendix J. The previous World Sportscar Championship title was discontinued, being replaced by the International Championship for GT Manufacturers, won by the Ferrari 250 GTO in 1962, 1963 and 1964.

Cobra Ferrari Wars

In testing, the Shelby Daytona Coupe attained a top speed of 196;mph, and went on to win the GT class at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans. Shelby had beaten Ferrari on the biggest stage; however, the fast and reliable Ferrari 250 GTOs were again victorious in the 1964 International Championship for GT Manufacturers. The Championship was controversial: Enzo Ferrari, with only a narrow points lead over Shelby, attempted to have the radical new mid-enginedFerrari LM250homologated for the final championship round at Monza in Italy. When the FIA turned Ferrari down, Ferrari withdrew. The race organizers Auto Club d’Italia, fearing a financial disaster from the withdrawal of the famous Italian team, canceled the event, and Ferrari was crowned World Champion. In the aftermath, Ferrari declared he would never race GTs again, and for 1965 the rivalry with Ferrari was taken up by Ford Motor Company and the Ford GT40, also mid-engined, in the sports car divisions.
